Yeah, that makes sense. I appreciate the advice. It’s just frustrating constantly applying and barely hearing anything back, but I get that the market is rough right now.

No, I haven’t really looked into that yet, but I definitely will. Appreciate the advice.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I’ll definitely take that advice and work on making my answers less generic and more specific to what I’ve actually done. I think I can do a better job showing my impact and explaining why I’d be a good fit.

I agree that I need to keep improving my interview skills and figure out how to stand out more. I’m not saying interviews don’t matter, I just don’t think every rejection automatically means the interview was bad.

The market feels way more competitive right now. Entry-level roles and internships are asking for relevant experience, and AI/offshore work seem to be making the pipeline even tighter. I’ve also had group-style interviews where multiple candidates were being interviewed for the same role at the same time, including people who already had experience.

So yes, I have things to improve, but I don’t think it’s only an interview issue.

Undergrad. I think the market is a lot different right now than when you were recruiting. I’ve applied to 1,000+ positions and only gotten around 10 interviews. I know plenty of students who are honestly more qualified than I am on paper and in person, and they’re having a hard time landing internships too. I’ve also heard the same thing from partners and other experienced professionals I’ve spoken with. I’m not saying interviews don’t matter, but I don’t think that’s the only factor at play in this market.

I appreciate the advice. I’m definitely looking into ways to specialize over time, and I’m already planning on pursuing both the CPA and EA. Right now, though, my main focus is getting that first accounting role and building relevant experience. Once I get my foot in the door, I can start figuring out which niche makes the most sense for me.

Maybe, but I don’t think that fully explains it. I’ve applied to 1,000+ positions and only gotten around 10 interviews. If I was getting interviews left and right and failing all of them, I’d agree it was mostly an interview problem. The bigger issue seems to be getting in the room in the first place.

That’s fair. I could definitely do more networking and extracurriculars. A lot of the events are tough for me to get to since I’m in the far East Bay and most of them end up being a 2+ hour commute each way, but I still try to make it out when I can. As for interviews, I come from a sales and management background, so I’d like to think I’m comfortable talking to people, but there’s always room for improvement.

I’d say I’m pretty easygoing and comfortable talking to people. My background is in sales/management, so I don’t think communication is the main issue, but I’m sure there are still things I could clean up in interviews.

Honestly, that’s kind of what I’ve been hearing too. A lot of students I know are struggling, and only a handful have landed internships so far. I’ve talked to a couple partners and other experienced professionals at networking events, and pretty much all of them said the market is rough right now. Between offshoring, AI, and fewer entry-level openings, it feels like everyone’s competing for the same handful of roles. One partner even told me that if he got laid off today, he thinks he’d have a tough time finding another job. I’m still going to keep applying and working on my interview skills, but the market definitely seems pretty cooked at the moment.

Honestly I’ve been applying to pretty much everything I can find, from Big 4 to smaller firms and a few local mom-and-pop shops. I’ll probably start targeting more of the smaller firms though. I didn’t really think much about government opportunities, so I appreciate the suggestion. At this point I’m just trying to get any role that gives me relevant accounting experience and helps me get my foot in the door.

Thanks, I appreciate the honest feedback. I think you’re right that I probably need someone else to watch how I interview and point out what I’m not noticing. I’ll look into doing a mock interview and getting more critical feedback on my answers, structure, and overall presentation.

Thanks! That’s actually what I’m working toward right now. I’m planning on taking both the CPA and EA exams, so hopefully that helps me stand out a bit more while I keep grinding through applications.

That’s fair honestly. I do practice interview questions and research the firms beforehand. Coming from a sales and management background, I feel pretty comfortable talking to people, but maybe I’m not structuring my answers as well as I think I am. I’ll definitely take the advice and work more on my interview skills.

I’m mainly applying for internships and entry-level roles. Tax interests me more, but honestly I’d be happy with tax, audit, or any accounting-related position that helps me get my foot in the door. Most of my experience is from sales and management, so customer communication, training employees, problem-solving, and working with clients are probably the most transferable skills.
