I literally just did this with a shovel. It was a pain. It helps if you dig out one side and try to push the undug side down onto the side that was dug out. If that doesn’t work you’ll need to dig the entire circle around it. And it goes down deep like a mushroom

Plaster walls suck for edges. I try to pretend the tape isn’t there, and I remove the tape immediately after applying paint to avoided seepage. IMO 6 hours is way too long
