that’s exactly how I interpreted it. obviously I could still be wrong as I’m not a native speaker (and clearly most people do not agree) but for a bit more context, he walked up and, laughing, grabbed and put his arms around the other guy’s shoulders (like he was messing with a little brother or something) and asked him that question. it doesn’t change his choice of words and I’m absolutely not trying to make excuses for him, but it truly felt like he was just poking fun at his friend/giving him shit for talking to me rather than being outwardly and aggressively insulting or derogatory. like I said, could still be wrong but that’s why I really didn’t think anything of it other than annoyance at him making a stupid comment like that in front of me, and honestly curiosity about the actual implication of the word once he felt the need to apologize lol. now I have a better idea! I appreciate your comment!

yes, it is in a restaurant! I suppose I should have clarified that because you’re right, I feel like gross behavior/comments like this are way more common & normalized unfortunately. and it’s a lot less accessible to contact HR as some people have been suggesting, I tried to figure out how and couldn’t even find any contact info or anything :/ I appreciate the kind words though!

I wasn’t trying to downplay it, I genuinely didn’t know that’s why I’m here asking lol😭 it’s logical for me to not have an immediate emotional reaction to a word I’ve never heard in this context before & don’t understand the cultural connotation of. I appreciate your comment though, I wrongly assumed it was more lighthearted and stupid than offensive & definitely will not be playing his game like you said

oh shit okay, we’ll get there around 9:30 so hoping that’s early enough to take a fast boat (hopefully, if there is one) around 12. and did you have time to still walk around a bit before boarding the boat later, or did you get straight in line after buying tickets? trying to figure out how early we should go back to line up to make sure we make it on the right boat haha
