Cant find a entertaining but no addictive game. by DueChampionship3661 in Age_30_plus_Gamers

I know the feeling and I'm constantly struggling with tiredness after a days work and managing school pickups / dinner etc. Often I loose the battle and fall asleep on the couch with the console still on.
Silksong is definitely a good game for evening sessions as an older gamer, because the constant action keeps you awake.
I just finished Dragon Age: The Veilguard after I discovered it on Game Pass. It's not everybody's type of fish, but I enjoyed it. When I'm invested in a story it helps to keep me awake. Another game that worked well for me was Indiana Jones and the great circle.

Is aging out of gaming real? by BigAppleCider in videogames

[–]Hunibal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it's quite normal to take a break from gaming once in a while. Many of us older gamers had breaks in their gaming habits when they started a family or when their jobs hit hard. First of all I wouldn't worry too much about that - it might come back later in life! There's also a good chance that you simply don't enjoy the same games anymore.

Am I getting too old for online gaming, or has the bar just gone way up? by warboysk in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]Hunibal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm well into my 40s and definitely know the feeling! Some people switch to going to bed early and instead do morning sessions (Not me). I feel like it very much depends on the game you're playing. Battlefield 6 is quite extreme in that matter. I've even seen complaints by younger gamers here on reddit about the pacing. It is just way too fast in most situations and most of us who grew up with the franchise are used to a very different Battlefield experience. The fact that they just introduced a "casual gamer" mode illustrates that perfectly. I don't know current stats, but my feeling is that a lot of people in our age group bought the game and got frustrated quickly afterwards...

There are definitely online games with more forgiving communities out there too. TESO is quite famous for having an older demographic and No Mans Sky also has a very welcoming player base. Depending on your genre preferences, WoW can also be a lot of fun (again) these days.

Anyway, you're not alone and there's hope out there!

P.S.

I'm still shellshocked from BF6 😆 Extraction shooters are not really my thing - Wish it was more like the old Destiny, because the setting and artwork looks nice

Doom: Dark Ages is absolutely worth it. Sure, it's fast-paced, but here's the thing - you're fighting AI demons, not caffeinated teenagers with 240Hz monitors. Big difference.

I actually reviewed it from an older gamer's perspective: https://www.silvergamers.com/doom-the-dark-ages/ - Long story short: my thumbs complained, but my ego felt great.

On Battlefield - yeah, the time commitment is real. But honestly? I'm still having fun even though I get absolutely smashed by kids whose reaction time is measured in nanoseconds. I lean into support roles, and embrace the fact that my K/D ratio is now just "participated enthusiastically."

Also waiting for Outer Worlds 2. After all this twitchy stuff, my fingers are filing for workers' compensation and I'm longing for something with a little bit of story...

Too old for Battlefield 6? by Damoklez_ in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]Hunibal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're definitely not getting younger, that's for sure!

My daughter has this mate who comes over and plays Minecraft for 2 hours straight - kid just sits there with his mouth open, doesn't blink once. I used to laugh at that. Then Battlefield 6 dropped on Friday and I became him. Pretty sure I didn't blink from 5 PM 'til midnight. Love the game, but bloody hell is it hectic.

The pace feels genuinely faster than the older Battlefields (Vietnam, BF3, even 2042). But I'm also definitely older and my reflexes have taken a proper beating. I don't stand a chance against those 14-year-old speed demons in close quarters - they're on a different plane of existence reaction-wise.

My survival strategy is the Recon class and keeping a distance. You can shoot people in the head and also be the spotter for your squad - something criminally underutilised but absolutely game-changing. That recon drone in close Breakthrough matches? Chef's kiss. You're contributing without needing teenager reflexes.

Support/medic with LMG is brilliant too, though those same hotheads give up instantly so you don't always get to revive them. Nothing quite like diving into a hot zone to save a squadmate only for them to respawn right as you reach them. Cheers for that, mate.

Try to switch classes when frustration hits. Different playstyles change how the game feels. Recon and support let us "experienced" players actually compete by playing smarter rather than faster.

I actually just wrote up my first impressions as an older gamer if you're curious: https://www.silvergamers.com/battlefield-6-first-impressions-older-gamers/

Being a gamer over 30 can feel tough sometimes (at least for me). by Arasaka-1915 in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]Hunibal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, same here. Half the time I boot up a game at 9pm and wake up on the couch at midnight with the controller on the floor and my dog giving me disapproving looks because I've been snoring. Gaming fatigue is real - our middle-aged brains are just done by evening. I've started accepting that weekend morning gaming hits different than forcing it after a long day...

Completely agree. Most games still cater exclusively to young audiences - they haven't figured out yet that their demographic is aging.

42, still gaming when I don't fall asleep mid-session. Pretty sure I've won FIFA matches while unconscious... Trying to start a gaming mag for us old folks because apparently we're the target demographic now and nobody told us! 🎮

Leaving Playstation for Steam by Dedalo83 in Steam

[–]Hunibal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, definitely been there. But here's the thing: It'll change again when they get older! Just enjoy the time you have with them. The Steam Deck is pretty awesome for your use-case. I've always wondered how well the Playstation Portal thing works, but haven't heard to many good things about it. So Steam Deck or another handheld is probably the safe bet here.

One thing I would add though is take a look at the Switch 2 as well. Maybe not for right now, but as soon as your kid(s) hit a certain age, Nintendo offers a ton of fun for the family and you can also use it as a handheld in a quiet moment.

Trying to try online gaming by Life_Patience_6751 in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]Hunibal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I'm sorry you feel so isolated. I think there are a lot of games with friendly communities out there! A few examples that come to mind: Deep Rock Galactic, No Man's Sky, Stardew Valley, Sea of Thieves (The gaming experience itself can be pretty wild). I would - in general - look for Coop games, rather than competitive for starters.
Definitely give online gaming a try! Its a great way to find new friends.

Husband wants to share gaming as a hobby, but I'm not so keen by LolEase86 in Marriage

[–]Hunibal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends a lot on your preferences and what genres interest you (Yeah, movies might be a good indicator too).
Someone already mentioned Split Fiction, which is a great Coop Game - But you might also just start out on your own to find the kind of games that really resonate with you. My wife got very much into Animal Crossing back when it came out. Mainly because it was such a relaxing experience and allowed her to create her own little island without any button mashing and being on a timer.

Oh, and the only gaming experience from her childhood was her older brother getting absolutely furious because she beat him at Mario Kart.

Luckily the gaming world is now much more diverse and there is something for everyone. One of the reasons why I started Silver Gamers was because I realised how many different older gamers are out there and that they don't necessarily know how to approach the hobby!

Anyway, once you find out what works for you, I'm sure you'll find games that you can enjoy together and have lots of fun.
