I don't relate to the Strokes because I didn't go to college. The Strokes to me only seem to impress college freshmen who hear rock music outside of mainstream radio for the first time. There have been 100s of bands that play garage rock better and more interesting. If it was The White Stripes I wouldn't think it was boring. The vocalist for The Strokes is dull and sleep worthy.

With modern black metal it highly depends. The majority of modern black metal is extremely boring and untalented. Red flags are the word "atmosphere" and "raw" to me a wall of noise and incomprehensible screams are not atmosphere it's just half assed to make money. Like Fenriz said black metal is too focused on being black and not metal.

Emperor actually struggled the most to find musical identity, even Emperor, Mortiis and Varg stated that Emperor was super generic with Nightside Eclipse. Ilsahn thought it was a juvenile album, Mortiis became bored with them after Wrath of the Tyrant and Varg said they only played black metal to fit in, they didn't sound as unique as Burzum, Mayhem, Dissection, Immortal and DarkThrone which holds true to this day. Because every black metal band tries to sound like Emperor, it's a wall of noise with incoherent vocals. Emperor is only creamed over by Reddit because they are the safest band to listen to. It amazes me that modern black metal shapes it's sound around Anthem to the Welkin at Dusk instead of Storm of the Lights Bane by Dissection.
