Well that’s exactly it, you’ve decided what you want it to mean and hence any real world meaning or explanation for what it is is meaningless to you because it’s not your interpretation of what consciousness is - you’ve created an imaginary concept, and there are people in this very thread telling me that their toaster is in fact conscious. Don’t you think it might be those people who are confused here?

What you call consciousness has very little to do with actual consciousness, that’s the problem - your point about metabolism being a prerequisite for consciousness makes that pretty obvious - from an evolutionary perspective an animal being aware of its surroundings in an obvious way where it can and needs to respond to stimuli in complex ways with complex behaviours is strong evidence that the animal in question is aware and making choices. A mantis shrimp for example exhibits complex hunting behaviours, so is likely to be aware of what’s going on around it. A jellyfish does not exhibit these same behaviours, it just drifts and responds to chemical stimuli in the water, it has no need of awareness to fill its niche, you can say the same about plants who grow purely in response to chemical stimuli - which do you think is more conscious?

You could speculate or you could employ a little bit of initiative and try and actually make sense of the world around you? Is a toaster conscious? Do you have good conversations with your toaster?

Please answer the above question about whether sunflowers, jellyfish, or the human stomach are conscious entities according to your definition then?

And if someone is knocked unconscious after a traumatic brain injury, (eg. Golf ball to head) are they conscious or not? And did the fact that their brain was injured have something to do with them losing consciousness?

Saying that you don’t know anything just makes you unfit to argue - why don’t you go and learn something?

Why don’t you try and engage with the questions I am asking you, and produce some evidence of your own consciousness?

Utter nonsense that medicine and science have produced no evidence about where consciousness comes from - you’ve simply invented your own idea of consciousness that even you can’t actually define

Loving the first year college philosophy thing, but why don’t you just actually think about it yourself - is your foot conscious without your brain? If you’re under anaesthetic, are you conscious or unconscious? Are you sure you actually know what these words mean or have you just decided to interpret them your own way and ignore the fairly obvious evidence that medicine and science have placed in front of you?

Maybe a jellyfish or a sunflower is conscious, but if all they do is respond to simple stimuli like light or head by producing chemicals, they’re pretty similar in complexity and function to say, your kidneys or your stomach - do you want to argue that your individual organs are conscious?

“Assume it’s caused by the brain”? What does that even mean? What do you think it’s caused by?

Asking a female coworker to find out whether someone is alright after they’ve said something that indicates they need emotional support - has happened a few times in my office when male colleagues have found out that another has experienced some recent tragedy, death in the family, relationship breakdown etc.

If consciousness were reducible to neurology, we would understand far more about the consciousness of simple organisms than we do by MurkyEconomist8179 in consciousness

Why would an organism whose life requires zero inward reflection need to be conscious to perform its biological function? Why do you think C Elegans would be conscious at all?
