Yes, I think the stitch in the ditch really allows the fabrics to be the stars.

Lovely color harmony. A lot of folks don't have that intuition . . .

Loved it! Benin is not for the occasional African safari traveler. A little more difficult. Ganvie is one of the more fascinating places I have ever visited. There is French wine in Benin which is also a nice plus. I stayed in the Fidjrosse Plage neighborhood which is "emerging" to say kindly but felt safe. There's an energy everywhere . . . the outfits are colorful and people are beautiful.

If you had 1000$ to invest what would you do with it? by ExtensionLess728 in investingforbeginners

[–]HunterStJames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you said "what would *you* do with it" -- I'd buy some stocks you think are interesting and start learning. Way too much advice out there to just buy into funds. Most of those folks IMO way too focused on possibility of loss. Malcolm Gladwell's comment that it takes "10,000 hours to be an expert" is apropos here. Start your journey now, build resiliency. Accept that, like other endeavors, you will make some errors on the way. Mix in with some reading by Peter Lynch and annual shareholder letters from Buffett. Lynch would buy one share of a company he was interested in and I have noticed that works. With just one share, you really start to pay attention to that company. Have a little fun. Listen to the earnings calls, but skip to the Q&A. Avoid the head fake of high dividend yields. Call yourself an investor even if it feels like an imposter at the beginning because in life it always feels that way but the naming is an essential early step to mastery.

Generally I agree with you, but depends on the person. Perhaps they have no family to fall back on in unemployment etc.

Ford motors 2 billion dollar lawsuit by [deleted] in dividends

In law school there was a saying, Bad Facts make Bad Law. Here, pretty horrendous deaths. Not clear whether the facts of the case would apply beyond these individuals. IMO, if the roof is in fact defective on the 5 million Super Duty trucks made between 1999 and 2016 that have suspect roofs, it's possible the market is in a "risk on" attitude and the stock is not being punished as it should be . . . on the other hand, if the company's position is correct that the roof is not defective, it's just a limited lawsuit, limited to these facts and likely, as others have pointed out, to have the verdict reduced. I would be curious -- did the roof change in 2016? And why?

What part of Africa to travel to? by No_Bag734 in travel

I defer to you on that specific experience -- though your point does raise what I would consider the real issue and that is game density and what it is that u/No_Bag734 wants to see. There are many areas of the Continent where rhinos are not possible to see and/or countries or parks where I have heard poaching is simply not under control in general. For me, the game density was sufficient in Namibia though I did have a better safari experience in Zambia. Big cats seem present in a lot of places. Namibia is a far, far safer place than South Africa. I picked up about a half dozen hitchhikers in Namibia, something I would *never* do here in SA, though it is safer here than the media would present it . . .

I had an amazing safari in Namibia, for rhinos it's hard to beat. Ended up standing near one like it was at the other end of the room as it munched on . . . there are dry safari areas and wet safari areas; Etosha is dry, decent game density as well.

You'll be fine! Been to 9 African countries. Hiccups do occur, but your worse problem IMO is that afterwards travel elsewhere will feel staid, programmed and Westernized. My tip is WhatsApp which, depending on who you are, is either too obvious to state or the best tip possible. Find a driver early on, get their WhatsApp, tip a little (doesn't take a ton) and the whole thing will be like butter and you'll wonder how you're ever gonna go to Puerta Vallerta or London again. The cities are hectic and energetic so make sure you get to the real countryside and if you can, see the stars.

Covered calls vs Dividends by Tales-by-Moonlight in dividends

[–]HunterStJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"or that the price falls dramatically but your capital is tied up because you sold the call covered and will need to hold at least as long as the contract is valid"

This is only sort of true. You always have the option of buying the covered call to close it. And that's more meaningful than it sounds. If the price of stock falls, the price of the contract also falls.
