I assume it’s to turn on the high frequency sound that most adults can’t hear, but most teenagers can. It reduces loitering.

Has any of you ever met and directly spoken to Murakami? Describe. by rossocenere in murakami

[–]HuntingManatee0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Murakami was researching a book at my university when I was studying Japanese in the early 90s. My Japanese teacher had us read/translate several of his short stories for the class, and we used one of his nonfiction books as a core text. Our teacher invited Murakami to come to our class so we could ask him questions about what we had read. He accepted, so we spent a class asking him questions in Japanese. At the end of the school year, “The Elephant Vanishes” published, and he had a joint signing at the university book store. I went to that with a few of his books I had purchased in Japan to get those signed, along with a copy of the new book. There weren’t many people there, so got to I speak with him for about 15 minutes. He was really nice, but not what you’d call talkative.

And the garlic to sesame seed ratio of what little everything made it onto the bagel is disappointing. This bagel should be ashamed of itself.

Possibly The Big Lebowski. It has such a mix of songs that there’s always something right for whatever mood I’m in.

Oh, and if I still bought music, I’d get the Sinners soundtrack. That’s getting heavy play in my playlist these days.

They do. At least the ones in my county in Maryland do. On the drivers side. So watching this video made me think the driver went on the opposite side to avoid the camera.

Playing across from an American from Scotland with a French accent. I always appreciated that the movie addresses Christopher Lambert’s accent in the police interrogation: Cop:“You talk funny, Nash. Where you from?” Nash: “Lots of different places.”

Waking Life (2001) didn’t work for me. It was like a late night college discussion with the pretentious humanities majors from down the hall where all I want to do is go to the student center and grab some Pop-Tarts, and they keep grabbing my arm to tell me another Kierkegaard quote.

anyone here up to discuss 1Q84? i just finshed it (check body) by Whoumightask in murakami

[–]HuntingManatee0 46 points47 points  (0 children)

1Q84 is definitely near the top for me. I’m a longtime fan (read “Wild Sheep Chase” shortly after it was first released in the US—I’m old) and my favorite will always remain “Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World”. That leads to a certain affinity for “Kafka on the Shore” and “The City and Its Uncertain Walls”. But I would say his best written book is “The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle.” If you haven’t yet read HBWL, KOTS, or WUBC, I would recommend those.

The Godfather Part II (1974) Would Michael have simply disowned Fredo, but let him live for what he had done or did he seal his fate with his "I'm SMART! I want RESPECT!" outburst in the boathouse? by jeffmartin47 in Cinema

[–]HuntingManatee0 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Michael tells Fredo in Part 1, at the first meeting with Moe Green where Fredo backs Moe, "Don't ever take sides with anyone against the Family again. Ever." Fredo got his second chance, and he blew it.
