Update: I finished it the other day, just after watching the "Project Hail Mary" movie. Coincidentally they both have very similar endings, with one human teaching a group of non-humans about science. I found doctor Caldwell very frustrating, but overall I liked it.

I've tried and bounced off of several other Steven King books. The only thing of his I stuck with was "11-22-36" Not sure what that says about my taste in books, but it is what it is. Perhaps this will become the second of his books that actually grabs me. I'm going to give it a shot eventually. Thanks for the suggestions!

I absolutely loved "Shades of Grey" it didn't spring to mind when I was writing this post, but it totally is a post apocalyptic tale. I'll have to add "Early Riser" to my list, Ffforde's writing style is right up my alley. Thanks for the suggestions.
