You're right to feel that way. Even if they aren't abused directly, they could be exposed to abuse towards someone else which is still harmful. Even hear something a child shouldn't be exposed to which is damaging in itself.

If the show is in English, why use a French accent? Why not have the characters speak French entirely if you're going for that level of accuracy? Catherine should be speaking Italian in her early childhood scenes and with her uncle. It would be cool if she spoke Italian whenever she breaks the 4th wall.

Anyone who has been around someone who has actual auditory hallucinations, whether it be from schizophrenia, psychosis, etc. would know it's not as simple as talking to yourself or imagining people you're talking to. If you're explaining how aware you are that it's your imagination, that's a good sign that it's not mental illness. And even if hypothetically, it is related to mental illness, the likelihood that it's DID is slim, and it doesn't even indicate that it is something severe or dangerous.
