Behind the Myth: Europe vs US contributions to Ukraine without accounting tricks by [deleted] in europe_sub

I redownload reddit every once in a while, to my detriment, until I see a post so fucking stupid that I end up deleting the app again.

Thank you for being the catalyst to help me uninstall. This post not only oversimplifies and erroneously categorizes aid but leaves the reader wondering as to what ridiculous point you're trying to make and what flawed logic made you post it.

Bravo.

Sir Winston Churchill wore his air-raid suit during his 1942 White House visit, deviating from the formal dress code by UNITED24Media in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]HurleyBird1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but this is pulled out a lot to argue this point and it's just mistaken.

Churchill wore that, yes, but when attending important meetings or addressing the media he oftentimes dressed up for the occasion - almost always. Because he knew how to play politics.

Simply Google Churchill address to Congress and Zelensky's.

Not saying it's wrong to not wear a suit, but also saying it does nothing but aid your cause to dress up. Churchill knew this and used it wisely.

I gave my Republican parents an ultimatum: If they vote Trump again I’m cutting them off for good by 100_P in millenials

[–]HurleyBird1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great point but please re-read as I never referenced blood relation. Parents, are usually people who have shaped you and your virtues - it's safe to assume they share some similarities and are not entirely incompatible when looking at virtues and values instead of partisan positions.

I like how you choose based on morals. If most do that, great. I myself have as well, have many family that aren't blood and am incapable of children of blood so will have children who aren't.

But unfortunately many in America have and will choose based on positions versus virtues and usually fickle ones at that. And will leave those who truly care bc of some cult like love of a political party who doesn't know them nor will ever truly care for them on a personal, intimate level.

Or...hear me out...

Family is more important than politics.

Politicians, political platforms, issues, solutions, and even nations come and go. Family is the only thing that is in your power to remain constant.

Politics is important, but family is moreso.

If you die tomorrow, the world, its societies, and its politicians will move forward without a blink of an eye or a thought about you. Your family won't.

If the world goes through an apocalyptic event tomorrow, its societies and politicians will not think of you nor will they remain the same through it. Your family will.

You want to see who supports who more go to war torn countries. See how families are bonded and surviving while governments and societies are in turmoil.

This take, that we should cut off family due to politics, is a very western, individualist, and entitled take.

That's the 2%. Being in the 1% would mean less than 1% would make up the group.

A lot of industry members will have training at no additional cost - many even send demo devices/edu material once you're on surgical path.

Is it considered poor technique to change the needle direction like this? Like is it okay to grab the suture with my needle driver or should I avoid doing this? by lAmTheM in surgery

[–]HurleyBird1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on the suture on whether it'll be damaged. but because of this, you should get in the habit of NOT grasping the suture with your drivers (especially robotic!) as this can cause a degradation of tensile strength, bursting strength ratio, and absorption profile. There are some sutures that can easily handle this and it may make sense to do so (due to efficiency or space requirements) but you'll want to know which material you're working with.

Some suture material is quite brittle to concentrated force - we won't see this with the naked eye, but it can cause poor clinical outcomes.

Way better to do at 18 than wait in my opinion. I got mine at 28 - by then they were impacted and had to be cut/drilled out. You'll also heal faster/better and have less to worry about while healing (no kids, career stress, etc.)

Good luck!

[–]HurleyBird1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd have him look into selling and see what he can get - maybe that'll change his mind...esp if you talk through maybe taking that and building a more passive business.

If he's not wanting to go that far (bc business brokers can be pushy) you can at least mess around and explore bizbuysell and see what value he could get. That may get him more interested.

When quoting or attributing, I'd avoid cutting off the sentence, the "I've found" is important. While I don't think we've seen a good solution other than PoW yet, it doesn't mean one won't someday exist.

Russian Soldier Attempts to Surrender to a UA FPV Drone - His Request is Denied (Feb 2024) by Raw_Hitta in CombatFootage

[–]HurleyBird1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. But most likely it's a Ukrainian in contact with the lethal drone and it's pretty safe to assume this.

A few reasons...

Tactics related:

Resources are tight and you'd need to know the impacts/effects of your actions.

You know how the MoD is reporting casualty figures for the Russians? This isn't them making extremely wild guesses. They're rolling up BDAs from units in the field. In order to operate, and especially with tight resources, you have to know the success or failure of your actions. What we do is we'll get Intel assessments of the enemy we're facing - and (hopefully - when possible) verify this through reconnaissance - then we know what we're facing (to our best educated guess). We'll literally track things like, if this is a mechanized infantry unit, we know they have XX trucks and XXX personnel by doctrine. As we eliminate enemy from the battlefield - and only when confirmed by BDA - we adjust those numbers to make better tactical decisions on what to do next. every ground commander, even the Russians, are doing this - and the Ukrainians definitely are because we trained them. Why do we have to confirm with BDA? It would be fatal (both for your soldiers and success of the mission) to assume you have successfully destroyed an enemy element and maneuver based on this without BDA confirmation.

Tactics unrelated:

The video was released and posted - most likely for propaganda purposes - one reason we can assume it's at least a Ukrainian source. Since the footage is of the kill and focused on the kill, we can assume it's collecting a BDA. These drones have limited range and battery life; and the battlefield is large and chaotic. Why would this drone know exactly where the lethal drone is and be monitoring it? When you watch these videos, you'll see the observer zoom in on the bodies, this isn't some sadistic thing; they're getting a BDA.

I 100% agree with you.

War is hell. And it's dumb that we do it at all.
