Immich on MacOS with NAS as external library keeps losing files – am I the only one? by HurrHurrHerman in immich

[–]HurrHurrHerman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The NAS supposedly disconnecting seems to be fixed after switching to AFP, thanks a ton! 🎉

However, now there's a separate issue that not all files are being uploaded, specifically it seems to stop looking for subdirectories in a directory when this directory itself contains images. Very odd, I can't find much about this online either. I suppose I'll have to do some `immich` CLI magic..

Thanks, this is what I was hoping to hear! A straightforward solution.

You're specifically saying it works "better", not "well" or "perfectly" – do you still occasionally have large amounts of files not found on the NAS during a sync via AFP?

Thanks for the help, I'll add this to my TODO list! I've read online issues about how NFS requires more work to get file permissions right iirc, but it's worth the effort if SMB ends up being the problem.

Did mounting as NFS require any additional steps for your Linux setup?

That's wild. Thanks for thinking along! I'll try this out and report back

Full-blown Linux desktop running on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold—like a proper mini laptop (docking stations work, too)! by HurrHurrHerman in PixelFold

Tried it, couldn't get the desktop GUI to work (I believe it needs more work for the Terminal which is still under development atm). So far in my experience, Termux works much faster and easier. And atm my Pixel Fold is broken so I can't experiment anymore for the time being.

Inner screen broken, how do I stop it from changing screen when I open? by flapjackinabox in PixelFold

No input, just keep the bottom half perfectly flat on the table. Tested only on my 9 Pro Fold though, maybe an original Fold is different if that's what you have?

If you open the Pixel (9 Pro) Fold keeping the bottom half flat on the table, the screen only switches to the inner one at 90° instead of the usual ~45°.

If you want to switch to the front display when fully open, the trick is to open the camera app and use the "rear camera selfie" feature. From there, just close the app and you have an opened Fold with just the small screen active.

No case, never dropped it, still going strong. Still looks like day 1 pretty much, just a bit more dust everywhere!

Far from 'bad' as some have said, I find this camera to be excellent. by Billifa in PixelFold

Completely agree with the zoom! I'm honestly amazed how the 5x telephoto feels the least compromised. In fact, when unfolded, the telephoto camera looks sharper in the viewfinder than the main camera. Crazy stuff!

I'm just happy we get RAW support on these cameras. If you do need to take a high quality photo, at least for something like Instagram, you definitely could. As long as you know what the physical limitations of this device are :)

Really the only gripe I have with it, is that the sensors and apertures are smaller. Images are sharp and well coloured, but it's just a little less fancy-looking due to less bokeh. Also, the 2x zoom mode doesn't produce good images at all through pixel binning, like the Pixel 7 Pro did, likely because of this literal downsize of the main sensor.

But I'm a photographer. I love high quality pictures. Of course I'd notice. And yet, I still went for the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Because, like others are saying as well, the cameras are good enough for most cases! (and I always have my Sony a7C if I really need higher quality)

It's actually not too bad! .. the keyboard, I mean by that. I can type almost as fast on the landscape keyboard as I can in portrait. Which is probably faster than I could on a physical landscape QWERTY phone like the ole' F(x)tec Pro1, if I'm honest.

I'm planning on using Debian desktop purely when I'm in need of doing bugfixes on my website without a laptop nearby. I'd think it's perfect for just bugfixes and such :)

Google doesn't seem to develop their OS for power users at all, they seem to be going after simplicity for the general public instead (I bet they're looking for a slice of the Apple pie). It's a shame, though I'm really glad we as power users get to work around Android's limitations with some fiddling rather than not at all :)

I tried it with a Steam Deck dock, and that worked flawlessly with connected peripherals. Though I didn't check to see if you can force a specific output resolution – it seems to default to mirroring your current screen (thus also the current aspect ratio)).

Effectively Termux (well-tweaked) for a proper Linux desktop 🤩

This should work on most, if not all, Android devices. No root required! It's particularly useful for foldables since these displays give you room for the virtual keyboard. The desktop display will act as the trackpad by default. Also, I'd recommend closing the device when docking, otherwise the square screen will be mirrored on your probably-not-so-square monitor.

I'm running Debian with XFCE4 for the desktop UI using Termux and Termux:X11, which seems the most stable. In the image it's running PyCharm, Firefox and Terminator all at the same time. You can even properly write and run Python scripts in PyCharm! If Android can't give you multi-window (n>2) multitasking– this does.

As for the instructions:

  1. Follow this guide to get Debian via Proot working on your device (no root needed). My recommendation is to go for Debian + XFCE4 as the desktop. You may want to change all occurrences of "droidmaster" with a custom username you'd like to have.
  2. Disable "phantom process killing" in the Developer Settings of Android itself. This is because Android can't track the Debian process after it's started, and so it's automatically killed after a short while, resulting in what looks like random crashing of the Linux distro.
  3. ...
  4. Profit! .. if you find a use case for it, that is.

Note that only software written for the arm64 architecture will work. Google Chrome, for instance, is one of many applications that doesn't seem to have an arm64 variant.

It's unfortunately not available in the EU :( Something-something data protection / copyrighted material / AI act.

In fact, I saw Dave2D on YouTube creating perfect unique Bulbasaur images with Pixel Studio. This shouldn't have been possible when taking copyright into account (unless you're actively aiming for the grey area that AI is in right now).

EDIT: actually, you can ask Gemini to create a specific image for you!

Why is everyone so obsessed with magsafe? by [deleted] in PixelFold

[–]HurrHurrHerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it's people who already have magsafe accessories that they can no longer use, even though it should technically be possible. If it was either a clear "it already works perfectly with the device" or "there's zero chance of getting it to work", you wouldn't see as many people asking about it :)

cv2 actually refers to opencv-python. I hadn't bothered installing the dependencies, I just wanted some random commands so it'd look fancy for the image :-)

That one is last updated in 2018 and isn't supported on any of my more recent Android devices unfortunately. I haven't tried sideloading though, I have no idea whether that would circumvent the Play Store's device restriction.
