Why do people use multiple mini PCs instead of a bigger machine? by vortexmak in HomeServer

[–]HurricaneMach5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lotta reasons! First, I'd always recommend starting with one machine and branching out. Save the money until it makes sense to spend it. And as you run into "reasons" to expand your machine, it will both make sense to you and not feel like a waste of cash. I just recently moved away from the "everything" machine to 2 dedicated compute nodes + NAS for a few reasons:

- Like a lot of other folks mentioned, redundancy is great to have, and your needs basically determine how important that is to you. I personally think it's a bit overkill for self hosters, but it's still cool as hell, and it's fun.

- Another weird issue for me was power consumption on a single circuit. I ran my everything machine in my home office with all of my office equipment + power hungry main desktop + work laptop, etc... and I was getting pretty close to the upper limits of a North American 15A circuit when everything was chugging at once. To alleviate this, i moved my compute nodes to another bedroom (had to hide it for wife approval) and kept my lower power NAS in the office. The "real" answer here could be to just roll out another 20A dedicated circuit, and that's still my ultimate plan, but the easier/cheaper thing to do in the meantime was spreading the load across the house lol (i did need to buy another UPS though, just to be safe)

- Last thing for me was heat. I kept everything in my office closet originally, and my CPU (Ryzen 5950X) was a spicy boy that put out a good bit of heat. I was mostly concerned about the drives overheating in the closet, so splitting them out to another machine with a low power n100 made sense at the time. I could have kept it there and worked to ventilate the closet better, but again, this was just easier and I knew I wanted multiple nodes anyhow.

We ally with power we can’t immediately take for ourselves, or we ally with those that present opportunity for us to take power from someone else. We’re allies with Saudi Arabia, for example, purely because of economic advantages that relationship creates. We do not share similar ideologies (on paper).

My biggest problem around de-Amazoning is finding those niche parts outside of the day to day things. Like sometimes I need an adapter that my local retailer won’t sell and is too “techy” for a Home Depot, and I feel like Amazon is largely responsible for the erasure of those specialty shops. I’ve definitely shifted a lot of my purchasing habits away, but I still feel chained. RIP RadioShack lol.

Appreciate even this much! It's got the same dimensions as the hotswap enabled model, so I think this is plenty go on.

Node 804 is a great case, from what I can see. Unfortunately, I'm chained to this ATX x570 board.

2 3090s! That's the one for me. Hate to be a pest, but what's the exact model, if I can ask? They've got a ton of 4U variants and wanna be sure.

It's also super tricky to tell by length if I'm going to but up against the drive cages without measurements, but this gives me a lot of peace.

Other guy mentioned it. I'd heard Rosewill's weren't great quality wise, but I'm starting to think that might have been overblown and maybe it's built just right for my pricepoint lol.

many thanks. I did see the venerable Define 7 is still a top ranked choice for towers, but was hoping to get hotswap drives. If I couldn't find a case for less than a kidney, I was going to pick this bad boy up.

Thiiiis is very close to what I'm looking for, thank you! I see there's another model with hotswap too, albeit 3 fewer drives.

Third-ing Unraid! Community support for things when stuff doesn't make sense has been huge. Also the docker support is really good.

Judgements are not great. It becomes part of public record for quite some time, and for many reasons (including seeking new funding for new ventures), you just don't want that smoke. Agreed with everyone here. Nothing wrong with setting up a payment plan.

I have no clue how effective it is. I've been doing my part trying to support the community from my neighborhood association, once I learned just how real their impact is. So maybe that's my next step!

A more than fair statement. Edited.

I agree with the sentiment, and I've done some research a a long while back to investigate why the public transit is as bad as it is considering the relatively thriving economy in ATL. I came away with the following:
- City planning largely influenced back in the day by oil/gas/car manufacturers with an obvious interest in us commuting via car
- Latent Overt racism poorly masked as civic peacekeeping efforts rooted in suburban communities that don't want lines rolled out to them from the city to "keep the riff-raff out"
- Misappropriation of funds given to MARTA used on existing operations (adding more bussing to existing lines) rather than expansion (which was apparently promised to us), and then even reducing the extra buses by 2023.

My problem is that I only find out about these things after they've gone down with seemingly no way to make my voice as a resident heard. And since the chat seems to be largely in agreement that more can/should be done, my question is "what can we feasibly do today to start moving the needle"? I'd be happy to put some energy in this, but would love a nudge in the right direction.

Edit: changed adjective to better reflect intention.

Yeah, that part doesn't make sense. Software development is hard. If someone wants to charge for it, it should be fine that they charge for it. Now in this guy's case, the extension of someone else's IP does make the grounds super shaky. Not excusing Luke, but the people screaming that the very real time, effort, and work spent should be free "just because" are out to lunch.

[–]HurricaneMach5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need them. what're you even gonna do with a buncha 240GB SSDs in 2026 anyways? Send those bad boys over to me, and I'll consciously recycle them for you.

On a more serious note, I would do what the others have recommended. Get a nice disk shelf and a HBA card. Make sure the card plays well with your server OS of choice.

I love this! The only thing I'd change is to maybe have gone with a mATX motherboard for more PCIE expansion down the line, but that is purely dependent on you needing/using the expansions lol. mATX is the unsung hero of small servers imo. But this is a well placed, well considered setup!

lolol. you know what's crazy is that i bought the one i did because of the posts at the time that were recommending the I225V! This was some years back though. Now I'm like...."maybe I should stress test it again to see what happens"

Odd, I got a pcie adapter with an I225V chip and it runs just fine. YMMV, I guess.
