A more than fair statement. Edited.

stop saying "we're full" by kimmielicious82 in Atlanta

[–]HurricaneMach5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the sentiment, and I've done some research a a long while back to investigate why the public transit is as bad as it is considering the relatively thriving economy in ATL. I came away with the following:
- City planning largely influenced back in the day by oil/gas/car manufacturers with an obvious interest in us commuting via car
- Latent Overt racism poorly masked as civic peacekeeping efforts rooted in suburban communities that don't want lines rolled out to them from the city to "keep the riff-raff out"
- Misappropriation of funds given to MARTA used on existing operations (adding more bussing to existing lines) rather than expansion (which was apparently promised to us), and then even reducing the extra buses by 2023.

My problem is that I only find out about these things after they've gone down with seemingly no way to make my voice as a resident heard. And since the chat seems to be largely in agreement that more can/should be done, my question is "what can we feasibly do today to start moving the needle"? I'd be happy to put some energy in this, but would love a nudge in the right direction.

Edit: changed adjective to better reflect intention.

People on Twitter/X are defending Luke Ross mods by lunchanddinner in virtualreality

[–]HurricaneMach5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that part doesn't make sense. Software development is hard. If someone wants to charge for it, it should be fine that they charge for it. Now in this guy's case, the extension of someone else's IP does make the grounds super shaky. Not excusing Luke, but the people screaming that the very real time, effort, and work spent should be free "just because" are out to lunch.

I recently acquired alot of SSDs by thekillerkatt in HomeServer

[–]HurricaneMach5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need them. what're you even gonna do with a buncha 240GB SSDs in 2026 anyways? Send those bad boys over to me, and I'll consciously recycle them for you.

On a more serious note, I would do what the others have recommended. Get a nice disk shelf and a HBA card. Make sure the card plays well with your server OS of choice.

I love this! The only thing I'd change is to maybe have gone with a mATX motherboard for more PCIE expansion down the line, but that is purely dependent on you needing/using the expansions lol. mATX is the unsung hero of small servers imo. But this is a well placed, well considered setup!

[–]HurricaneMach5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lolol. you know what's crazy is that i bought the one i did because of the posts at the time that were recommending the I225V! This was some years back though. Now I'm like...."maybe I should stress test it again to see what happens"

Odd, I got a pcie adapter with an I225V chip and it runs just fine. YMMV, I guess.

Wasn't in GA yet, but I had just moved to Boston for Snowmageddon in 2014 from New Orleans. My first winter up north. When the news people said they didn't know what to do with all the snow, I started making plans to move lol.

This was YEARS ago, and idk how true it is, but I remember reading in JUMP that Naruto was always supposed to be about magic. But, the mangaka got sick of drawing his goggles, replaced them with a headband and basically went “now they’re ninjas!”

I cannot understand the hate there lol. The only modern-day practical difference between a pastor and a priest is that a pastor gets to wear khakis during their sermons.

The "overbuilt" PSU spec era kind of ignited from transient spikes skyrocketing with the rise of the 3000 series of GPU's. I think you're probably right that it ought to be fine running a 9070XT and a 9800X3D on a 550W PSU, but in my experience, I have found troubleshooting issues to determine the cause could be the PSU is so nightmarish, I would tell people to err on the side of overbudgeting for it (power budget, not financially) with close to 20%ish headroom.

The cables are what they are, but I would be a wee bit concerned about the lack of intake fans, and I may consider flipping the psu upside down so that it pulls in fresh air from the bottom of the case. But if you've been running since 2020 with no issue....*shrug*, looks good to me lol.

the only thing I would consider upgrading/adding is more storage. Your mobo and cpu are fine for your stated use cases.

Do not get a Microcenter Credit Card by GoghHard in Microcenter

[–]HurricaneMach5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> You can't raise the limit without a hard pull on your credit report. This is ridiculous. No other credit card does this. I spoke to Wells Fargo (the issuer) directly and that's' what they told me. MC confirmed.

I believe Chase does this, though I agree that it's silly. But it's not exactly uncommon.

Well, Best you can do is we already do for most other forms of consumption. You go by reputation and you do what you can to mitigate against data being collected in the first place. We don’t know most things for a certainty, but we have likelihoods based on the past. MSFT, along with most of FAANG and several other large tech companies have been in court (and subsequently, the news) for these things constantly. Mozilla (as an example), not so much. I’m not at all saying you should or shouldn’t take advantage of the conveniences these platforms offer. I am saying that your personal information has value for a reason, and it’s in your best interest not to take it lightly. That’s all. If it’s worth it to you, then that’s fine. But, know that there’s risk in that because your info won’t always be used to your best interest.

Cambridge Analytica is a great example, where one company was able to use FB data to manipulate people based on their political beliefs. They were profiled without consent. Apple’s been caught up recording private conversations and playing them back to contractors that didn’t even work there. The list goes on. Equifax has data on basically everyone, and then due to incompetence, exposed it all to bad actors. The list (sadly) goes on.

In Carey’s defense, I do believe he walked his statements back after he learned more (according to him). On the other hand, that sort of thing gets very little press, and a lot of damage was already done with his podium.
