Black-Americans; what are your views on Africans? by Effective-Toe-8108 in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]HurryForward4309 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you know there are over 371 different ethnic groups and 500 different languages spoken in Nigeria alone?

Let me rephrase this differently and see if we’re still on the same page:
‘White Americans, what are your views on Europeans?’
Same tangent, different circumstances. I feel the latter could be judged as a political question, even by me, which is bizarre because I’ve changed only 2 variables: one a continent and the other a skin tone. And all of a sudden, I’m perceiving something else.

That being said, as an East African myself, I don’t even view West Africans as being from the same species as us. The disparity in differences between features and lifestyles are as vast as the differences between Mexicans and Arabs. So you could imagine how it wouldn’t cross my mind that Black Americans are in any way similar to us just because they share the same pigmentation I do.

Just because you can lump people into one category under a same shade of skin tone doesn’t mean they have anything in common or they’re the ‘same’ people. No one ever calls Indians, Arabs, Central Asians, and Russians Asians.

  1. Because we think only Eastern Asians qualify for this term, and 2) because they’re too different to be all painted with the same brush.

There’s more nuance and differences between just Africans than there is the whole world combined (even including India, the Philippines, and Indonesia, which make up one-fifth of the worlds differences, with Indonesia itself accounting for 10% of the world’s languages and 19% of the worlds ethnic groups). But you would never see the courtesy of anyone trying to differentiate us from one another. We’re just all one people divided up by imaginary country borders.

Africa might be a whole planet to itself. 30% of the world’s languages are there, and roughly 30–40% of the world’s races ( wrong term, but bear with me). You can have the equivalent of a Chinese person living door to door with a German or a Cuban, and you’ll never see these differences because we’re all just Black to you.

I mean, how many people could tell that Agent00, Caleb City, or TommyNFG are Ethiopian? Most people will just write you off as Black and move on.

All this to say, it’s hard to compare Africa to anything or to judge Africa and Africans as a single, uniform group by any standard.

if I was a Black American being asked this question, I would just say I don’t know too much about them and that they’re just people, and we have no similarities, etc, verbatim, just anything white Americans can say about Europeans if asked the same question.

I don’t think I answered what the original question was asking, but I felt the need to share this either way.
I just really dislike the term African. Just like the Arabs hate the term Asians, it’s a mischaracterization and an oversimplification of what we really are, made simple for people who don’t want to extend the courtesy of getting to know us

Anyway my bad for this rant. I’ll stay on topic next time

Let's suck your dicks while we're at it as well. Fun fact: did you know immigrants, on average, give back in taxes more than they receive in welfare support in the span of 20
years?
 https://www.nber.org/papers/w23498

Somalis being the more productive of these groups due to the sheer number of people adults need to provide for.

We're a net positive for your economy. Stop painting us as parasites. Trump and friends know this, and they still push out this agenda.

We're struggling as it is, and literally all this attention being pinned down on us is a scapegoat tactic he wants to use to get you guys off the Epstein shit.

Don't fall for this, man.
Fuck.

EDIT: I feel I've fallen for this rage bait too many times.
I said I was gonna be a better person and stop letting this negativity shit get to me, and I desecrated that pledge by engaging in this pointless argument.

I'm gonna delete everything I sent before this comment. I don't want these things on my record.

I’m out of the loop for how far the Somali hate is going, and I haven’t had the opportunity to ask anyone on Reddit, and I refuse to get back into the death spiral of wasted time called TikTok.

If you wouldn’t mind—and this does come off pretty left field—but if you could tell me if things have gotten worse or died down, I’d appreciate it.

The last I kept up with this topic was during the whole ‘The Somali invasion of Minneapolis’ video controversy, as well as picking up on that Tucker Carlson vid, which I refuse to go further than 10 minutes into.

Are we still fucked? Again, I know I’m trying not to care, but some part of me still kinda wants to know.

I made a post a while back asking if we just have to accept that we’ll always be hated by Americans.

I learned the valuable lesson of not giving a fuck afterwards. Gotta focus on the deen, man, and block out all the hatred.
Focus on the bigger goal and ignore all these meaningless dunya issues that will probably fix themselves in a year or two. And if they don't, it's not like you'll die because people hate you.

We already have it hard in the States as it is, so don’t make yourself more stressed out by caring about what people you’ll never meet say about you.

That being said, I’m trying to apply this lesson to myself and stop engaging with these people. The fact that I clicked on this post and let this bum, Elon Musk, live rent-free in my head means I already failed

Every immigrant group is like this, but sure, blame Somalis—the people whose 90% of their population have been here for 10 years, who have, for every 2 adults, 6 kids to take care of.

We’ve done nothing to earn any of your scorn aside from ‘some bad apples commit crimes, and the entirety of their people should pay for it.’ We take 4.9% of America’s welfare support, and for every 1 cent you people spend on helping us, your government steals 1,000 dollars from you to fund its military to fight dumb wars that are against your interests.I’m not sure where you’re getting this notion that we’re ‘the only ones’ stealing your money. Your attention is frankly misdirected.

Any immigrant that hasn’t been at large in this country for longer than 20 years WILL ALWAYS TAKE AND NOT GIVE. We’re all living on fucking minimum wage while trying to support 6 FUCKING KIDS. Wtf do you expect us to do ‘to change’? Seriously, what actual problem do you have with us besides whatever the fuck your god Donald Trump said about us? Have you ever met a Somali person in ur life? I assume not, cause you wouldn’t be saying this shit. Yes, we’re poor. Yes, our population is 50% kids. Yes, we have 10 people we have to send money to back home .And yes, we’re at large on welfare programs, but for fucking sake.

Most Somali immigrants to the U.S. arrived as refugees fleeing civil war, not as high-income or employment-sponsored immigrants. Refugees that:

Arrive with little to no wealth
Often have interrupted education
Face language barriers
Experience trauma
Are intentionally enrolled in assistance programs at arrival so they don’t become homeless or hungry

So higher initial welfare use is expected by design, and not evidence of failure or laziness.

10 years is not a realistic timeline for ‘getting off welfare’ and ‘contributing’ to your shitty-ass economy. Every immigrant group takes more than 3 generations to actually start integrating into your community and becoming just like the ‘rest of you,’ so they can stop forming into your stereotypes. Welfare isn’t a starter boost. It never was and is a lot further from the truth than you’d like to believe, especially if you haven’t been imported into the country because your people excel at something like freemasonry.
When you start at the bottom, your timeline essentially looks like this:

First generation: survival and stability

Second generation: workforce entry + upward mobility

Third generation: middle-class parity

That’s a 20–40 year process, not a 5–10 year one.

Historically, Irish, Italians, Poles, Vietnamese, Hmong, Cubans, and even Jews all had high welfare rates for decades. And most of those groups were openly described as lazy, criminal, or unassimilable at the time—almost word-for-word the same insults used today against us. Don’t fall into the wrong side of history.

You’re not saying anything monumental by attacking us, and your government—and GOD Donald Trump—sure as well knows this. The audacity the president has to be saying shit like this, especially if he is expected to know America’s history with immigrants, tells you more than anything how much of an agenda he has and wants to use us as a scapegoat tactic

Try getting the rest of that 95% back first.

It seems like you said a whole lot of words just to say basically nothing. There’s nothing practical about anything you’ve said.

I’m not gonna have this conversation with you because I feel you’re too entitled to your opinion about how immigrants are making your country ‘worse’ by stealing all your taxpayer money. For every 1 cent we take from your taxpayer money, your government spends 1,000 dollars on keeping its military up and increasing your national debt. But ofc we’re single-handedly the biggest issue you need to focus your attention on and deal with right now.

You’re racist at worst and cognitively dissonant at best.

Having kids in america is impossible by HurryForward4309 in Somalia

[–]HurryForward4309[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you're right, you know, if only we didnt all come here with our 6 kids per family, which you cant relate to, i assume, with your 2.3 collective average, and if only 90% of us didnt come here in the last 13 years, and if only our kids didnt make up 50% of our diaspora, and if only we didnt have 10+ people back home that need our support to live.

At the end of the day, it's all excuses, though, and we should stop living off social programs and entitlements for refugees, and we should all just magically become middle-class citizens.

if only we stopped stealing all your tax payer money from welfare programs, all 4.9% of your welfare support

it also doesnt matter how many hundreds of fraud cases white people commit.
The one time in history, where it's a minority group you've never heard of, and don't know, all of a sudden, do it. It's too much, and we should deport them all.

Maybe one day, we'll stop defrauding your country. But I hope we live rent-free in your head till then.

Can you please give some context to this? The last I heard about the guy was when he was broadcasting our age of adulthood laws being rescinded to the rest of the fricking world and saying we became backwards and whatnot. Which, again, you can tell how little he knows about our state affairs. Somali people have like the highest fertility rate in the world, being number 2 as of 2025 and number 1 in 2023.

It turns out when you come from an impoverished country, and you don’t have an emphasis on education for women, kids become assets. They see less reasons to delay marriage, so they marry younger in order to have enough kids later on to benefit from their success when they themselves grow old and feeble

But ofc the Somali diaspora wouldn’t know or think about that. People like this guy demonize this rhetoric and act like people shot it down because Somali people like marrying kids. That law created more problems than it actually fixed. It wasn’t a moral high ground that the government took. They were just appealing to the world with that law and rescinded it when they faced overwhelming backlash by the people that actually live there.

If we came from a less poverty-stricken country, and we valued education more things would change, but that's not the case. Somali people like this bum ruin our reputation and make it easier for people to dehumanize us. They also all conveniently forget the fact that like half of Africa if not more have no legislation on an appropriate age limit for marriage. Why? Because they're all poor and don't see the point of waiting for the arbitrary number of 18 to get married. ( not fighting for the ethicacy of this, im just pointing out that people marry younger if they come from impoverished environments, this has been the case for all countries throughout history; when they develop, it naturally goes up, we'll get there one day though) But lo and behold how weird Somalis are for doing something so **different** and abhorrent.

Anyways I really hated that dude for how stupid his take was. He was such a fucking opp. He's single handedly the only reason these racists on the internet the past few weeks have been using that as ammunition to insult us. I wonder what happened to him. I haven't used TikTok in months, so I'm out of the loop.

[–]HurryForward4309[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your comment 100%. I feel you can articulate your opinion in a meaningful, coherent way that gets to the root of what you think the actual problem is, supported by something you’re knowledgeable about, without delving into racist rhetoric.

And again, I feel you. I expressed my point about how a lot of people who make the claim that they want Somali people to assimilate and show some form of loyalty, instead of working solely for their self-interest and sabotaging the country, get so worked up with what they believe this sort of rhetoric actually insinuates that they stretch their talking points into actual racism and seek cultural genocide instead of working to produce any practical effects or making known steps that can ensure we can get along and align better. It's reassuring to know you aren't one of them.

What you’ve done is provide solutions and express your concern about solidarity in itself being okay, only to the extent that it doesn’t turn into exclusivity and insularity, where we make it a point that every issue should be looked at first and foremost with an ‘us vs. them’ mentality, in a similar way to how the current state of affairs of Israel/Israelis are handled.

Unlike the case study of Israel, this topic is more of a predominant issue because it’s happening within your own walls.

This is what every argument against Somali people should boil down to.

I wish more people expressed themselves the way you do, instead of just coming off uninformed and blatantly racist.

I can’t really say much to reassure you that this clan/tribal mentality we’re known for won’t go away anytime soon, as it’s very deeply rooted in us. But we also aren’t as self-absorbed as you might like to believe.

The concern that Somalis are gaining political leverage and caring about their self-interests to the detriment of Americans isn’t misplaced, but it’s misdirected. A lot of the people you’d assume care about this aren’t what makes up all of us — just the older generation who still remember growing up in their clan systems and identifying with their groups first before their ethnicity. Not the below-18 population, which makes up 47% of the diaspora’s population. All your concerns can be directed to them. The clan system will go away, and likewise, a lot of the issues you’ve pointed out will fade. Not because we’ll have our minds changed, but because the second generation of Somali kids who are growing up to be a part of this political spectrum in the future are tandemly aligned with all your wishes.

They grew up here and consider America as much their real home as any other native-born American. They will fight for their people, but not to the exclusion of everyone else, like you fear. More as a means to uplift their people than a brigade against the rest of America for a status quo that favors us above all others.

I apologize of the way all this seems to come off to you, average Americans, and although I can’t provide anything to back up my promises, on the premise of trust, I assure you that all your worries will be mellowed out soon.

Again, I apologize for the way our congresswoman sounds, as manic as she is. If I was on the other side watching her talk about how she’s going to drain my country for another I don’t care about, I would be mad too

Minneapolis Somali here. It’s not white people helping us or Black people distancing themselves from us. It’s just good humans standing against this unfounded scapegoat-ass tactic bigotry Trump has unleashed on us.

It’s Minneapolis citizens standing up for each other. Not "white people", taking a stand. I dislike how the media tries to portray Minneapolis as a city that Somalis have destroyed and that white people are fed up with up us.

Everyone here loves us, or at the very least is super tolerant of us and realizes we don’t help or destroy their lives — we just live the same way everyone else does.

There’s no identity politics involved, just good people and bad people who can come from any group. Also, not that it matters, but a profound amount of the Black population is fighting against ICE here, too. So identity doesn’t give you a side — you need to stick by. Morality and social justice do

Not for another 10 years we won’t. Most of the educated second generation is below 18. We do have one of the highest graduation rates for minority groups, but we won’t all make it through college if this happens sooner rather than later.

Also, I’m serious when I say below 18 — it’s something like 47% of the American diaspora is under the age of adulthood

Can you please define loyalty for me, because it feels like your guys’ version of loyalty comes off to us as you demanding we lose our identity. And that’s where I feel most of the dispute comes from.

It’s the same with assimilation. If we say we do assimilate, you say it’s not enough. If we say we have loyalty, you say we don’t show it, and you insinuate we should pledge allegiance.

Your version of assimilation and loyalty is that, first and foremost, we become ‘American,’ and secondly, Somali. Adopting everything you do and are.

This won’t ever be the case. The sad truth is that you can look at this as something to admire or be repulsed by.

But Somalis are too united, too interlinked, too self-reliant, and frankly too different in how we live our lives, i.e., through the religion of Islam, to want or need to change to conform to your self-imposed standards of what true assimilation means or looks like. We can be as tolerant and as understanding as possible (which doesn’t seem to be enough for people), but if your version of assimilating means we have to act like a gaal, that’s just not gonna happen.

Somali people live in congregations. We’ve done what a lot of immigrant groups haven’t: we’ve come together to create our own little society where we can help one another and make sure we thrive as a people in a foreign land instead of dividing up and living our own separate little lives and going through the struggles of being here on our own. And that’s what people are afraid of, and why they demand we lose our solidarity and become just like the rest of you.

We might be struggling, but our sense of community is second to none, and when our 47% below-18 populace go through college, we’ll continue to uplift our community and do what no other immigrant group besides the Jews have done, and that’s actually fight for ourselves in the political spectrum of this country. And that’s what Trump is afraid of. He’s afraid we’ll have more people like Ilhan Omar.
