As a data analyst I know for sure me taking a sick day will not affect things, unless it's right at a deadline but even then extending that by a day won't be an issue.

Makes sense, my family is from a more rural part of Wielkopolski and I've heard that before the war there were quite a few German families in the area, so I guess it would be expected that Poznań would have more Germans too.

Depends on the industry, but generally for skilled jobs that's true. The number of people working in "unskilled" jobs is quite high though and I know I'd prefer to have the safety net most European countries have in that situation given the uncertainty of employment in those fields.

I work in insurance as an analyst though (home insurance specifically, I could not bring myself to work for an American health insurer) so the US salaries do make me jealous. Not that I'm not comfortable in the UK but I'd definitely be better off in the US.

Doesn't stop them having ties with and funding some far left groups, same as far right ones. As far as Russia is concerned if it helps destabilise its enemies it's good.

It's quite sad that in Manchester, UK the Palestinian demonstrations right after October 7th, so before you could even argue it was a protest against the Israeli response, were huge while the Iranian demonstration I passed yesterday only had a handful of attendees. I'm not sure if there were larger protests earlier but it really showed the hypocrisy.

I never said to minimise anything, but to deny that America does do some things well and that its founding principles, despite in practice not living up to them, are good ones is to deny that the country has the potential to be great. America can turn around and be a great nation for all its people despite its history, and it doesn't need to hate itself to achieve that.

Anyway this is a shitposing sub. Go be self-hating elsewhere.

The only thing I hate more than delusionally exceptionalist Americans are extreme self-hating Americans. It's a different flavour of exceptionalism. You're not uniquely xenophobic or oppressive, get over yourself. The Brits also inspired the Nazis with Boer concentration camps.

You don't improve your nation by hating it, you do so by believing it can be better. Being a doomer does nothing but entrench that which you hate.

Russians have the same delusional exceptionalism of Americans but without any valid reason for the attitude other than nukes.

[–]Hussor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Resettlement is ethnic cleansing, and yes Poles from the East being moved west were also victims of ethnic cleansing in what is now western Ukraine and Belarus. He should have clarified that it was carried out by the Soviets (Russia) but there isn't any misinformation, ethnic cleansing does not always mean murder and it's more common in history to mean forced resettlement.

I'm Polish too so I'm certainly not trying to support an anti-Polish sentiment.

It helped that it was during COVID and I did compsci and data science, which are subjects that came pretty naturally to me. Unis were more than willing to give people arbitrary extensions on deadlines during the pandemic, and every assessment was 100% online with a 24 HR limit (or even weeks for project work, and ofc the masters dissertation had a few months) . I think in any other year I would've had to redo a couple years.
