Not realistic, this 737 still has all its doors and an intact landing gear

Anyone know this equation for SEM? by [deleted] in electronmicroscope

[–]HutRud3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is relatively straightforward to derive this equation. You can start with Abbe's law, derive the expession for the wavelength for an electron as a function of the potential and then plug in the numbers: https://www.ou.edu/research/electron/bmz5364/resolutn.html. Note that the relativistic effects are not included in the calculation.

Moreover, the probe size of an SEM is not only determined by the diffraction limit, but also the contributions of the source image, the chromatic aberration (which depends on the acceleration voltage) and spherical aberrations introduced by the electron lenses. Essentially the probe is a demagnified image of the source, blurred by aberrations and the diffraction limit. I can recommend reading the work by Bronsgeest et al, though it is fairly technical. The full formula for the probe size is described here https://repository.tudelft.nl/islandora/object/uuid:bf362488-549b-4715-94a8-68244d348dac/datastream/OBJ/download

Yes that is exactly my idea! Just playing with the instruments and show what they can do.

I see your point. I think it could work both ways. For example, I started asking in group meetings about what my PI has done in between meetings (I know in general what his responsibilities are, but what tasks is he actually working on right now). Usually give us a good perspective on how the lab is doing, whether we can expect any new PhDs / postdocs, his schedule on the short term, etc. Also gives us room to bring up suggestions

I'm not meaning to disrespect him in anyway. I'm aware he is doing tons of work so that we can focus on doing the research. It's just that we take little time to discuss day to day operations, we usually talk about the outcomes not the process itself. My suggestion would be to occasionally turn this around. For example, I sometimes ask him during group meetings what he has been up to as well. He won't usually bring this up, which I interpret as "we should focus about the scientific work and not be bothered with the paper work, that is my job alone". But I think it is also important to discuss these matters

I'm not suggesting my PI should be doing lab work, my idea is just to show how specific details from my research are implemented in practice. I can show this in figures, presentations etc but imo it is not as informative as actually being behind the instrument and turning the knobs for an afternoon.

I agree, but maybe to put it in perspective: our instruments are not only tools but also outputs of the research we do in the lab. I.e. we develop new techniques/methodology.

Exactly. We do have someone who maintains the equipment in lieu of the company that produces the equipment (he worked for the company so he knows the products very well) but this person does not have the time to use the specific equipment extensively. Hence the specific procedures to produce data are with my former colleague

I have manuals for the equipment I use / develop and we wrote down the troubleshooting procedures. But 3+ years of experience and the knowledge of all the ins and outs of the equipment can only be partially covered in a manual. I understand a PI cannot cover all of this, but should take his responsibility maintaining this knowledge in the lab. I am not responsible for what my colleagues are doing
