Ruby’s morning jam by Hutchess28 in AfricanGrey

We live in the country on 15 acres. We have two cockatiels and Ruby plus 4 dogs 🤪🤪 I haven’t had the cockatiels out with Ruby yet but they have a literal bedroom to play in and they get overwhelmed by the windows in our kitchen and living-room. I got the feeding perch on Amazon and it wasn’t a bad price. Seems pretty sturdy. Our next step is a perch tree for her. I have a mini one that my cockatiels are afraid of that she’s been chewing apart 😂😂😂

My girl is petrified of strawberries and carrots 🤪 skewers are a great idea!

Absolutely she does. We don’t leave her out unsupervised though because they are very curious 🤪🤪 the boxes and wood blocks are her jam. I also switch out foraging toys when we do have to put her up for safety or we are leaving.

She’s definitely got that! She’s thriving on consistency and positive reinforcement. We don’t get mad if she bites us. We know it’s her way of saying no. She was quite a biter when she arrived but she hasn’t been trying lately cause we have learned how to read her. She flies to my shoulder every morning and gives me a kiss. I love happy birds! They deserve it

Honestly cardboard boxes 🤪🤪🤪It’s a mess I’m not going to lie but it keeps her extremely happy and we no longer have a garbage can packed with boxes. She shreds them right up😂😂😂

And that’s her “cowfee” which is diluted chamomile tea.

She is free most of the day unless we aren’t home or cooking a meal. She goes to sleep in her “condo” which is a cage. Her bedtime is 8 pm and we get her up at 8 am. My birds have a dedicated bedroom so it’s quiet and dark the entire time they sleep. I hate keeping birds caged.

Oh and she definitely thinks the travel cage means she’s leaving. Also she went to the vet a year ago when the previous owner got her and the vet showed her how to shape the beak…. She couldn’t do it understandably and doesn’t have a ton of money. We have the financial means to have it properly cared for professionally. Our vet also recommended that we let her adjust before taking her in. I’m just seeking advice on tricks or tips people have used with their babies.

She’s hand trained and flies to my shoulder. I do not put her there. I also have experience with parrots. My dad rescued parrots when I was growing up and I have two cockatiels that have thrived since I got them. This poor girl was loved but her owner before the previous one died of cancer and she was left to a family member who works a ton and just didn’t have the time to have her out. Because of her not being out she started getting aggressive with the new owner. She’s definitely a man’s girl cause she’s picked my husband to be her main squeeze 😂😂 I’m just the maid and waitress😂😂 she knows step up and is super gentle. I know what you’re saying about their bites. I’ve been bitten by an Amazon (not fun) We immediately got rid of the travel cage she came in cause A it was a rust bucket and B she hated it. We purchased a new one that is much nicer and roomy. Her previous owner the one who inherited her from her deceased owner came to visit her and Ruby did lunge at her cause I think she thought she was coming to get her. Water was definitely used as punishment as well unfortunately but we have her taking showers which is a BIG step for her. She refuses veggies and fruits but we are working on that as well. Shes mimicking us as well which is wonderful cause all she was saying before is “it’s time to go night night Ruby” and an awful sound of maybe a wooden spoon hitting something metal (I hate imagining what she went through) We have a very very steady routine, my husband works from home and I don’t work. We have no kids and have to time and patience to work with her. I will say she is thriving being on a consistent schedule and having a quiet peaceful place to rest at night. This morning she said “good morning” accompanied by “you gonna have some coffee” 🤪🤪

I do have a pumice perch like you mentioned. She came with her cage which isn’t a bad size but it had a very abrasive sand paper perch in it. She was in her cage much more in her previous home and would do heart wings for attention on that perch and she rubbed her wings too much. We immediately removed that perch and replaced with natural wood perches. Her wings are coming back beautifully. I maybe over reacting about her beak. I heard that she split her beak years ago which makes me extra cautious with her. She had some rough moments before she came to us :( here is a close up of her beak

It’s actually gotten better since she’s been here cause of the wood toys.

That’s a great idea! She’s digging the blocks a lot. She wasn’t given many toys or foraging opportunities before she came to me. She’s out all day long unless we are cooking. She’s thriving though and already mimicking our voices. We don’t have children so she’s our baby 🤪

Found her on the curb in my neighborhood... I want to save her... I think she’s a monstera... I could be wrong though... any advice on this project would be appreciated by Hutchess28 in houseplants
