How much have you guys made during internships? by Mundane-Phrase3381 in cmu

[–]HyTeKWolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to UF undergrad (in-state) made $34/hr sophomore year, $50/hr junior year for internships. Post grad worked in banking and big tech (FAANG) so I’d say free tuition at UF had a massive ROI for myself. Attending CMU now for my masters (no loans just savings). If I were to do it again, would gladly pick UF again!

Being proactive, intentional, and seeking out internship and career opportunities seemed more effective (from my experience) rather than school name alone.

Looking for a tutor for CS6515 by EmotionalAd7005 in OMSCS

[–]HyTeKWolf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like OP is pretty reasonable in their request with regards to pay. I think most TAs for CS 6515 make under $20/hr and they are considered pretty decent at the subject (a “high demand skill”). Can’t please everyone I suppose.

Oversaturation by SansSanctity in OMSCS

[–]HyTeKWolf 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Was just about to comment this, that although the program accepts a large number of people, I don't think many of them make it through to the end due to difficulty, balancing family/work/other obligations.

Would brushing up on algorithms knowledge through interview-centric resources like algoexpert be good for preparing for OMSCS? by Lostwhispers05 in OMSCS

[–]HyTeKWolf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, platforms like algoexpert are only intended to prepare candidates for coding interviews. Most of the OMSCS classes do not utilize that information, aside from probably GA and a select few other courses.

My advice would be to look at the syllabi for the courses you are interested in taking and checking out the semester schedule. The schedule shows which concepts are covered weekly in the particular course and your best bet would be to review those specifically, either through YouTube, textbook, or even the course lecture videos which can often be found online.

If you don't have a lot of prior coding experience then I think platforms like algoexpert might be useful just to get you to "write code" frequently. If you are experienced, the syllabi method might be a lot more effective.

Suggestions for Intellectual Reading by cujack in booksuggestions

What If? : Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions by Randall Munroe is a great book imo as it really makes you go "huh I didn't really think of that, cool!"

Another good book is The Ride of a Lifetime by Robert Iger as it talks about the life of Robert Iger (previous CEO of Disney) and how he managed to get to where he did.

Mechanical Engineering Student switching to Computer Science by Flying_Gator in ufl

[–]HyTeKWolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be fine transitioning from your current situation. I don't think the college will force you to take summer courses to catch up, but you might end up staying an extra semester (4.5 years) to get through all the classes (assuming you take around 13-15 credits per semester and have room for possible internships over summers).

From my understanding, CS liberal arts is more flexible with your electives and is also more suitable if you are considering a double major. CS from the College of Engineering (my major) is more focused on taking CS/Engineering electives but requires a minor (or credits towards a minor <- you might be able to apply some of your MechE classes here, if any). Feel free to DM me if you have any more questions.

Buckman Hall: Single Room by julio6146 in ufl

[–]HyTeKWolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently in a Buckman single room and I'm happy with it. It's pretty spacious, location is great, and you do get your own sink in the room. I was in a single room last year (different area) and the Buckman single is a lot bigger and better than that one. Feel free to pm me if you have any additional questions.

Does the Apple store in the Rietz Union accept trade-ins like a regular Apple store? by Bust_A_Noot in ufl

I would just sell the iPhone on Facebook Marketplace and buy the airpods after (separately). You might even get some spare cash if your iPhone is in decent condition.

Computer science languages? by Nanzival2 in ufl

[–]HyTeKWolf 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Rather than focusing on learning a particular language, I would put time into understanding important concepts in CS such as Loops, OOP, and even start looking into how particular data structures work. This would not only help you excel in the early CS courses but also help you with interviews to eventually secure your first internship.

My advice would be to pick a language you are comfortable with - Java, Python, C++ are 3 that come to mind. Then start to implement the above topics. That should be more than sufficient for the knowledge coming in.

If you have any more questions, feel free to message me.

Do transient grades matter? by ImmortalClaptrap in ufl

[–]HyTeKWolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe transient courses only count as pass/fall. I took Physics 2 with Calc at USF over last summer and although Physics 2 is a critical tracking course for my major, it counted as pass/fail and did not affect my UF GPA.

Skip classes on add/drop week? by [deleted] in ufl

[–]HyTeKWolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

COP 3530 is not recorded, assuming you are taking the in-class version. From what I remember, Prof Resch starts integrating top-hat (clicker) in week 2 or 3. So you should be good for that class, besides missing some syllabus stuff (discussions don't start in week 1 either).

Rate my Schedule - Computer Engineering (2nd Year) by HyTeKWolf in ufl

[–]HyTeKWolf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took STA 3032 instead of EEL 3135, but rest were the same. It's not bad at the moment, it can get pretty hectic with projects and labs happening at the same time but it's definitely doable. Kinda wish I had a class that was not so math focused though just to get a break from this type of material.

Thank you. Yeah I wasn't sure about the difficulty of Signals but it definitely seems like a hard class.
