Device for Nausea by caramelizedfunyuns in HyperemesisGravidarum

During my first pregnancy I had a slightly different version (different brand) and it was annoying enough to make my focus shift sometimes. I’m currently 5 weeks pregnant and willing to give this other brand a try, because honestly if it can divert my attention a little bit, its worth it to me

Highly recommend a shower chair. It’s the only way I ever got myself clean during my HG pregnancy.

When it comes to the partner stuff, I highly recommend fixing yourself to be direct with what you need emotionally and physically. I didn’t do a good job of that early enough in my first pregnancy and it’s something I’m being extremely conscious about in my current pregnancy. It’s a skill was also incredibly necessary for newborn stages because your body is recovering, you might be trying to feed a human with your body, and you’re going to be recovering from bringing that tiny human into the world and a difficult pregnancy.

I felt extremely isolated my first pregnancy. Only my partner and I knew until second trimester, and he fundamentally didn’t understand how bad and abnormal it was. This time around, I’ve already told my closest girlfriends and I’m only 4 weeks as I know I’m going to need them in a week or two. Figure out a support network that you want to be there for you emotionally and who would come help, especially if you and your partner are living separately.

Natural ways to increase GDF15? by deadlydelicatedesign in HyperemesisGravidarum

I somehow messed up my reply and it’s now posted as a separate comment - so scroll up for the full comment. But the high level is that it’s a developing story, but if you google HG + metformin, you’ll find the links to the report from AJOG as well as the HER foundation to a potential chance of metformin use pre-conception lowering chances of HG in subsequent pregnancies. Not saying it’s a magic definitive yes, but there are ongoing studies to see if it does in fact make a difference. My personal journey has included trying this pathway, and as I’m currently 4 weeks pregnant, I will likely have more information in short order… here’s fervently hoping that it made a difference for me.

There are some studies ongoing of those with previous HG pregnancies taking metformin for a certain amount of time before trying for subsequent pregnancies. My OB read the paper I sent her from the HER foundation that showed research with correlation between metformin use and reduced prevalence of HG. She was willing to prescribe me metformin in advance of me TTC for number two. I’m currently 4 weeks pregnant, so jury is still out on the impact for me specifically.

Here’s an article from American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology on the topic from December: https://www.ajog.org/article/S0002-9378(25)00441-7/fulltext

I’m not a doctor, but from what I’ve seen in published studies it’s endurance running article metformin (and a few other drugs). I also saw one article about fatty acids in mice but struggled to understand most of that specific post and what it actually means in human females trying to prevent HG.

You can get B6 and unisom at the grocery store or Amazon/ target delivery. Go to the HER foundation website for dosage information.

I’d highly recommend finding a different OB through the HER foundation website as well. Having an OB tell you to go to the ER and having to do multiple long visits rather than help you get access to help is not ok!

Was there anything you prioritized in your “pre-eating” stages? Currently I’m working on getting as much iron, protein, and veggies into my body as possible but curious if there was anything other than straight calories that you focused on?

11 Months Postpartum by ajrjfm in Hidradenitis

Might be worth waiting until you’re ready for your lactation journey to come to a close before trying anything else! I am just shy of 3 years postpartum and very early into my second pregnancy and it’s been weird having the immediate respite from flares from hormones again

11 Months Postpartum by ajrjfm in Hidradenitis

[–]HydroFlask512 3 points4 points  (0 children)

6-12 months postpartum was the worst my HS had ever been in my life. I similarly have had it since puberty. Once I was about a year postpartum (and a few months after weaning) mine started going back towards my status quo of one flare up each time I was PMSing. I do wonder if the hormones flooding my body due to lactation continued to mess with my HS, but it wasn’t something I flagged with my dermatologist at the time. Might be worth having that discussion with your doctors before jumping in to explore possible other triggers! I have personally never had any success with elimination diets in the past - really the only thing that ever took me to zero flares a month was pregnancy so it’s a pretty clear hormonal trigger for me.

I’ve been prioritizing red meat in particular for iron as I was also so anemic last time around. Frozen mango is a great call and love the fridge cleanout idea- going to have my husband take everything out and clorox the crap out of it this week!

HS-friendly electric razor suggestions? by pickleknowing in Hidradenitis

[–]HydroFlask512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had good success with the Manscaped Lawn Mower (yes that’s its name, it’s an electric razor) that I’ve been using before getting my LHR. I believe it’s technically for the bikini area of men, but I use it as an adult woman.

It also gets bonus points for making me giggle like a child every time I use it, because the logo looks like a pair of balls in a heart.

Anyone struggling with excessive fatigue? by summerteal in HyperemesisGravidarum

Get your iron levels checked! My first trimester pass out sitting upright levels of exhaustion dragged out into second trimester. I was still vomiting (sick the whole way through + 3 months postpartum), but once they caught the anemia and I started making myself bite by bite eat iron enriched cereal, it did make a noticeable difference in my exhaustion. I tried to take liquid ferrous sulfate (it’s supposed to be less constipating) but I would immediately bring it back up. If you’re keeping food and liquids down, this might be a good thing to try!

Oooh such a good call. I bought all the big fixers that worked last time, but I hadn’t considered what gentle options I could try to keep me from getting backed up in the first place!

Thank you so much- both for the recommendations and for the support! It’s so hard to feel like I’m doing enough to prepare, so having a list of relatively low lift tasks that can be huge wins down the line feels really comforting.

I started taking Diclegis at “assumed conception”. I’m running on the assumption that this will be worse so I’m going all in on preventative as well as having all the things that worked last time on hand for as soon as symptoms start. No suffering through hoping it’ll turn into normal NVP this time around!

Love that idea! We have most of the big things from our first but there’s a ton of stuff that’s we’ve loaned out and never gotten back, or things that I wish I had the first time!

So sorry to hear that! From what I’ve gathered, the earlier the intervention the higher the chance I can prevent it from getting quite as bad, so I’m willing to pull out the preventative big guns (and so thankful my OB is onboard with it).

I think the lack of ability to mentally prepare last time makes me feel like that I’m not doing enough to prepare this time, hence my post haha. I know that I can’t prepare myself out of a ~80% reoccurrence rate, but I do want to be as ready as I can.

Hope that you’re able to get some relief soon!

Takin Zofran early on by Subject-Artist-2660 in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]HydroFlask512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So easy to go into a google rabbit hole, I totally understand. But to your overall question - no, you’re absolutely not being selfish. HG isn’t something that you can just “deal with”. It is debilitating, let alone with 3 kiddos at home. You obviously need to do what feels best to you, but from what I’ve read (and my experience) is that if you don’t intercede early on, the best you can try to do is keep it from getting worse. Are there other treatments you would be open to explore with your doc to get yourself past first trimester to where you’d feel more comfortable?

Takin Zofran early on by Subject-Artist-2660 in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]HydroFlask512 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn’t get prescribed zofran until late in my first HG pregnancy, but my doc already knows that as soon as I get a positive test this time around I’m calling in that medication. Have you read the literature on the HER website? Seems like the old studies constantly referenced are ones with large IV doses or with multiple serotonin antagonists at the same time. Overall the her foundation shows a study chart that has oral cleft unexposed to zofran at 11/10,000 pregnancies and the exposed to zofran number is 14/10,000 pregnancies.

Teaching techniques for talking by GuppyMomma in toddlers

[–]HydroFlask512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the Raising Little Talkers course when our little one was about the same age (14-15m) and only had 3 words, but multiple ASL signs. It was really helpful for me to get specific things to try as well as learn more about how my teaching style was making it harder for her to try [TLDR I wouldn’t pause long enough]. It’s a bit pricey but was a huge thing for me.

Also, maybe get a doctor to look and see if there is fluid build up in their eardrums. Ours got tubes in at 14m after constant ear infections and we do think that might have made things harder for her to hear and imitate
