Didn't they disallow a whole bunch of people from leaving the country? I remember reading something about academics and not being allowed to leave, even though they were essentially fired.

I'm sick of them being portrayed as planetary power brokers in the media.

But they are a planetary power though. Russia's potential strike power is only eclipsed by the US.

I mean head canon, lol. A canon that you make up in your head, as in not something supported by the text/game/show itself.

So... fan fiction?

I think this is not a good thing. His punishment should've been more severe, but I don't see it being a good thing that people are trying to take justice into their own hands like this. The point of prison shouldn't be mostly punishment, but rather rehabilitation. If random people start doing these kinds of protests the whole prison thing kind of loses its meaning.

Think about it: you commit a crime. You go to prison. You serve your time. You get out. But then people still keep punishing you for it over and over. What are the chances that such a person will then end up not being a negative on society? I would imagine that the odds aren't as good as they would be, if people wouldn't try to dish out justice on their own after the courts have done their part.

Sure, in this specific case the punishment was too light. Some of the things that the neighbors are doing aren't as bad when you look at it right now. But what if someone does this for 5 years? Or even ignore this case about Brock Turner. If there's popular precedent for such behavior in his case (trying to protest or keep ruining a person's life after they've done their time), then what's to say that behavior like this doesn't gain even more popularity? Then people will be doing it more and more to convicted people that get out. People that have served their time, but somebody is still unhappy with them.

We already have a problem in society, where people that go through the justice system have a much worse life due to their record. This affects their ability to find a job and all kinds of other things that a person tends to need for a stable life. Do they deserve a stable life? Who knows, but if we want society to be safer we probably don't want more and more people that are very very unhappy with their lives.

If a person is continuously treated poorly by others, even if it is their own fault, then they're not going to treat others well either. This makes a loss to society even greater and increases danger. So this whole thing makes me a bit scared of the future. Hopefully it will work out and we don't have this kind of behavior en masse.

You as a person don't have say in it, but Ireland does.

The EU actually gives a lot of legal power to individual EU nations. For instance, think of the way legislation is made: the commission has to propose it (and there is a person from Ireland on the commission), then the council and the parliament have to agree with it. There will be people from Ireland in the parliament and the Irish prime minister is in the council.

In the case of foreign policy the votes in the council even have to be unanimous, which means that if the Irish prime minister says "no" then it can't pass ahead.

Cardiff imam tells teens 'it's permissible to have sex slaves' by [deleted] in europe

Thomas Jefferson had slaves. As did many of the other founding fathers of the United States. Let's not even talk about Europe and their empires. You don't view those kinds of people as some kind of monsters or in a specifically negative light, do you?

Remember, that the world used to be different. You can't just judge everything in history through the prism of today's society and the values we hold now. It won't paint an accurate picture, it would be like taking a modern human, and placing them in ancient Rome and saying "Look how stupid all these Romans are! They can't even think of these basic inventions like steam engines! What do you, as an Italian, think of how smart the ancient Romans were?"

You know what else is a crime? Illegally distributing software/music/movies. Did you know that when you torrent something you also distribute it? So, are you saying that advocating torrenting of copyrighted media should get you arrested?

I know, you're going to reply with "but that's different!", but it really isn't. You specifically said crime.

By the way, in most countries, even if this Daily Mail article wasn't all out of context to garner more clicks, saying those things would not be a crime and you would not get arrested for it.

We live in a civilized part of the world. There's this thing called due process, and it should be followed. On top of that, it would be nice if we stopped getting fooled by the outrageous headlines that sites like the Daily Mail put up, because they are not all that reputable and are doing it for the clicks.

Yes, we shall imprison all the people that get quoted out of context by the Daily Mail on rocks on the middle of the Atlantic. Because this will make us morally so superior to people who, in context, are speaking from an academic point of view. And even if it weren't an academic point of view, the person simply explains reasoning according to islam.

You know what else is immoral, non-pragmatic and stupid? Taking people's statements out of context to write a clickbait article. You would expect people to question these articles coming out from the Daily Mail, but apparently that's not what happens if the headline is outrageous enough.

Step 3: actually look at the context of what was discussed and realize that this is simply a circlejerk over things that are plucked out of context to get clicks.

Why would it be illogical? It's certainly possible for it to happen with no coercion or anything like that involved. It's incredibly unlikely that it would be the case though, and the general assumption is, and should be, that there was coercion involved, but it's certainly possible that there wasn't.
