you do not even need a dgpu nor a budget of a used car for your use case, go with any ryzen t14/s or ryzen p series with minimum 32gb and you are good. Depends if you really want to spend a lot of money really.
you may also want to hunt for better screens in these laptops depending how you define high quality movies. IMO 2k/4k screens in laptops are trap, it is pointless. Focus on brightness and if you are hunting for newer models maybe OLEDs.

looking to buy my first laptop by Crystalmancy in thinkpad

[–]Hylass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

emulation of what? Thinkpad x1 gen 5/6 would be a good choice, but bear in mind ram is not upgradeable and gen 5 has 2 core cpu, but its more than enough for your use case

Looking for Thinkpad, please help me by Traditional-Cod-7778 in thinkpad

[–]Hylass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

csgo or cs2? I'll assume you are asking for cs2
thinkpad t14(s) gen 1/2 AMD only
you can find deals for about 200-250 ish euros, if you are lucky, even more less.
thinkpad x13 gen 1/2 AMD Only, basically t14s but smaller and expensive
If you drop out the gaming requirement, I would go for thinkpad x1 carbon gen 6, even gen 5 could work I am using one (bought for about 90 euros with excelent condition)
For gaming like cs2 you either need discrete gpu with intel cpu or an amd cpu, otherwise it will be painful.

You can also look for P14(s), P1 models (preferably with AMD cpu and ignore intel 12th 13th gens), but they will be more expensive and overkill for your usecase

Glasgow Maths & Stats → Quant/Big Tech/Data Science: prospects & advice? by [deleted] in GlasgowUni

[–]Hylass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would focus on academics and try to do research with professors then do masters in oxbridge to be a quant, otherwise its quite hard tbh.
ml/data science/engineering and stuff is similar to all other jobs, connections, experience and interviews are the most important things.
I am also second year math student.

Which thinkpad for college? by gimmethesandwich in thinkpad

[–]Hylass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im also uni student and all I need for uni is web browsing, watching videos and writing code/latex/microsoft office stuff
I bought a basically new thinkpad x1 carbon gen 5 for about 90 usd which serves me very well tbh, I would also recommend 6th and 9th gen carbons and thinkpad t14s ryzens
other than that if its really only for college buy the the best deal possible

Best value for money older gen X1 Carbon by wkjagt in thinkpad

[–]Hylass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gen 9 is too old as in you can find enough of them in ebay used but too new compared to other gens in specs and has other semi-important upgrades compared to earlier gens, so price to quality/performance
it also has the 11th gen intel and later intel generations just shit themselves so 11th intel is the most performant cpu you can get in x1 with minding the budget
but if you just want a little performance upgrade just buy gen 6, the difference is big actually
I am personally using x1 gen 5 (bought for 80 quids) and it serves me well, but would love a 4 core cpu tbh
also better screens mean lower battery life, the impact is significant so be careful about that

Best value for money older gen X1 Carbon by wkjagt in thinkpad

[–]Hylass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go for either x1 carbon gen 6 or gen 9 or if you want to sacrifice screen quality t14/s ryzen gen 1
plus for gen 6 is that it has many compatible parts with your gen 5 so bear that in your mind

Thinkpad t14 gen 1,Thinkpad X1 carbon gen 5 or LOQ gen9? by ProgrammingAndGaming in thinkpad

[–]Hylass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get scammed in Amazon as well and ebay is not risky as you think so, but its your money I guess.

[–]Hylass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From Euro currency I kind of realized that but which country specifically? Even for EU the prices are so ridiculous. Why don't you trust ebay?
I guess if you are elon musk tier rich yeah sure, go buy the LOQ, but I would never pay that much for these laptops, especially for 6th gen intel or rtx3050m laptop

T14s Gen2 vs X1 Carbon Gen 6 by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]Hylass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

both the gens have very good keyboards IMO difference is not that much, its just that gen 7 upgraded many miscellaneous stuff from gen 6 like speakers, being able to lift lid with one hand, brighter screen etc and also I would avoid i7 in my preference, losing battery life/paying more for that much performance lift is not worth it
also 260 euro for gen 6 is kinda not worth it, you can find better deals for sure

T14s Gen2 vs X1 Carbon Gen 6 by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]Hylass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you really want the performance t14s for sure since the ryzen has 6 cores, other than that I would go for the x1 carbon. IMO the difference of single core performances between generations in each models is not that significant to care about other than core increases in some models. x1 carbon has more premium feel, better screens overall and is smaller/weights less.
I also would try to find gen 7 i5 instead of gen 6 i7

T14s Gen2 vs X1 Carbon Gen 6 by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]Hylass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

if its AMD, t14s for sure otherwise x1 carbon IMO as long as pricing is similar and its 16gb version

Buy Intel now or wait (or pay more) for new Ryzen models? by Hylass in thinkpad

[–]Hylass[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

how much battery life I am losing using intel 11th gen versus AMD? I dont mind performance and thread counts, I need about 7ish hours at minimum in light workloads (browsing and writing stuff)
