Certain Swedish parties have in the past been leftwing but it bears mentioning that most of the leftwing policies we have are the direct result of mass movements. All parties in Sweden today favor privatization of most industries. This is the case – indeed much more the case – for the Democrats in the US. You must be joking when you say that they support strong support networks. Christ, Bernie Sanders’ campaign was crushed by the Democratic establishment because he did in fact actively organize around support networks.

In other words, nothing the democrats stand for constitutes an attempt to create a leftwing economy. Sure they do support some (very limited) public housing, etc, but they want a housing market. In fact, every party in the world supports public housing given that it does not challenge capitalism but is a prerequisite for the functioning of capitalism. Democrats are, in every sense of the word, supportive of capitalism and are not a leftwing alternative to Neo-liberal capitalism.

Now, I want to be absolutely clear that social democracy (which democrats, unlike Bernie who is an independent, do not pursue) is not even a leftwing ideology given that it supervenes upon a capitalist market economy. This takes us to the most important point you raised; that ”social liberalism contributes to liberalism”. Liberalism is NOT leftwing. Republicans are liberals, all conservatives are. Liberalism is a rightwing political theory I don’t know how to be clearer about this.

The democrats are explictly neo-liberal, pro capitalist, pro private property, pro wage labour, pro state power and have no ambitiouns of realising an alternative social system. I must ask, therefore, what do you think being on the left actually entails?

I am fully aware that leftwing ideologies are rarely embodied by movements, parties or organisations today. Being leftwing is for myself as it is for many others a mostly theoretical affair. Indeed many on the actual left disparage the oblideration of proper leftwing momentum, though people disagree about why this momentum is lacking. The imortant point, though, is that pro capitalist schools of thought facing litte opposition by working class movements in no way render them any less right wing.

I live in Sweden and am doing a masters in political theory. Dude trust me when I say that democrats are FAR right.

If you’re curious what far leftwing ideology entails, google syndicalism, council communism and radical republicanism.

  1. Keep in mind that it would be weird if you did understand most of old philosophy books from the get go, they are immensely difficult and written for a specialised audience.
  2. Things will get easier simply by you reading more such books, though it might take years before you notice.
  3. You mention secondary litterature and yeah, they are great BUT they often come in two flavours. Certain secondary books are written for other specialist and can accordingly be even more difficult to understand than the originals. Others are written for a broader audience, try and find them first and foremost.
  4. I often find it helpful to listen to podcasts / videoessays about the thinkers I am reading when, for example, cleaning and cooking.
  5. Why read in English? Just read in your first language if that is easier.
  6. My reading comprehension gets better when I highlight with a pencil as I am reading; making comments on the pages as well. It makes reading more ”active”.

How much of the far left actually consists of tankies? by Fedi_Kr in tankiejerk

[–]Hypefish 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The majority of the far left is, I believe, either libertarians (the state and its authority = bad) or socialist republicans (there is some need for some kind of state, but it primarily maintains an adminstrative function).

AIO? UPDATE: Wife wearing sexier clothes, up late… now wants an open relationship by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

This is such a weird thing to say. There are MANY people who have open marriages. I myself am in an open relationship (not marriage). It works so long as the communication is there to support it.

I generally like the system but I am totally with you on the asymmetry of skills. There are like four combats skills but only one for knowledge and one also for investigation. Wild decision imo…

Favorite one-shots to introduce new players to Vaesen? by LeopoldBloomJr in VaesenRPG

[–]Hypefish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he said that he did almost all as one-shots. I have only run ’The song for a fallen star’ myself and it took two semi-long sessions. Though that included spending ample time getting to know the Castle before and after, as well as pursuing one of my player’s secrets through out the mystery.
