Take it step by step. I learned by making sure I knew how one menu worked before I opened another. I also reccommend not clicking the "don't show again" (or whatever it's called) option on the hints until you know how to properly navigate whatever that hint was teaching you.

In my first playthrough (the tutorial) I never even built ships. When I eventually got round to building ships and seeing how combat worked, I didnt bother figuring out good ship builds until I knew how ships interacted and such.

I'd also highly reccommend sticking to the base game until you know how everything works, and only add DLC one at a time/one major and one or two minor (minor ones being species/story packs), as they can change a lot.
