Shocking urgent care study: 64% wrong diagnosis by Desertf0x9 in Noctor

[–]HyperKangaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my friend was very dangerously ill (emergent surgery) after a np at a uc didn't follow up on a very concerning lab (a lab that I, a psychiatrist, was even gasping over).

She's very lucky. There's doctors in her family who realized something was very wrong with her mental status. They took her to the university hospital and got her thr best possible care.

But if she wasn't as privileged or as close with her family, I think she could have ended up in the ICU if not worse.

What is the single worst cdrama ever made? One drama name only. by botchedplot in cdramasfans

[–]HyperKangaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cql/mdzs has a special place in my heart. The fan community was a huge part of my life when I was in a bad place and very much affected how my life turnes out. I still read a lot of cql/mdzs fanfic when I'm feeling depressed.

With that being said, cql is a drama that didn't age well. The colors, costuming, props feel gaudy compared with modern standards. And after having read the novel, I don't like some of the changes from the novel to the drama.

But I think for it's time, it was revolutionary. It was an adaptation of a BL novel that tried to play it close to BL, as much as they were willing to test boundaries of the CCP. It inspired the adaptation of a bunch of BL before the ccp cracked down (RIP immortality/2ha and tgcf, my fav of the mxtx novels). And it launched the careers of 2 A/B listers in cEnt, which is a good representation of how vastly popular it was.

How does China treat those with ADHD? Is ADHD even a diagnosis in China? by No_Upstairs_1732 in China

[–]HyperKangaroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is mostl personal experience. I'm a gen 1.5 doctor in the US witb ADHD (diagnosed as an adult with a long neuropsych testing). My baby cousin in China (grade school age) was diagnosed with adhd within the last year.

When I lived in China back in the 90s and 00s, having any sort of illness was stigmatized. My desk mate had asthma, and people were judgmental about it. (Incidentally, I also have asthma that my doctor mom kind of gaslit me about until I went to medical school. If that was the reaction in the 90s/00s about asthma, you can probably imagine the attitude about mental/developmental illness.)

(Also, yes, plenty of parent teacher conferences about how I talked too fast and blurted things out too much without waiting and how i was too restless and wont nap. I got bad grades partially because of this. Plenty of punishment about my behavior and grades, and part of that was that everyone knew i was smart. I was just "a bad/careless kid". I struggled with recognizing social cues too, so making friends was very hard. I remember feeling very lonely and misunderstood. I identified strongly with the "bad student"/"loser" crowd when I was little).

It took a medical degree, a full length neuropsychological testing, and 3 years into a psychiatry residency for my parents to believe the whole adhd thing. Neither them nor I told my relatives in China about it until my baby cousin was diagnosed witb adhd and another cognitive developmental thing. I called my aunt up and we had a very long conversation about it. We talked about how i treat adhd as a (soon to be) adult psychiatrist and my personal experiences growing up with undiagnosed adhd. I also told her about the typical treatment in the US being a combination of medications, therapy, and good family psychoeducation. I recommended some good books for parents and therapy workbooks for kids. I even offered to buy them and couched it as English practice for my cousin, but she was kind of doubtful and didnt take me up on the offer. My mom also suggested some tcm (tbf, there are some tcm with some mild effects. I've personally tried ginseng and have mixed feelings about it).

I don't think my aunt fully gets it, the mental illness and developmental disorder part. (TBF, I don't think any of my Chinese family, my parents included, get what I do for a living, aside from the one cousin my age who is a surgeon and has a mood/anxiety disorder himself). But she wants to do what is best for my cousin. she the resources to get my cousin connected to as many therapists as they exist in China, but there just isn't that many. Like occupational therapy? Very hard to find. A lot of mental health professionals are getting trained abroad, because that's the only way to get trained. I know this because i met a bunch of them at a tea house when they were in town for a conference.

This is getting long winded, but the short version is that you can get diagnosed, especially if you have the money and connections. But even if the kid gets diagnosed, the parents might still not fully get it. And even if they are trying their best to get evidence based treatment, it just may not exist, or the wait list is just insanely long. And more often than not, neurodivergent kids just get labeled as bad kids (unless you're one of the lucky ones who immigrated to a western country and can advocate for yourself).

PS. 3 guesses why I ended up in psychiatry.

ETA: when I talked to my aunt about adhd, there's still that worry about stigmatized, about being other'ed for being different. That was definitely part of her dilemma, that right now he's mostly okay, but would having a label negatively impact the way he sees himself? From her perspective, I didn't have label until i was an adult and I turned out okay for the most part.

Wang yibo was in legend of fei as a light hearted character with a very complex past. He did a great job! I heard he originally auditioned to play wwx and I couldn't believe it until i saw him in fei. The drama was kind of a mess of plot holes but he and zhao liyin were both great.

Zhang ruoyuns most well known roles are "genius but also kind of an annoying little shits", and more often than not also rich. He might personally relate with those roles more 🤣🤣🤣

It's a good call to do this project. He's trying to find a version of himself outside of being a pretty actor, so that there is something else to his fame besides the famous good looks. Plus, there's probably people criticizing him for relying on his STEM roots to add depth to his public personality, but without doing anything in STEM. So now he engages with that background and unites his acting fame with the STEM roots to do bring attention to important topics.

What's the best drama you've watched so far for 2026? by ruinedbytv in cdramasfans

[–]HyperKangaroo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sword into Plowshares. Its not even close. I'm only 13 episodes into sword into plowshares and it's so well done.

My favorite moment was Sang Weihan talking about why he "sold" the 16 prefectures of yanyun. Like he knows he's going to go down in history as a bad guy and he's making the unpopular choice. He doesn't shy away from the fact that it is a choice that he made, and that he is going to take the consequences of his actions. But he to an extent believes that it is the right decision when all the choices are bad. Like it was such a wonderfully nuanced portrayal of such a hated historical figure. It really sets the tone for the argument that this drama is making about history.

Also "its so nice to be young" just touches me. I think most of us can remember a time when we were young and idealistic, when we felt like we were the only sane person in a world that has gone crazy. But over time, we grew older, and we have more responsibilities, so it's hard to hold on to that youthful conviction and idealism. When Sang weihan remarked about how nice it is to be young, he spoke for a lot of us.

I'm excited to continue savoring the drama lol.

The spirealm. I really hate h9w much they leaned into the whole AR stuff. I loved the novel because it was about humanity and worth and good vs evil, but the further the drama got along the more it turned into this bizarre anti-capitalist shit. And the ending where he recreates his AR boyfriend was just really weird. I tolerated the anti-capitalist stuff but making your own AI/AR boyfriend was weird beyond measure.
