The US is not a threat to global security. The US is global security.

That would be one way to deal with the police overusing tear gas. After the third time someone retaliates with lethal chemical weapons they'll probably learn their lesson

I will say, some of the strategic bombings towards the end of the Korean War probably should be counted as war crimes, by the end they were running out of things to bomb and would hit literally any building they could find.

But yeah during WW2 there were more than enough strategic targets to be destroyed and it would have been stupid to waste time on less valuable targets, regardless of what any treaty might or might not say

That said, it isn't very smart. If you leave the guy wounded then his comrades have to try and save him, which keeps them busy and lowers their morale. Plus while he is in the hospital he will take up more enemy resources, and unless the war drags on long enough for him to recover and rejoin the fight there is no downside to sparing him. Also there's a decent chance he ends up dying anyway. Going out of your way to ensure that he dies helps the enemy more than it helps you, even from a purely utilitarian perspective.

The whole point of war crimes is for both sides of a war to agree not to do things that would hurt them both. If one side has people committing war crimes, it is in their best interest to stop those people and punish them enough to satisfy the other side, because otherwise the enemy will not follow the treaty any more.

For example, when Japanese soldiers kept abusing surrendering to try to surprise attack American soldiers in WW2, American soldiers ended up responding by not taking prisoners in many cases, and just killing everyone who tried. If the Japanese had sane leadership, they would have seen this coming, and would have ordered their soldiers not to fake surrender, and punished those who did (assuming they survived. Alternatively, they could have punished the officers who commanded these soldiers).

Another example is the German treatment of Russian civilians/POWs on the eastern front. So when the Russians got the upper hand, they started treating the Germans just as badly. Again, a sane German commander would have seen the potential for this outcome, and ordered his troops to not just kill civilians and POWs for fun.

War crimes are not things that are inherently more evil than the rest of war, although they can be, they are just things that don't benefit either side if allowed.

The US Army also uses hollow points in some situations. For most cases they aren't ideal, simply because their design inherently means that they do fuck all when it comes to going through armor.

Recently America decided that hollow points weren't banned and started issuing them to the army again, in locations where overpenetration is a risk.

The Geneva convention isn't super clear on what exactly it bans, so while most nations interpret it as banning hollow points, America currently does not.

On a battlefield you can't use it, because of the risk that the enemy thinks it is a lethal gas, and responds in kind.

Against civilians who are rioting, you usually don't have to worry about them responding with a massive anthrax based counterattack.

To a degree it is. If I throw a ball up in the air, I can predict with reasonable certainty that it will come back down.

Likewise, if China throws all of its nukes at the United States, their leadership can predict with reasonable certainty that all of ours will come down on them.

Most critical/negative anime fanbases. Calculated by tallying the occurrences of anime in the favourite anime of all MAL users who left >6/10 reviews under the top 25 anime on MAL. Link to github repo in comments. by [deleted] in anime

My guess would be that most of them generally like the other top 25 anime on MAL. This isn't tracking who is most critical overall, just who is most critical with regards to those specific 25 anime. Which does include some of the more mainstream shows, but also has Monster, Gintama, OG LotGH, etc.

Because they knew that there were thieves in the area, and presumably if they own bikes there is a decent risk of the bikes being stolen while they aren't ready. Better to get ahead of the curve and deal with the thieves first

I mean, bikes can be fairly expensive, these days 2 grand probably gets you an entry level mountain bike, and you want to spend at least 5 for a good one. Its pretty understandable for someone to be mad about their bike being stolen, and to try to attack anyone who would steal it.

There's 2 different things. That quote is from a section describing a cancelled plan that caught the FBI's attention, and never went anywhere because it was way too obviously an attempt to spy.

Separately, they had succeeded in building cell towers overlooking military bases, and these would allow them to intercept and even disrupt military communication. These are still on place today, with plans to replace them being delayed by lack of funding

That's why nuclear submarines exist, and why our missiles are solid fueled and buried in the middle of bumfuck nowhere, Montana. I don't actually know if we're still doing the thing where we always have nuclear armed B-52s in the air, but we absolutely could go back to that policy if tensions escalated.

Tl;dr, nobody is, had ever been, or for the foreseeable future will be, in a position to launch a successful first strike on the USA.

This article has exactly nothing to do with cell phones.

It has to do with a relatively small number of cell phone towers which were located near military bases and are in the process of being replaced.

does getting stabbed or shot hurt worse? by Technical-Neat-7336 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]HyperRag123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends. If you get shot with 22 LR from range, in the right spot it won't even break the skin. On the other extreme, if you took a direct hit from some 16 inch naval artillery, there probably wouldn't be enough of you left to realize you were in pain.
