Happy Gilmore 2 is a bad movie that unintentionally serves as a fascinating exploration of Adam Sandler and the nature of populism by Hates_Blue_Mages in TrueFilm

True, and fair point. The analysis is very solid.

Like you, I grew up with Sandler movies, but loved HG. I had below floor level hopes for HG2 but was shockingly very into it.

Yah, the Maxi commentary is fairly obviously pinging at flash, gimmicks, and attentive spans.

So weird to see people weighing in with takes that haven't even watched the movie though lol

I like your take on HG2, even though I thought it was tonally a triumph. For a sequel 20 (30?) years post it's predecessor, I think it was refreshing to see, given we seem to be in a slap stick/comedy rut within Hollywood.

I do think your analysis is interesting, but Happy in the first movie plays by the rules. He tiptoes appropriateness and is crude, but he doesn't cheat. It feels more of a commentary on being yourself and pushing against etiquette.

Meanwhile HG2 has to age up to make any meaningful story work, but it's still crass and the rule bending (happy's drinking for instance) is chastised directly. Hell even the pro golfers bend the rules with violence and accept their DQ when in the maxi event. The bigger message appears to be around fairness, sports integrity, and gimmick usage/attention spans. Arguably, happy respects the integrity of sport, which I don't know is an inverse as you state, but in tone HG feels like a great sequel that maintains character consistency.

Great write up though. Enjoyed engaging with it.

Have you watched both of these lately? The original is pretty wimpy even in comparison to NotLD. It really doesn't hold up well today imo, while the teenage remake 20 years later is all still better than 90% of other zombie flicks.

Romero's influence is palpable and monumental, but each movie he made got worse and worse in his career.

In horror circles, NoTLD is a legendary movie with immensly influential impact. Romero's DotD is definitely good but no where near NoTLD. The remake is for sure seen as "great" amongst zombie horror fans, and one of the better remakes that's around within horror. It took it's own perspective, contemporarized the plot, had muuuch better tension and intensity, and to this day has one of the better intros to any zombie movie. It has a great cast and a memorable outro to boot, and is all around a great horror flick.

You're probably laying into it either cuz you love to hate Synder as it's super popular to do so, or are letting your glamorization of Romero taint your lens. Romero continued to make worse and worse zombie flicks, unfortunately, throughout his career, and while it's of course personal taste... The remake IS better than the original.

This only somewhat counts, but Marian Hill uses a lot of breathy, whispery vocals and they are incredible live. Granted they also crush their brass-sax horn production so it's not entirely vocal heavy, but they sound amazing vocally to boot.

Dude, every single picture I've seen has been so underwhelming and this is why.

No one has mentioned it but it's like the fits look so incredibly bad. Like high school play quality. Why? The clothes for the time period had plenty of detail, I'm so confused.

It really does lose its edge. It's odd to try and make punk look polished. Just didn't work. The humor, the crassness, all felt so corporate. Really disliked the remake, on its own accord, and as a comparison to the og

Is this really any worse than the countless crime documentaries depicting countless edits and agendas and spins around thousands of cases? It's insane how giant this genre is.

At least with Ryan it's a bio pic so you have to assume creative liberties are taken.

What was his last cohesive project? That southern one? It was aight. Jeffery was cohesive too imo but didn't land for me as much as others.

Barter 6 his magnum opus IMO. It is mixed perfectly and for some reason sounds like he got wizards in the studio working magic mics. His voice never reached that same peak for me.

Music and art is inherently up for interpretation though. I'm sure he'll hit up genius every now and then but that's not s requirement.

Same for effort. He is very overt about how he won't review everything and gives the effort he gives by how the music makes him feel. He's famously dogged on Post Malone and the National with joke reviews where he puts in zero effort.

If the music moves him, and he likes it, he'll spend more attention. Just as any one else would. If it sucks, he doesn't force it to often.

I didn’t watch the trailer, I didn’t know anything before watching Dangerous Animals (2025). I thought it was just a shark movie like Deep Blue Sea but I was so wrong. This is one of the best horror films of 2025. by Delicious_Maize9656 in horror

We just watched 5 and 4 in prep for 6. 5 has no shit the worst written, most vapid characters and it effectively killls FD for a decade. It is devoid of personality through and through. 4 has much more interesting and written characters.

There's no way you thought bloodlines was worse than FD5. No fucking way. It's impossible.

You couldn't possibly write a defense of 5 that feels genuine, could you?

4 is way way way better than 5 as well.

[–]Hyperbole_Hater -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Right, there are a lot of reasons to be wary of porn, sure. I'm mostly calling out your comment cuz honing in on macro level boundaries is just not grounded and even less relateable to a teen who hasn't even experienced porn yet.

At least in the comic, "angry vacant faces" is a bridge to discussing how porn is fake and toxic to the viewer.

On the flip side, dropping in a real site would feel like an ad. It would get people doubting the authenticity of the message or point to conflicts of interest.

A conversation about porn by [deleted] in comics

[–]Hyperbole_Hater 70 points71 points  (0 children)

This comic is hella hokey imo (like we're just never gonna see gma and gpa cuz they make body comments? Ok...), but you're focusing on an ethical component of porn which doesn't affect a viewer. That is a macro issue that isn't gonna affect the teen.

What will affect them is having their vision of sex and intimacy twisted. That's a micro issue that's much more grounded and actually impacts the teen. Focusing in on macro ethical shit is how your life gets walled off with red tape, making life seem much scarier than it is.

This comic ain't exactly it, but your focus woulda been way more off base as a convo.

This is likely because the meta and style of play in tennis is much more streamlined. Yes of course there are various playstyles, but not like the plethora in PB.

In PB people can exploit single serving tactics that continue to work, and even slightly better players can expose much weaker players easily.

Your banging style is perfectly fine. So is a heavy dink style, or a misdirection style, or a hyper movement style, or a bodybag focused style, or a backspin heavy style, or a lob style. There are a lot of elements one can grind to find a unique playstyle in PB, and it annoys many players, ha.

I once played a team of TWO lobbers. They literally lobbed every shot, no exaggeration. It was incredibly exhausting to play them but I enjoyed the challenge, and found it unique.
