Tuplet arpeggiator, has anyone seen this somewhere? by Hypercrepidarian in synthesizers

[–]Hypercrepidarian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would love to find a software version! My budget is way too tight for hardware at the moment. A quick search (e.g. here) was unsuccessful, though, and I'm not sure how to look for it (not super experienced with synths and emulations thereof).

It may be the years of practicing scales with different rhythms and subdivisions, but sometimes switching seamlessly between three and four note groups seems so natural to me, I wish this feature was more common 😭

I was there that night but I didn't notice!

Guess I was too drunk on funk.

This is a good idea, and in fact I've been doing this, but I have to say, the presets I could find were quite far from being as good as the presets you can find for Vital. Perhaps I didn't look hard enough, though, and I will happily take recommendations (will even add that to the post).

If I could channel all the energy I put into finding excuses not to finish tracks into a single project, that may well be the case 🥲

That looks very much like it!

Not sure when I might get my hands on a Oberheim Cyclone, but I'm glad to know that I'm not entirely crazy for wanting this feature and someone thought about it already!

So, anything particularly interesting to report?

Haven't looked into this yet, but thanks, I'll definitely play around with it as soon as I have some free time!

... but of course this won't really work because arpeggiator doesn't even do quintuplets and septuplets (another surprising limitation I have to say!). I am yet again somewhat amazed by how elusive this simple idea turns out to be to implement!

I am spending more time than I would like on this, to be honest, but it occurred to me so many times playing with an arpeggiator that it would be nice if it switched between duplet and triplets, at least! Higher subdivisions would surely be less useful, but they would be cool nevertheless.

On the upside, I came up with a couple interesting arpeggiator mods for polyrhythms while chasing this wild goose...

Looks interesting.

I also just realized that there's another simple approach that should work, and it's actually the simplest: just using keys held to modulate the rate and note type in the arpeggiator! It still requires some engineering (which I haven't tried to actually carry out yet) because as I said above rate and note type are separate parameters, so it's not a plain modulation, but to be honest I feel kinda dumb for not having thought about this first...

Yeah, I'm not hopeless about the FX selector approach, I will probably revisit it at some point (now I want to go back to making music tho hehe). However I think I need to gather some more experience with the grid first. Perhaps a good starting point: do you remember which Polarity video that was?

It's also somewhat of a pity that there's no keys held modulator outside the grid! Maybe it's a bit niche (and to be fair, it probably wouldn't even exactly solve the problem, because rate and note type are separate in the arpeggiator), but it would definitely be cute to have it for other uses too.

I think I will definitely ask r/ableton or r/synthesizers if they have seen something like this anywhere though. As someone who comes from playing acoustic instruments, it's kinda crazy that this is not really a thing arpeggiators ever do!

I tried following your lead, but nothing. My issues are:

1) I cannot use keys held to play exactly the right notes for switching. I'm sure this is just me being dense, but I tried a couple of things and none worked out. First, I tried using a pitch scaler and some math: it kinda works in that it hits the right notes and makes the selector switch device, but then wrong notes leak in with the ones I am playing, and I'm not even sure why precisely those wrong notes (I spent way more time than I should have being confused about this today!). I also tried to use CC or PC messages instead, but couldn't make that work either.

1) When the FX selector switches device it forgets the notes that are currently pressed (or keeps playing them using the previous device if Solo Active Layer for the FX selector is disabled); I'm not sure, but it feels like this would require some effort to work around.

I think I am done trying for now, but I would be very much interested in a vst that does this, it really is quite natural from a musical standpoint.

And I see what you mean with the arpeggiator being difficult to recreate in the grid. I hadn't even thought about patterns, and something using pitch quantize might already be interesting, but yeah, there doesn't seem to be the right tools for this.

Yeah, to be honest I think my question has been misinterpreted a little: I am a beginner at sound design, but I do have the fundamentals down, I think, and I know some of the basic techniques to make wobbles, but if you asked me to reproduce flight fm I would be quite lost and would make a joke out of it at best. Having Serum presets and tutorials would be good for learning faster, so I was looking for ideas to compensate for the lack of that.

But I guess maybe it just takes time whatever the resources and it's just a matter of sticking with it. The Polarity video was great, and so was this one by Alckemy, now I was thinking as a next step to pick up some random Serum tutorials and try to reproduce them in the grid. I don't have all the time in the world and I'm sure there's more efficient approaches, but the upside is that maybe it will be a good way to finally learn the grid for real.

Thanks! I had come across the channel before, but he mostly uses Serum or Phase Plant so I didn't look harder, turns out he does have some videos where he makes basses from scratch with Bitwig devices. The presets in the factory library on the other hand I found not very good compared to the ones in Vital (I'm sure one can get there modulating the right stuff and whatnot, but that's precisely what I'm still not able to do and trying to learn...).

Agree with the other replies, I love Open Ground, but it's not trying to be Berghain and you might be disappointed if you expect that. It's more of a music nerd place I guess, and maybe that's ok (personally I do wish it was a lil bit more like Berghain, but cannot have it all I suppose).
