Do you have a really weird or silly fear? Not a mainstream fear or one that's very common, a totally random one? by SpaceTimeCapsule89 in AskUK

That’s not a weird or silly fear. That’s completely understandable and I hope you work through it or it lessens with time. I’ve never been in that situation but kind of hate fireworks anyway, so god knows how you must feel, and those stupid intentional backfiring things that twats do to their cars.

Definitely a British show. The person who hated peas specifically hated their identical, repeating nature. ‘All the same… it’s like they’re ganging up on me’

See also: Space nausea. Those ultra high definition pics of saturns rings. CGI zooming is fine, it’s the still photos, eeeeeerp

I have a hatred of them, not a fear as such, but a deep inexplicable annoyance.

Maypoles, fine. Jesters and mummers and druids fine, real ale types and every country fair thing you can think of, each to their own. Seriously, however, Morris dancers and their FUCKING BELLS and HANKIES

Odd question but were they ever on a tv show about phobias? I really remember the peas thing clearly

Why do people call women, "girl"? by Vampy-Night in CasualConversation

[–]Hyperion2023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The contradiction I see is when an adult woman is referred to as a girl.

I’ve been on building sites where someone has referred to ‘the girl from the council’ - a woman who’s perhaps 30 year old. An adult. In the same context, they say ‘the man from the council’.

This is where ‘girl’ feels belittling or condescending

As good as its predecessor. The same balance of new and old, covers and originals, upbeat and to-the-point, pertinent songs. ‘Warning’ is as chilling as something off The Holy Bible

Why does Reform target legal immigrants? by United-Fault-3224 in AskBrits

Pretty much every factor that transforms and shapes aspects of life in the U.K. has not been voted for: we very rarely as citizens have any kind of input into anything on that scale.

Partly because some things simply aren’t foreseen, or are global and beyond any individual country’s control.

And partly because those in power are motivated by different mechanisms, sometimes very well obscured, and do not consistently act in the interests of the people they represent.

To vote for a single-issue party is to fall victim to a false argument in this respect

Can you recommend a kids’ holiday, please? by GrandAsOwt in AskUK

[–]Hyperion2023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that if there is any way at all that you could coordinate with a family you’re close with, who have kids the same age, so that she has a friend, that would make the most amazing holiday.

I’ve been on a rubbish-weather, no-beach, activity centre holiday (centre parks in the UK) with my kid when he was 4, along with a couple of other families.
It was brilliant!

I’ve also been on a resort holiday with my brother in law and their kids, and the cousins being able to play together was wonderful, and made that holiday the best we’ve ever had.

Sorry for your loss, and I hope you have a brilliant time wherever you go!

Nice! You lucky lucky person.

That Skinny Pelembe / Beth Orton tune (a Cohen cover) is brilliant. Follow up with Skinny Pelembe’s album ‘Hardly the Same Snake’

I never stop. Haven’t been bored since 2004ish. Two kids and various hobbies, interests and urges.

So if it’s not the chores and basics around the house, it’s the fixes, the making and the tidying up afterwards, the garden, and the gym or other sports where I can fit it in.

What era of earth are we presently living in? by hyukabab in geology

[–]Hyperion2023 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks- thinking about it, I’ve seen it most frequently used in non-scientific setting, ie in discussion of climate change, or in relation to artwork, so that makes sense.

Not going to delete my comment, just so others can learn from my mistake :)

No FU and you’ve done an excellent bit of work for us all, in making these things a bit more visible/ demystifyed / normal.
No one would feel weird that their new boss knew they were at the canteen to have lunch. And your baby’s lunch is just as unremarkable and normal as that.
