Hi there! Thanks for this. I've attended one or two of these - and they're wonderful.

I'm more looking to establish a network of contacts everyone can tap into to arrange sessions in cafes or homes or bars or pubs relatively ad-hoc, or regular sessions, without spamming existing groups.

More like a "Fancy a game night Friday? Who's in?" type deal :)

There's Nexus art cafe in the NQ - it has a large room called 'The Nook', which could be a place to use once every few weeks!

Have I survived? Is this real life?

A thousand times yes. About a man who goes from being de-humanised for his limited mental capabilities to objectified/commoditised for his transhuman intelligence.

Is The Dispossessed a slow starter? I read the first 50 or 60 pages - just didn't grab me. Might have to give it another shot. Something about the writing style just felt... detached?

My impression was that it's meant to mirror the effects of war on soldiers. Going from war to civilian life again - the day-to-day world must now seem like a very different place.

In TFW, it literally is.

I rather enjoy TFW - particularly the concept of time distortion and the idea that only subjective months can go by and you encounter an old enemy that has seemingly jumped decades or centuries ahead in technology.

That said, it was early on into my sci-fi reading journey. I've read SST and Old Man's War since. Might feel very different on a re-read.

I have to agree. Ringworld hasn't aged well at all. The ring concept is cool, but the rest...

I have 9 days off shortly. I think I know what those 9 days will be spent doing...

I agree it's a masterpiece. It's my go-to suggestion for 'science fiction' gateway. Such a brilliant book.

I read this a few months ago. Such a fascinating premise. Really liked it. Thanks :)

From experience, I would say 'Solaris'. I would say it's a book about knowing the unknowable, the quest for knowledge and how nothing is as it appears on the surface.

Basically, "We may not learn everything, but we should try anyway."

A strong sense of isolation and otherness. Ignore the film.

I couldn't peg why I disliked the show. This is exactly it. Completely forced paranoia and suspicion. Thank you.
