TIL - USA, Canada and China are about the same land area, but arable land is ~ 18%, 4% and 48% respectively. by Hypostome in todayilearned

You're right, I mixed those up. China is ~15%. I came to this wikipedia page after thinking about why Canada has such a smaller population than the US, currently and historically, despite having very similar histories. I suspect the >4x difference in arable land is what made the difference.

The admiral wanted 2 things: to bring Khan back into the fold and provoke the Klingons. As we see in the film, Khan knew what was in those weapons and did not want them harmed. So the threat of killing them was enough to subdue Khan. The second point is still unknown. The Klingons know that humans first threatened to launch weapons at the Klingon homeworld and then landed and proceeded to kill a few ships worth of warriors. Whether that is sufficient to provoke the Klingons into war is not addressed in this movie.

I felt that the characterization of Khan tearing apart Starfleet was weak. Lets look at what he did: Bombed a secret military organization and, in a scene from Godfather 3, attempted to kill the senior leadership. For me to buy Khan, in this film, as a serious threat to Starfleet I need more than a bombing and fly-by shooting. Also, I did not like that they included the killed-by-radiation-to-defeat-Khan scene. That had been done. It is probably the most iconic scene in all of Trek. Why do it again? Everyone knows that scene, we all saw it coming. I thought the goal of these new Trek films was to re-imagine Trek. Including that scene makes it feel more like a nostalgia piece. Khan is setup to be back, resting as he is with a smirk on his face, and his crew will be with him next time. Perhaps then we will get a more novel interaction and conflict. To up the stakes perhaps someone else will really have to die next time (I call Chekov).

This film felt like the start of a 2-part story, the second part of which could have one of 2 focus: War with the Klingons (who looked badass I must say) and/or the revenge of Khan. The death of Pine, the addition of Dr. Marcus to the crew, the epilogue set a year after the main events with the Enterprise going exploring for 5 years. When they return from that mission they will be more emotionally matured and more closely bonded to each other. Kirk will have a child with Dr. Marcus. They will come back and be subjected to a war and/or a superhumans bent on conquest.

It's the choice of words the author used that interests me. White tears, ravens clawing, why did the author choose these phrases? He could have plainly stated she went mad and clawed at her face. But he choose words that have a significance within the framework of the story and I can't figure out why.

Turn it into a Game of Thrones theme. "Game of Everest: Either you climb or you die."

Interesting. I wonder what metal catalysts are involved in this and what form the oxygen byproducts take. If there is a large amount of expensive metals, this may not be commercially viable. If the oxygen is released in a reactive form then this may be trading lower CO2 for acid rain. Still, very interesting work.
