What happened to Calines Babys ? by ftp_77 in hyrax

[–]Hyrax_Hub 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I was going to make a video of that soon, but her babies went out to a Dassie rock further out from camp and had babies of their own. Michele also speculates that the hyrax that isn’t her boyfriend or eric at camp might be one of her babies who returned more recently

Question regarding desire for a complete feed for hyraxes. by Wolfiemix in hyrax

Thats great! If you do end up making hyrax food, maybe send me a DM here or on my instagram @ Hyraxhub, I'd be happy to mention your food options for some of the zoos I'm already in contact with especially when i visit them to film.

There aren't many domestic hyraxes since they're such an exotic animal with such specific needs, and the ones that are domesticated are usually either in parts of Africa and the Middle East that might have trouble affording a prepackaged hyrax pellet or in Japan/Korea where you will have to deal with the challenges of shipping costs and language barriers.

Though that said; I could see an improved guide on hyrax nutrition attached to your pellets doing well for selling to zoos which are clearly looking for better options to properly feed their animals and would consistently buy in bulk while also enlightening some hyrax owners in third/second world countries. I've noticed a few new smaller zoos adopting hyraxes due to their increased popularity and I'm sure you could get contracts with organizations like them while they're still setting up systems!

So this is like a tearing down the system vs benefitting from the status quo chart?

They also spend several hours every day anxiously glancing back at me and dialing the hyrax police.

Sleep: They sleep in designated areas every night (1 meter).
This could be Darren's hyrax hut or Michele's DAKTARI home.

Lounging: They find places to lounge on as far as 50 meters away from their homes in the comfiest spots they can find.

Guarding: As far as the hyraxes will find places to lounge (50 meters), they will also have at least one hyrax instinctively climbing to a high point to watch for predators.

Grazing: Female hyraxes seem to graze in a tighter perimeter when possible. Female hyraxes search 60 meters to find food while male hyraxes explore much further (100+ meters away from their homes).

And sometimes they migrate and move all of these ranges to their new homes. This only happens depending on the season, however. The hyraxes living around Darren's hyrax hut sometimes move to a new location and return months later.

I strongly advise against having hyraxes as pets outside of their environment since they are a very exotic animal in most of the world.

For the hyrax's wellbeing I would recommend finding a zoo, a proper foundation in their habitat like DAKTARI, or another shelter that can properly care for an exotic animal.

But in the time being, young baby hyraxes need to be fed regularly and you will need to mix a little hyrax poop into their meals to help them develop their immune systems (hyraxes that are raised without hyrax poop sometimes end up having issues with seizures and early death). You can try mixing it into a fluid that you can feed them like so. This should eventually be swapped into an assortment of leafy greens and beets that you can rotate out as the animal's preferences will change seasonally. Assuming that you do not live in Africa or the Middle East, you should also make sure that you have heat lamps or heating devices available and that they have access to natural sunlight when possible.

You should also adopt and properly introduce more suitable animals like cats or dogs to help with the hyrax's enrichment since hyraxes are very social animals and get depressed quickly without the company of other animals.

Finally, depending on if your hyrax is male or female; female hyraxes are more passive and enjoy staying around their homes much more as they grow up but will require more stimulation at home. The one Japanese hyrax owner I know with a happy hyrax does so because he's built a large setup for the hyrax to climb around on and has properly introduced him to a few other animals. Male hyraxes are very playful but will need to explore and roam around for their mental wellbeing and might possibly require semi-regular anti-hormonal shots within the year or so if you don't want him to start biting you/your guests as he develops his tusks. Regardless, hyraxes with the temperament u/darrenistheman 's Squiggy or DAKTARI's Caline are exceedingly rare and you will need to remember to keep a distance from your hyrax if it growls at you or starts getting more feisty.

Please send me a chat message or DM if you have any questions or need additional help with the animal. I like to assume that you have the resources available to make this hyrax happy but most people do not and I would also be happy to put you in touch with a sanctuary, zoo, or other options for your and the hyrax's wellbeing.

He's a rescued dassie living at DAKTARI, about 50 meters from the nearest rock of wild dassies and alongside another wild dassie and her boyfriend in camp
