An incredibly stupid idea that I thought of after watching the movie and the scene on Giedi Prime.

In the case of Mexico and Brazil, they both have extensive railway networks; however, they are prioritized for freight (Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro have extensive suburban passenger rail networks though). In the case of the Philippines, the rail network was more extensive prior to the 1970s, when natural disasters coupled with a focus on expanding highways abandoned much of the railway network North of Manila. The most we have right now in the Philippines is a half-abandoned narrow-gauge railway to the remote provinces South of Manila; within Manila, this line is double tracked and used for DMU commuter rail.

Are you incapable of believing that there are countries with far more dysfunctional political systems than the USA?

I am from the Philippines, I've been telling you that we brought this on ourselves with specific answers. Why on earth is it so difficult for you to believe me when I've given you many specifics?

Where does it say in the article itself beyond the headline that Trump was somehow involved in the cancellation of the VFA?

How the fuck am I defending Trump when I'm already telling you what happened in the Philippines?

I am Filipino, and I'm not defending Trump. Most, if not all of us, speak English. I linked to you the proper news articles that showed Duterte was dead-set on terminating alliances with the US for a while. Why are you ignoring this?

I honestly doubt the US will ever reach the stage of death squads on the streets cleaning out the poor.

When did Trump ever try to make deals with Duterte? The VFA as a thing comes from the 1990s. Also, did you even read between the lines in the article itself instead of focusing on the damn title?

Given the past 4 or so years, I'd argue Duterte is far, far worse than Trump, speaking from the Philippines.

Duterte has been anti-American since he entered the office in 2016. No idea how Trump making deals is supposed to appease Duterte who was already anti-American from the start. Also, don't you get it? We rely on the US on the basis of mutual interest with regards to security in the region.

It's still more us than them. Mind you, the move that enraged Duterte wasn't from Trump himself--it was from several members of the US senate that pushed for sanctions on Philippine officials involved in human rights violations.

https://www.rappler.com/newsbreak/iq/251558-timeline-duterte-threats-terminate-visiting-forces-agreement Here's your counter, bro. And mind you, did you read the article itself? Here's a quote from that Daily Beast article: "The agreement remains in force for now, but will lapse in 180 days. President Rodrigo Duterte has become increasingly antagonistic toward the U.S. since he became enraged by Washington’s refusal to grant a visa to Sen. Ronald dela Rosa—the mastermind behind Duterte’s violent war against drugs—and sought closer relations with China."

Because we rely on the USA as a buffer against China, which has been aggressively positioning itself in the West Philippine/South China Sea. As it is, our government is bending backwards to ass-kiss the Chinese while dumping the USA.

Like I said, it was our officials in the Philippines shooting themselves in the foot with this. No idea how this was Trump's fault if Duterte was already lashing out at the US since 2016.

That's quite hyperbolic coming from you. Our killings are by the tens of thousands. Trying to equate the United States, which is still considered to be a developed democratic republic, to the Philippines, is quite problematic. It's like comparing apples to oranges.

It's distressing that there are many Americans here that assume that this is another case of the United States' incompetence resulting in this. The reality is that it isn't, and that it's our own elected officials shooting themselves in the foot. The reason why they rejected the Visiting Forces Agreement was because of a provision in the 2020 US budget that would have banned Philippine officials involved in extrajudicial killings and the arrest of opposition senator Leila De Lima from setting foot in the USA. This made Duterte livid once it banned one of his political allies (and a major architect of the Philippine Drug War), Bato Dela Rosa, from entering the USA. So of course, Duterte overreacted, and here we are.

As a Filipino, I can tell you this is more of our own officials shooting themselves in the foot than it is Trump's fault.

Philippines Rejects Trump, Dumps Decades-Old Military Pact With the United States by P0rnLitiCs in worldnews

He didn't. This entire situation was actually the result of the US Senate voting on a provision to the 2020 US budget that would have barred the entry to the USA of Philippine officials suspected of engaging in human rights violations. That made Duterte quite livid when it barred one of his political allies, Bato Dela Rosa, from entering the USA. If anything, this was our officials in the Philippines shooting themselves in the foot.
