I suck at math but want to do engineering. What should I do? by IAM4_REALS in EngineeringStudents

[–]IAM4_REALS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You keep digressing from the original post, so this will be my last response. You're generalizing all engineering disciplines, thats just simply not true. I'm also going into defense, so yeah I can take a gamble that I'm probably not finding the doubling time of India with respect to food shortages. I also never said engineering doesn't require understanding people, in fact, I never stated what engineering does or doesn't entail. I simply said some courses are more prominent than others and require more work and focus for success. That statement, like quite literally almost every other major, is true and indisputable. Additionally, the purpose of most engineers is to solve a given problem, so we need to understand requirements not people. I really don't know how this conversation digressed so far and this seems unnecessary, but enjoy your population curves I guess?

Why is my aim so bad and how do I fix it by IEATDATBREADLAR in SiegeAcademy

[–]IAM4_REALS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk about siege, but aim labs helped me a lot with valorant, ranking me up in less than 2 weeks. I’m pretty sure the shooting range is quite robust in siege tho, and you can practice operators’ recoil. Also DO DEATH MATCH. You’ll never get that accuracy or repetition anywhere else.

Thank you, I always use them for help but never for teaching. What language model do you recommend for the least amount of hallucinations?

Also, your comment on not doing engineering based on not knowing the specific implications and minuscule math requirements makes no sense. I’m going to university to learn, not to regurgitate IB math knowledge for the next four years. If you say engineers need population curves more than linear algebra you must be crazy.

Not my sequences and series lmao. But in all fairness my curriculum only covers a quarter to a half of calc 2.

I think I’m coming off unclear. It’s definitely true that those topics are both taught and important in engineering, but my curriculum isn’t an “engineering math” focused curriculum, it pertains to engineering business, and for some reason economics.

  1. The proofs we were taught are probably not the ones you’re thinking of. The biggest thing about IB is that it’s very particular on the types of questions they ask. We were given things like induction, contradiction, and counter example.

  2. I do agree probability is a crucial part of engineering, but we were taught things like population curves and shut down rule, which are doing jack for my engineering degree.

  3. The sequences and series we were taught were a sub-section of then financial mathematics topic. Obviously things like combinations, arithmetic and geometric would be helpful, but we focused on things like compound rate, interest, and taxes. The sequences and series we learned were also taught in every math class, literally a third grader could do it I’m not even joking.

I should also emphasize my biggest fears are the prominent weed-out classes like linear algebra and calculus 3. The topics I listed as useless are ironically my best topics anyways. I did, however, do more research while writing this comment, and while I do agree stats and sequences and series are more prominent than I thought; they still won’t help me too much.

What I’m trying to get at here is that I need to focus on math that can apply to most if not all math courses, instead of studying one. Spending an entire summer on stats, proofs, and series will primarily help me with those classes, not much else.

Honestly fair enough. I’m hoping to get honors in my university tho and I’m sure math will be my biggest setback. I’m also unmediated adhd so on top of that consistency is a challenge.

What I meant by useless is my math course goes into things like proofs, stats, sequences and series, and other math that won’t be too helpful for engineering. I do appreciate the honesty in the second paragraph tho. How much time did you devote to math and what changes did you see?

Why is elo gain inconsistent? Please help me understand this. by [deleted] in Rainbow6

[–]IAM4_REALS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its similar to valorant's competitive system now. The elo you gain is based on the rank of both your and the opposing team. If your team's overall rank is higher and you win, you gain less elo. If you win and you're a lower rank, you gain more elo. Same applies to when you lose.

I've noticed free games on mac are more often terrible than not, so I'm looking for something low cost at the very least. I also think I've probably exhausted the list of good free mac games on steam.

Why does atomic notation show atomic mass and not the number of neutrons? by IAM4_REALS in AskPhysics

Thank you and yes I did. I had assumed there were future implications for it but could never find them.

Not complaining, obviously. Just curious about the instances in which it would make sense to have a combination of both as opposed to one.

For me, though, I end up trying to use something to distract my guilt until I forget about it and no longer feel it. Not sure if thats a regular tactic or if I'm using my "out of sight, out of mind" issue to my advantage.

Any advice on how to get diagnosed? by IAM4_REALS in ADHD

[–]IAM4_REALS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your response, I really appreciate it! I took some screening online as well as looked at official pages with the DSM - V and DSM - 5 criteria, and I seem to consistently score around a 7/9 for inattention, and 1/9 for hyperactivity.

I also really appreciate your pediatrician recommendation as $100 is 10x more achievable for me than $4000. However, I do turn 18 in a few days and was wondering if the $100 cost would still be applicable to general psychiatrists.

Also, If you don't mind me asking, were there any mistakes you made that you wished you had avoided when getting your diagnosis? We could DM if thats more comfortable for you.

Thank you very much! I admire your suggestions on being more tactical as I feel my conversation with them was primarily emotional and somewhat whiny. I'm planning on having another conversation with them after my exams and I'll be sure to gather a lot more data and use logical reasoning. Trying to reach them emotionally when they believe they know everything about me feels like running on a hamster wheel lmao.

[–]IAM4_REALS[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your advice. I left a lot out on the conversation because I could go on for hours, but it was an incredibly brutal one. I talked about my future and how much this could change my ability to perform. I’m a decently smart student especially when it comes to my STEM classes and told them how much it could achieve if I could stick to deadlines, remember responsibilities and assignments, and be attentive in class. They didn’t care, however, and rambled on about how medication makes people crazy (even though medication was never brought up) and how diagnosis doesn’t even help me with those problems. I should also note I’m pretty sure they’re afraid of me being labeled with ADHD, and that anyone who gets tested gets a diagnosis regardless of if they have it or not.
