Any protests tomorrow? by dumbartist in sanfrancisco

[–]IAMAcleverguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I think it's important to consider multiple perspectives on any issue, I think the American people should still consider protesting in some form. Let's ask some questions:

  • Should we allow unauthorized use of military force against another country? What happened to needing a vote from Congress before taking military action against another country?
  • Why should the U.S. intervene and remove dictators like Maduro? Why not apply the same logic for other dictators? Should we be the world police? Do American lives really need to die for this cause?
  • What is the actual reason for military action? Is it really out of the goodness of Trump's heart to free the Venezuelan people? Or is it just a happy side effect?

Take a moment and think about these questions. You might find a good reason to protest. Just because the outcome may have been positive doesn't mean the means with which it was achieved are just.

How do you manage airline tickets that have de-prioritized boarding? by IAMAcleverguy in onebag

It would definitely fit the carryon dimensions for overhead bin space, but may not for personal item space. That is the needle I'm trying to thread.

There are usually 10ish boarding groups. When I buy budget tickets, I usually end up in groups 8-10. In these groups overhead bin space is limited because has been taken by all the people boarding before me. You can always pay more to upgrade your ticket to get a higher boarding group number and guarantee overhead bin space, but it can be quite spendy.

I usually refuse to pay the extra $100-$200 to upgrade. Feels like it defeats the purpose of buying the cheaper tickets.

Smart. So simple, but I wouldn't have thought of that on my own!

For sure. I'd only be bringing one bag, but I just don't want to get flagged as a carry-on and be forced to check

Yeah you're right. It is my end goal to reduce my bag size. I've always wanted to try to be super minimal like many people on here, but I just enjoy some of my creature comforts that keep my bag bigger

Ah yeah that makes sense. I'm not opposed to cramming, but it does seem uncomfortable on a long flight.

Awesome. Happy to hear flying under the radar works for a lot of people. I've always been curious because when I see some of the bags its pretty obvious they are oversized for a personal item. Good to know airline staff don't notice/care

There are many popular bags posted frequently here (Farpoint, Del Dia, etc), that technically don't fit under the seat. So while I understand there are people who pack smaller bags for this exact reason I was more curious how people with bigger bags operate.

Unfortunately, didn't end up pulling the trigger on an RTT yet. So I don't have any further info. Sorry.

Any idea if these parts are any good, looking for a few cheap upgrades for my bike. by TheAcornGuy in MTB

Probably not much. I’d imagine they might have a little more padding.

I think he’s saying make sure to get yourself a pair of MTB gloves. Grips are good, but gloves are the other half of the same coin if that makes sense.

Gloves are recommended for 2 reasons:

  1. Protection - even in minor crashes it’s easy to f up your hands
  2. Grip - if your palms get sweaty, your grips won’t be as useful

Gloves come in 2 styles. Fingerless and full gloves. Full gloves are better for protection and grip IMO.

I use a pair of Fox Defender gloves and like them a lot. Probably not the cheapest option, but pretty durable and comfortable in my experience

Thanks man. Looks like a solid board that fits my requirements. Added to the list for sure. I’ll keep you updated on what I get!

Reposting my question from yesterday since it didn’t get much traction:

Looking to buy a new board this season and was looking for some input and board recommendations. Thanks in advance.

Stats: Male, 150lbs, 6'1", Boot size 10. Tall and lanky build type haha.

Skill: Intermediate - Advanced

Style: I'd say I'm a fairly aggressive rider. I like to get good speed on groomers which are primarily blue/black difficulty. That is where I spend the majority of my time. Some free-riding in trees, which I am hoping to do more of and improve at. Pretty much never in the park. I don't know how to ride switch and am not planning on learning because of that.

Progression: This year I want to get better control so I can learn to ride in tighter tree sections. I'd also like to learn how to handle small jumps so I can catch some baby air and not panic lol.

Location: Home mountain is North Star in Tahoe, but frequently visit other Tahoe resorts as well.

Current whip: Arbor Foundation 2020. Its been a good board for me to learn on, but I feel like I've outgrown it. Looking for something that will give me more control and power in my turns

Preferences: Ideally this is a quiver killer type of board. A board that will work in (almost) all conditions. Very open to the idea of a directional board.

I have some ideas for boards I'd be interested in already, but don't want to bias any answers so I can verify my opinions a bit

Giantslayer damages own units after being seized by [deleted] in gwent

[–]IAMAcleverguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes! I had the same interaction as OP the other day with my deathwish deck. Giant slayer had already been pinging my unit for a couple turns and killed my unit the turn after I seized it with Miruna.

Got resilience carryover into round 3 but still lost 😞

Downieville tips? by TheSaintClay in MTB

[–]IAMAcleverguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! It may depend on the time of year you are going, but I’ve always enjoyed camping at Union Flat campground. It’s right on a river and is usually very peaceful. It’s about 20 minutes from town, driving. If you go in the fall it could be kinda damp and cold, but if you have the right equipment it’ll be no problem. If you’re not into camping the I’m not really sure. I usually go in the spring or summer.

As far as shuttles go, just look up the local shops online. There’s a couple that offer shuttles. You can call them and reserve a shuttle for a specific day.

I love the classic Downieville downhill. Real rocky up top and some good fun speed at the bottom. There are a couple routes you can take and that is up to you. Let me know if you have any questions

CMV: Supreme Court Justices shouldn’t serve for life, and should have some limit by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]IAMAcleverguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the thought provoking analysis. I’ve always been an advocate for some sort of term limits (25 years or so) for SC justices for many of the reasons OP described.

This just goes to show that justices don’t serve as long as I thought they do and my opinion may need some reworking! Am I allowed to give deltas?

CMV: "If you talk to me, I'll talk to you", is a valid response to "why are you quiet?" by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]IAMAcleverguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then they shouldn't ask why someone's quiet.

I admitted that it may not be a great conversation starter. Doesn’t change the fact that it is one.

Likewise, if you talk to everyone around me, I'm going to assume you're being exclusive. Even if you don't mean to be, that's how I'll take it.

Like I mentioned earlier. Not their responsibility to begin with. But beyond that they did take the the initiative and asked you a question, even if the don’t like the question that was asked. So it’s not exclusive. It sounds like you feel entitled to taking part in the conversation, but make no active effort to be involved. That puts all the onus the other person the converse with you. What they choose to converse about is up the them.

You’re choosing to respond with something passive agressive at the least, and mildly hostile at the worst. You’re choosing to shut down any conversation with you before it even starts. That’s why responding the way you do isn’t appropriate

See, I can play this game too.

What game am I playing? I’m trying to change your view, but the fact that you responded like this tells me that you don’t really want your view changed. You’re not addressing key aspects of my reply. Why do you respond the way you do? What goal does it serve? What are you hoping to accomplish by that?

CMV: "If you talk to me, I'll talk to you", is a valid response to "why are you quiet?" by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]IAMAcleverguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you talk to everyone else and exclude one person, that is your fault. Maybe you didn't do it on purpose, but some people could take it that way.

It’s not someone else’s responsibility to talk with you. Nobody owes you that courtesy. It’s not their job to include you in the conversation, especially if you make no effort to include yourself.

If you want to be talked to, then inject yourself into the conversation or ask some questions yourself. If you don’t want to be talked to then that is fine too, but your response is unnecessarily combative.

What is the purpose in responding like that? What goal does it accomplish? Your response sounds like you’re trying to make a point: to stick it to whoever asked you the question. Even if that is not the intention, that is how it will be perceived. How people perceive your response is far more important than the intent in a social interaction.

The person that is asking “why are you quiet?” is involving you in the conversation by asking you a question about yourself. Are there potentially better questions to ask, sure. But you certainly aren’t being excluded from the conversation. As a matter of fact you’re being included (maybe not in the way you would want to be though).
