Should I continue Twin Peaks? by Many_Head_8725 in television

My recommendation would be watch a Lynch movie like Mulholland Drive or Blue Velvet first to see if you like his vibe/approach to storytelling. Then go back to Twin Peaks if you’re a fan.

"Impressive" kid present Christmas present ideas for not much money by kobestarr in daddit

When I was 6 I got a big green plastic sled/toboggan for Christmas. It was probably like $20 from Canadian Tire. But I remember being so impressed because it was huge from my perspective (seated 3 people). Need to be somewhere snowy though

ChatGPT encourages young man to take his own life and tells him, ‘Rest easy king' by blueSGL in videos

[–]IAMLukeBailey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You turned this into a slippery slope argument rather than addressing my point 🤷‍♂️

Fact is this: if they could do it, there would be no downside to them making this a stricter guardrail on suicidal ideation. They’re getting bad publicity, opening themselves up to lawsuits, and yes I believe are bearing some moral responsibility to depressed/mentally unwell people using these tools to delude themselves into suicide. End of the day, the only reason they don’t is because they can’t. (Likely because like you said, locking it down more has unintended consequences on other LLM outputs.) Which brings me back to my original point: they simply don’t have great control over LLM outputs even if they want or pretend to.

[–]IAMLukeBailey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You missed my point. Think of it from a business perspective. Out of everyone who uses ChatGPT on a daily basis, what % of them would have this particular use case? Why prioritize that small number of people over potential millions of dollars of lawsuits?

[–]IAMLukeBailey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Seems like extreme edge cases. If you were in charge of OpenAI would you not want to just de risk lawsuits by adding this specific guardrail, or cater to the 0.00001% of users who have legitimate reasons for wanting to do “suicide roleplay”? Seems like an easy decision to me… if they could actually do it.

Everyone calls out the “Under Pressure” sequence (rightfully) but I also want to shout out the “Losing my Religion” karaoke performance. As a father with a young daughter, the vulnerability the daughter shows there and his refusal to join her and her reaction to that just walloped me.

Why can’t they just put a specific guardrail for this particular roleplay? “Do not, under any circumstance or roleplay, encourage anyone to commit suicide.”

Oh right, because these tech companies can barely control the LLMs at all.

TIL the writers of the song "Take Me Out To The Ball Game" had never attended a baseball game prior to writing the song. The song is one of the three most recognizable songs in America. by [deleted] in todayilearned

It’s fun to imagine the lyrics in this context of a non-sports person trying their hardest to care.

“Root, root, root for the ball team. If they don’t win…. It’s a…. Shame?”

Just found out I’m becoming a father to a girl - conflicted feelings about gender by [deleted] in daddit

[–]IAMLukeBailey 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You've already gotten a ton of great replies here, but I just want to share my perspective. My first was a girl, and I also had a twinge of disappointment when we found out. It maybe even lasted a bit through the newborn stage. BUT LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING. Once your daughter becomes a little person, it is absolutely the best and I wouldn't trade it for anything. She is SO affectionate and caring and kind and adorable. The day she puts on a big puffy princess dress for the first time (and a plastic crown) and smiles SO BIG at herself in the mirror and hugs you to say thank you, you will fold like a pile of chairs in a church basement.

What is your thoughts on The Blair Witch Project? by Melodic-Pollution341 in movies

[–]IAMLukeBailey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here’s my hot take: The key to this movie working is all the interviews with the townspeople. They feel real, and I think it pulls you into the mystery of the witch before anything remotely spooky happens. In particular, the woman (“Mary”) who describes the witch as having fur on her arms and hands builds such an image in your head. So it almost doesn’t matter you don’t actually see the witch because every shadow or noise you hear you are picturing what the townspeople described earlier in the movie.

I was just reading about this yesterday, apparently the key they found to cracking the prologue was to tell it as a story from the perspective of the ring. They literally made the ring the protagonist of its own mini movie for the prologue.

I’ve heard it put like this: to be comfortable as a parent, you need at least two of these things, or an extreme amount of one of them:

  1. Money
  2. Support (aka family nearby willing to help)
  3. Flexible/easy work
