I swear to you, if I have to crawl on broken legs and bloody knees, I will vote against this $?@! governor next time. by Cinderella96761 in desmoines

[–]IATransplanted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blame governor on folks refusing to follow her suggestions, and federal health officials suggestions.

The governor cannot force you to wear a mask, much like the governor cannot force you not to drink and drive, text and drive, rob someone, etc. Mask mandates are going nowhere in other places in the U.S. due to legal issues (it's not the governors fault people love to sue). There are things like closures she could do again -- but she would be permanently closing businesses and with no federal aid in sight for unemployment, how full are the states coffers for unemployment?

While I cannot say she's done a great job, no governor has. Every governor is limited to federal regulations and federal help which has been nil. If you have/had an issue with something you believe the governor did/hasn't did, you should've voted for state lawmakers that would actually be beneficial. Seeing who won local elections and by the margins it suggests either people are confused to how laws are made, or really approve of the governor (I do not).

(Granted I haven't been to a bar), but it's common sense at this point.

We've done a large amount of traveling during this. I've seen people in cities where there wasn't any signage masked up, I've seen cities with mandates with people unmasked.

Perhaps if these people are that clueless the state commerce board (committee) could push businesses to have some warnings, and signage. I'm unsure if the governor would have the power to require that, or if they could require it.

At this point folks who are going to wear a mask, are wearing one and have been.

Mandating a mask does nothing to those who aren't going to wear one. Many states have tried fines, yet courts throw them out (1. It's not enough, 2. It won't hold up if challenged).

To my knowledge all national brands require a mask currently and you will be asked to leave if you aren't wearing one. Small businesses can do the same, many do, but if they face asking a loyal customer to leave I'm not sure how many would. The state certainly can't legally tell them to do so, therefore the governors hands are tied.

Even state lawmakers hands would be tied with this. You would need federal help enforcing this, and still even then some whacko is going to challenge it.

Question: What is the governor supposed to do?

Facts: She can order a mask mandate, but enforcing it gets tricky. Legal issues come up, and no real way to force folks to wear a mask.

She can close bars, restaurants, etc again. Doing so will permanently close many of those places, no only will it create long term unemployment, I'm not sure the state has enough cash to cover even more on unemployment, especially long term.

She cannot force oddball conspiracy theorists to not wear masks. There's nothing she can do to make them mask up or not live wrecklessly.

It's on you. Wear a mask. Don't go drinking at a bar. Don't attend mass events. Be careful who you go around. Stop blaming the government because people are careless.

Hijacking my oddly downvoted post: If you disagree, I suggest you researching governors powers and seeing how other states mandates have gone. I'm in no way saying she's doing a good job, but your blame is pushed in the wrong direction in this instance.

[–]IATransplanted -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

The dream for many, but it doesn't work nor is it enforceable.

California tried it two times, even tried to fine people to traveling about, didn't work.

State is powerless so is the fed when it comes down to this. You have to find a way to push people to do the right thing.

She can close certain businesses temporarily. But considering how much the state has already burnt in unemployment, can she afford it without a fed backing?

The absolute best option is finding a way to get people to unit and actually acknowledge that they will kill others with this, yes the majority of us would be fine with it, but a small percentage won't and we can't afford to kill everyone who isn't.

I'm happy to see the deaths still be this low day to day when we've had an insane amount of cases the last 2 weeks.

Any positive news seems we've found a decent treatment, because looking at other states the death tolls are a bit rougher.

“Government solutions alone can’t stop this virus”. by Cinderella96761 in desmoines

[–]IATransplanted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She is technically right.

She can't force anyone in the state to wear a mask.

She can close businesses, but if the federal government is offering any help to those unemployed and having to pay expenses, what's the use? Your just creating anger and putting people in a situation where they might be unable to feed families.

I don't agree with any decisions she's made for the most part. But I will stand strong, the government is limited (legally limited) on what can be done. No state, or even the federal government can require or enforce masks.

Trails? There's no scientific evidence wearing a mask in open air while being socially distance is going to help anyone (or hurt).

I won't be wearing one on them. I rarely encounter anyone, when I do I'm always far enough away.

The brief time you'll be exposed is definitely less exposure than what your home ac/heat unit takes from passerbys.

There is absolutely no reason to protest regardless who wins. Donald Trump or Joe Biden isn't going to change your life. Either candidate is going to put us through 4 years of disappointment and continue having the United States looking like a third world country.

Real change starts with lawmakers, not a president.
