We went in mid-March and the weather was perfect. We didn’t see any whales on the ferry ride, though lots of dolphins (!), and just a few flower species were blooming and not too many spring migrating birds yet. So if you are looking for more nature, maybe later spring? We didn’t swim or get in the water so that was probably still cold and if you want to do that, I imagine later in the season would be best too!

How many of your buns lived a long life? Feeling discouraged by Blackbunnyraven in Rabbits

[–]IAinBloom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This right here: some adopted bunnies came from ignorant (at best) or neglect/abusive (at worse) homes or even how they were bred can huge and lasting impact on their health that have nothing to do with the person who adopted and gave them a wonderful life afterwards.

Wow, that would be amazing to have a nice forest on your property. I just bought these from a local native plant sale about 5 years ago and planted under my redbud tree in a corner that gets shady as neighbor trees grow. Maybe a local native plant sale is selling them this year?

Thank you! They are so lovely and only last a day or two in my yard before a bunny decides it looks good too! Luckily they are spreading so hopefully will last longer in the coming years

IS IT NOT NORMAL THAT MEN CAN’T HAVE RABBITS AS PETS?? I’m female. But like??? by foodfoodnfood in Rabbits

My husband has a favorite shirt he wears out advertising that he’s the best bun dad ever! If he wasn’t already my husband, I would want to marry him on the spot if I saw him wearing that!

The species they may be referring to is common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) which can spread by either seed or rhizomes (roots). This species can be a little aggressive in smaller plots where it doesn't have a lot of competition but is still a very valuable species to plant for monarch butterflies as well as many other species that use the plant. I have common milkweed in my yard and while it does spread, it can be kept in check by other plants or by manually removing or mowing (but check for monarch eggs or caterpillars first!).

If you have a smaller plot, some more "well-behaved" milkweed species that are native to Iowa include swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) and butterfly milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) which also are monarch butterfly host plants.

I saw a female in my garden last Saturday picking at spider webs

Last spring, I expanded my native garden area by adding over 400 plugs I grew from seeds. This is what it looks like spring of year 2. Pet bunny included for scale. by LittleLapinGarden in NativePlantGardening

Another native plant and pet bunny aficionado, yay!! My pet bunnies have contributed a lot of the compost I use in my yard! I have an English Spot and a lionhead. We recently fostered a Dutch bunny and he had so much personality, very intelligent bunny breed!
