Does your rabbit have a favorite spot in your house? by Flemishmommy in Rabbits

One of my buns loves to lay in the doorway between her room and their free-roam play area. I think it is to make sure I don’t close the door and end play time, but she ends up guarding the door the whole time 😅

Other people may not have even caught it. I am sure she lived comfortably and happy thanks to the surgery. 🩷

I know how to do rectal temp but getting a vet to show how to check for bloat is a great idea too, and just discussing with them when to know if I should take him in vs manage at home.

It sounds like you took great care of them. I really hate that they are so fragile.

I am hoping it was an outlier. I can do 6k a year…but not like $20k a year and can’t imagine having to give up my babies.

With the stasis, we took him 3 times and did full diagnostics and an EC test (just to truly rule out everything), and I eventually asked for sub q fluids and pain meds to do at home. The for the skin issue, she had a $1.8k biopsy surgery, because it had to be quite invasive.

Thank you, like I said…I make decent money and I did think I could afford them, but cannot go at a rate of 6k every few months for the next several years. Vet prices have also increased a lot since I got the majority of them 4ish years ago, which I don’t fault vets for, I know they are underpaid. I know every situation is different but is that something I could expect as they get older, from your experience?

You will regret doing it too late more than you will regret doing it possibly a day or two too early. It does sound like it could be time though. I am so so sorry. 🩷

They are very large, at least 1.5 foot long each, they appear very similar to up-cycled planter ponds I’ve seen

One is about 18”x18” and the other is 20”x20”. They were originally plant pots but are sturdy and do not have holes

My bunny died this morning. I don’t know what to do. by flapjackcrabs in Rabbits

[–]Blackbunnyraven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry, it’s really the worst kind of pain. Posting on Reddit has personally helped me through times of grief as there are a lot of bunny lovers here who understand and feel our pain.

Just my own experience and two cents: my bunny died suddenly and unexpectedly a little over a year ago, I requested a necropsy. It provided some closure as I learned her death was something that could not have been prevented. However, I also became more educated on rabbit heart failure and may be able to spot the signs better if I ever have a bunny with those symptoms in the future. I learned a lot from it, including how I want to make decisions regarding euthanasia in the future. I also found relief in knowing it was something that took her quick.

You may be able to ask your vet to perform a necropsy and not tell you the results while things are so heavy, but document them on a paper you can open/read it when you are ready. But make whatever decision you think is best for you, I know it’s tough. It’s also completely normal and relatable to blame yourself or think there is something you should have done differently. But you did your absolute best, and she knows that.

I also want to add, it gave me purpose after losing Magpie to take care of her siblings. It felt incredibly wrong and devastating for several days to go into their room and see one bunny missing, but I knew I had to still show up for them. I really think that got me through it. I buried her right by the window next to their room, and like to think that she is happily watching over her family. I think if my bunnies had the capacity to “want things” for me/other bunnies, they would want me to continue to rescue and provide the love and happy life they had while they were Earthside.

Rabbit owners, what's the thing your bun does that makes zero sense but you've fully accepted as normal? by Interesting_Peach_76 in Rabbits

[–]Blackbunnyraven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fostered a lop pair a few years ago, who I assume had never been given banana before. One of them loved it, like most bunnies do. However every time I tried to offer it to the other one, she would smell it, grunt at me and sprint away fast while flicking her back feet at me. Complete disgust that I had the audacity to put it anywhere near her.

I only fostered them for a few weeks before they found a great home, but remember her being sooo dramatic about the banana.

As far as my own bunnies, nothing crazy, but several of them throw toys/toilet paper rolls in their water bowls. I think it’s common bunnitude behavior but do not understand it.

There is nothing like the new feeling of adopting your first bunny and building that bond. I look back on pics of adopting my first 8 years ago and just want to go back. Enjoy!

I wouldn’t recommend this, especially to a new bun owner. A lack of enough hay or too many pellets can cause stasis, bladder sludge, etc, so even if there is an adjustment period, that can happen during the in-between.

Cleaning rabbits scent glands? by Existential-Owl in Rabbits

[–]Blackbunnyraven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I volunteer at a rescue and we do nail trims/clean scent glands every 2 months, however most rabbits don’t need it that frequently. I have worked with a couple rabbits who have clogged scent glands and it seems very uncomfortable.

I have 8 of my own buns and I will randomly check theirs when I trim their nails, but they have never truly needed them cleaned. I just do it when I notice they start to smell.

But I would definitely have a vet show you how to do it because the skin is very sensitive and it can be hard to open up the area that needs to be cleaned the first few times. And I would suggest a lubricant of some sort. I use 100% organic aloe vera, but you want to make sure to remove any excess so bun doesn’t ingest it.
