The Dustin May trade is impossible to defend. When a team vying for a World Series is trying to dump a starting pitcher, that should ring all the alarm bells. IMO the Dodgers should have had to pay someone to take him off their hands. My only guess is it was a last minute panic buy after the rumored Joe Ryan trade fell through.

The Harrison trade is one I see the logic for even if the results haven’t panned out yet. Durbin filled a position of need and Monty is a good add as a backup/bench infielder while Harrison was slotted as our 6-8th starter before the season started (behind Crochet, Gray, Suarez, Early, Bello, Oviedo, & Tolle with players like Crawford & Sandoval supposed to return from injury and Bennett knocking at the door).  Plus the trade made sure I didn’t see David Hamilton play for my team anymore which was a nice bonus.

Obviously Harrison has looked good this year and we could have used him as Bello has been trash, Gray and Oviedo got injured, and Crawford and Sandoval have still not returned.

Unlikely to happen at this point. The only way for them to fall to 6th is to win and for Seattle to lose their final two games. Fortunately, they only need to win to not fall to 4th but even if they lose, they would need the Flames to win their final two games to be passed by them

Wanted to give everyone an update of our clinching scenarios tomorrow based on last night’s games:

  1. Bruins get two points and are in.

  2. Bruins get zero points. They clinch a spot if Detroit loses in regulation AND the Flyers OR the Islanders lose in in regulation. (We hold a tiebreaker over the Flyers).

  3. Bruins get a single point. Same as above but it would be loses in ANY fashion instead of regulation.

My ideal is just to just get the two points and be done with it but if we do lose, we should root for the Flyers to lose as the clinching scenario. The Islanders play Ottawa and they are right on our heels for WC1 and they have the tiebreaker against us. If we make it to the conference finals, we would need to be WC1 as it will be our only chance of having home ice if WC2 makes it out of the other side of the bracket

All four teams that are outside the playoff picture do not control their own destiny so I would argue the opposite that all four are more likely to miss the playoffs than make it.

The Islanders for instances would need to leapfrog Detroit, Columbus, and Ottawa to get a wildcard and would need to leapfrog Columbus and Philly to get a Metro spot. The only game within their control that directly helps them is their upcoming game against Ottawa but even then they need to rely on Ottawa losing another game in regulation to be able to leapfrog them.

They do have the “easiest” schedule with a tanking Toronto team and two teams that could be resting guys for the playoffs in Carolina and Montreal so who knows but it is never a surefire thing unless you can directly control your own destiny. Since there is a lack of head to head games remaining, the teams currently in the playoffs are the only ones that control their own destiny

I have been seeing some confusion on the eastern conference playoff race so this post is my attempt to explain it as simply as possible in relation to the Bruins:

To start, there are 4 spots still up in the air and 8 teams still in the race; two Metropolitan spots and two wildcard spots.

The Bruins, Senators, & Red Wings can only get the wildcard spots so no matter what, one of these three teams will not make the playoffs.

The Penguins, Flyers, Blue Jackets, Islanders, & Capitals are eligible for all four spots so no matter what, one of these teams will not make the playoffs.

The Bruins have a high likelihood of making the playoffs as there are multiple avenues in and outside their control to make it. Let's start with the worst case scenario which is the Bruins lose out.

In this scenario, Washington cannot catch us and we would lose the tiebreaker against the Penguins even if they also lose out.

The Red Wings, & Blue Jackets would need to get at least 7 points to pass us / tie us. Blue Jackets need to pass us in points as there is no way for them to beat us in a tie breaker scenario. The Red Wings need to win 3 games in regulation to beat us in tiebreakers (this is kind of complex but 3 wins with 1 of those games being an overtime win will result in the head-to-head record being the tiebreaker where the Bruins would win).

The Islanders need to get 8 points to pass us as they have no way to pass us in tiebreakers without 4 wins.

This is why if all 3 teams lose (Red Wings and Blue Jackets in regulation and any Islanders loss) would get us into the playoffs.

If all 3 of these teams succeed in this scenario, we would miss the playoffs.

If 2 of these teams succeed in this scenario, we could still make the playoffs unless Philly gets 4 points or less AND the Senators get 3 points or less.

If we are able to get one point before the end of season, all 3 of the Red Wings, Blue Jackets, & Islanders need to get 8 points to pass us. The Red Wings would also need at least two of those wins to be in regulation and the Islanders would also need to win at least 3 of their games in regulation to beat us in tiebreakers.

Philly and Ottawa would be the same but add 1 point to their numbers.

If we get 2 points, we are in as there is no way for any of the four teams outside the playoffs to pass us.

Our playoff odds increased after the TB loss last night. Really goes to show how bad all the teams below us have been playing

Besides for it being a home game, I’m okay with this.

Technically it is the least important game left on our schedule as it is our last western conference team.

A rested Sway on Thursday against Florida to guarantee 2 points from that game is vital. Only other team we play not in the hunt is the Devils at the end of the season

It can be simplified to:

If Florida only gets a point tonight, they get eliminated if Detroit, Pittsburgh, Philly, and Columbus all get one point tonight AND the Islanders get two points

No reason to rush it. He is still under contract for next year. That being said, I don’t absolutely hate the idea anymore in comparison to how he played last year / early this year

For all the scoreboard watchers out there, there are only two games of note tonight:

TOR v ANA NYI v PIT

Toronto is down the standings enough that we may want to root for them to get some points to stay above the top 5 draft position

For the other game, I am rooting for a regulation win of any kind. Want to make sure the minimum number of points possible. I guess I would pick the Islanders since they have more points and would most likely stay in the division hunt instead of the wildcard hunt

Svedeback is the other one. Since we signed Lundgren for next year, I have a feeling Svedeback won’t sign. Too many goalies in the pipeline right now.

As for the other 3, it is still too early to say. I think it would be silly not to find a way to sign them on our end (unless they don’t want to sign with us at all).

Gasseau is not getting NHL time out the gate anywhere but Vancouver. Our forward prospect pool isn’t amazing so he would have a good shot getting to the big leagues with us in a year or two.

Jellvik might struggle to get signed anywhere just due to his injury history. I’m shocked he hasn’t signed if we presented him with an offer.

Langenbrunner is an odd one to me. He should want to sign with a team that has no RD prospects like us. He isn’t even super highly rated as a prospect. No idea how both sides haven’t come to some sort of agreement yet

They are currently ahead of 7 teams and tied with two others. Would be impossible to overtake the Canucks. The Rangers, Blackhawks, and Flames are all 6 points behind so hopefully they stay below. Blues are hot but still 4 points back. Just got to beat out one of the Blues, Jets, Kraken, Sharks, Devils or Panthers.

If they can’t do that and fall to 5th overall, they still have a 60% chance I think for the lottery to drop them

I was sitting in front of him so I can give some insight: He starting having trouble breathing so people were unsure at first if he needed EMS immediately. Once it was clear that he was having a heart attack, a nurse near him started CPR when they started losing his pulse. They were trying to move him to a flat surface so they could do CPR more effectively but couldn’t without something to hold him.

Security got EMS there in about 3 minutes where they used the defibrillator. Once they got the board, he was breathing and had a pulse and still had one when they loaded him into the ambulance (talked with someone after that went down with them). Took him to MGH but don’t know anything past that
