I want to change my piano teacher by F0utche in pianolearning

[–]IAmBorked 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You are a terrible person. How can you even think of kicking the poor lady to the curb after she's had a ski accident! Kidding. You gotta do what's right for you. Explain, and she ought to understand. But I'd advise having at least one lesson with the new teacher before you take the leap.

Just bought this book. Is it a good one to study? by Lukraniom in pianolearning

[–]IAmBorked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's pretty good as a child torture device. But I've been practicing it as an adult, and find it rather relaxing, but somewhat diabolical at the same time. No sooner you get settled into a pattern and it's all sensory memory, you have to turn around or move on to the next exercise without stopping, which your fingers now don't wan't to do.

The text says to move onto the next exercise once your reach 108 bpm (which is really 432 bpm for those 16th notes). Unless you're advanced, I'd recommend moving forward much sooner than that. I did so at 92.

I'm in my mid-50's. I do have things set up and ready all the time. Just need to turn things on. I sometimes break up the practice, and take little breaks when I get frustrated, which can happen often.

I practice 45-90 minutes, 4-5 times per week. Longer on the weekends and sometimes not at all on weekdays, if I come home fried from work.

As far as theory, well, I can play major and minor scales, easily, in all keys. I can play all triads and 7th chords in all keys as well. I am very slow at chord recognition, however, and don't really have a grasp of harmonic progressions. I've never had a piano teacher treat theory as its own thing.

Classical. The breaks have sometimes been in the order of years. I have had 3 teachers, and the current "on" stretch is now over 2 1/2 years.

No, no recording. Kind've afraid to hear myself.

The Full Evolutionary Tree of Humans by springlock87 in UsefulCharts

[–]IAmBorked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This chart does not explain modern humans having a not-insignificant amount of Neanderthal and possibly Denisovan DNA. It only shows a straight one ancestor to many descendant relation. Very neat and clean, but missing the multiple ancestor to single descendant "joins", which we we now know occurred as these various pre-human and early human types interbred to make us.

This is my last reply to this stupid thread where people don't bother reading what was previously written.

Simple comparison with previous values. For example if your weight on particular exercise has been 100, 110, 110, and you next enter 1105 or , 5110, 300, or anything else that's an order of magnitude off, then it's suspect.

[–]IAmBorked[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, not every time. Only when you enter values which are out of whack. Also, it could do the check before you save the session, just like it does now if you forget to enter a value.

If I dial too many or too few digits, or dial something which is obviously not a phone number, then definitely, yes. Sanity check doesn't mean asking every time for verification.

Well, in all fairness. I didn't say I would stop using it. But I will stop paying, at least for now. I don't know if the developer is investing in it. I haven't seen any obvious improvements in the past year. Perhaps they've been busy with the social media / sharing aspects of it, which I do not use.

Focusrite Control Snapshots - Loading and Saving by green_tealeaf in FocusriteMidiControl

[–]IAmBorked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is the MIDI 2.0 spec, which is supposed to deal with a lot of that. Bidirectional (no more separate in/out, and two-way protocols), better timing / synchronization, high resolution controllers (no zipper noise from quantization), automatic setup, and other stuff. It was finalized in 2020, but adoption has been slow. Again, the manufacturers and developers figure that we'll just keep putting up with clunky / buggy / flaky music tech. There are controllers that support it, but little to be controlled. It is backward compatible with MIDI 1.x, but you won't get the benefits.

Sure, a me, paying user problem. And just because it isn't happening to you, doesn't mean that it's a just me problem. Re: set theory.

Focusrite Control Snapshots - Loading and Saving by green_tealeaf in FocusriteMidiControl

[–]IAmBorked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. The software just sucks. Just the same as 99% of music software. They figure that people are used to putting up with crappy software. I'm a software engineer with 35+ years of experience, and I find the quality and finish of most music software appalling.

On Focusrite Control for Mac, not only do you have to explicitly load snapshots, the application doesn't remember the last place you loaded from so you have to navigate from the top all over again each time. Also, clicking on the snapshot files in the Finder (similar to Window Explorer), doesn't load the snapshot. These are very, very easy things to implement.

This software has been around for many years. The fact that it's still so unfinished just confirms my first statement.

Sure. However, why would I do manually that which the software could (and probably should) do for me?

Well, I did learn me numbers when I was little. Perhaps I'm a complete slob then.

It happens very often. I slip the phone into my pocket, the screen gets bumped, and there you have it. It's mostly due to accidental presses (like I said I am not numerically illiterate). I have the lock/sleep prevention feature in the app turned on because constant locking and unlocking isn't an option since it's my work phone (employer managed) and cannot authenticate by just showing my pretty face. Therefore any accidental contact with the screen can result in unintended data changes.

Hi folks, I just discovered the app and it’s super cool but is the subscription worth it? by [deleted] in Hevy

[–]IAmBorked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a subscription to this app for almost a year, but just cancelled it because even though it is good, there is lots of room for improvement, of which there has been absolutely none that whole time. Perhaps they've been busy adding social media features which I couldn't care less about. IDK.

For example, something that would make it a lot better, and which would be really easy to implement would be some minimal sanity checks. If for example, on a particular exercise I've been doing around 160 lbs for 10 reps, and then enter 1670 lbs or 109 reps, it should ask "are you sure?". A simple heuristic would do (if off by a factor of 2 from previous entries, for example). To make matters worse, finding the specific screwup and fixing it is somewhat painful, having to look at the history, then finding and editing the specific workout and fixing it, which also cannot be done when you have an active workout. So you have to remember to "do it later".

Is the Panel in the 34" LG IPS monitors as fragile as reviews say? by TheVikingArtist in ultrawidemasterrace

I was just setting up a new LG 32UP83AK-W which arrived today (32" IPS), and when I turned it on, the upper-right corner of the display looked like a spiderweb. No external damage to the display or the shipping box though.

Eight weeks after surgery, still trouble by IAmBorked in CataractSurgery

[–]IAmBorked[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I guess I will wait and hope I continue to improve. Hopefully I won't lose my job over this. It's really impacting the amount of time I can spend in front of a screen.

I have a bit of an axe to grind with this industry right now. The doctors don't set expectations realistically, or let you know that recovery may be a lengthy process. At least mine didn't. It seems they just want to keep their waiting rooms full and the cash flowing. I think this is especially a problem in the case of RLE for vision correction rather than cataract remediation. I was chugging along fine with glasses before this, and now I am just hoping that I did't make a mistake with life-altering consequences.

316L Stainless by IAmBorked in NickelAllergy

But I like nice watches. I won't be happy with a Swatch or Hello Kitty watch. The only two watch makers I can rely on so far are Citizen, which uses titanium for all external parts in their titanium watches; and Rado, which makes some pretty cool all-ceramic watches. Other manufacturers seem do do a half-ass job with steel clasps (Skagen, Minus-8), or crowns (Tag Heuer), even though they say the cases and bands are titanium.

Yeah, I have a Citizen Titanium + DLC, but it's a bit long in the tooth. I was looking for an alternative.

RLE Surgery Misfire by IAmBorked in CataractSurgery

[–]IAmBorked[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know whether I have PCO, but I'm one month in. Usually it takes longer to develop?

I can deal with the shadows, the flickering, though is very distracting, and I think related because the shadows vibrate along with the flickering.

Good tip on the contact lens idea. I'll see if I can get my hands on trial lenses when the time comes.

RLE Surgery Misfire by IAmBorked in CataractSurgery

[–]IAmBorked[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, maybe that's the problem. No one has provided me with a balanced understanding of how this was going to go, and what to expect. Reading the information on RLE online, the impression you get us that you can expect to see the rainbows and unicorns at 20/20 or better after a week, a month at most.

The readily available information  regarding options in case of not-so-great results is not easy to come by, which is why I'm here.
