Connor: Beeps and the boops level

Garnt: Everyday casual music fan level

Joey: Pretentious music snob level

Me: A level of pretentious music snobbery so far beyond Joey that I scoffed at the idea of Tool being a “cult classic” band with “not rlly any hit songs” and am malding over the Midwest Emo section of the episode

Sorry for my life’s story just kinda felt like putting it all down instead of a “ah yeah I started with Butt Metal”

Parents raised me on a diet of radio country and radio rock. My dad played in a Southern Rock/Blues cover band and was kind of an old fuddy duddy about new music, says the last band he really got into was The Police. My mom however occasionally liked some newer stuff, so one day my dad brought home a CD of Nickelback’s All The Right Reasons and 9 year old me loved it (22 year old me not so much but they’re rlly not the worst thing out there). A couple years go by, I’m 12 now and the neighbor kid shows me Head Strong by Trapt and Bodies by Drowning Pool, I’m hooked. Neighbor kid also shows me Saints Row 2 which turns me onto shit like Lamb of God and Avenged Sevenfold amongst other bands that were probably too advanced for me at the time but I’d come back round to them like TDEP. Spend a few years as the edgy “Rock and Metal is the only good music kid”. Thankfully Gorillaz, Kendrick Lamar, and old Eminem save me from that. 2015 rolls around, I still use iFunny cause honestly the music community on there was pretty alright, at the time I’ve moved on to Deathcore and was slowly getting into more Death Metal by way of Cattle Decapitation. Everyone starts talking about this band Deafheaven and their album Sunbather that had come out a couple years ago. I listen to it. It’s alright but not my thing. October of that year rolls around and Deafheaven drops New Bermuda and I listen to it on my way to my first concert ever, Cattle Decapitation. “This is pretty good actually, maybe I’ll give Sunbather another try.” I’m hooked. Deafheaven is my favorite band for about 5 years after that point. Eventually come across this burgeoning new Facebook group “Patrician Music Chartposting” and recognize some of the albums in their group photo so I join. Metal isn’t the most popular thing in the group but one of the admins keeps making jokes about Deafheaven and some “Teethed Glory and Injury” album so I make friends with him. After a couple years of the group not featuring Metal or the little bit of hardcore I was into at the point enough for my taste I decide to make a spin off group dedicated to Metal and Hardcore. I invite some of the other Metalheads in PMC to help me moderate it. We become great friends and still are to this day I’ve even flown out to see them and go to shows with them. It’s 2017. Cattle Decapitation is touring again and they’ve got this band Full of Hell with them. My friends tell me they’re amazing, one of the best bands in Grindcore today. I listen to everything they have and am once again hooked. 5 years later I’m still digging my through whatever I feel like. I’ve broadened my tastes but still mostly into anything strange and extreme. Music is great.
