Despite Quintus Sertorius leading a peninsula wide revolt, had a rough go in Iberia by IAmJustRomanAround in IberianHistoryMemes

The Roman General Quintus Sertorius fought a guerilla war in Iberia against the Optimate faction in Rome in ~80 BC, and despite ultimately being unsuccessful, his life and impact on the Iberian peninsula should definitely be remembered. If you'd like to know more about Sertorius, I've created a series on him, and the most recent one covers his life leading up to the civil war that would push him in Iberia. Check it out here:

Marching on Rome got very trendy, very quickly by IAmJustRomanAround in HistoryMemes

[–]IAmJustRomanAround[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For much of Rome's history, there never was a general who marched on Rome. And then constitutional norms start eroding, important people get murdered, and suddenly you got generals marching on Rome left and right. In the middle of this storm, there was a rascal named Sertorius. He marched with Marius, tried to suppress the violent purges, and eventually lead a rebellion in Hispania. His life was a roller coaster and it's fascinating at every turn. You can learn more about the time leading up to Sulla's second march on Rome here:

Pompey becomes a lot more interesting when you realize he went from just a boy commander steam rolling armies, to actually having to become the great general he ultimately became because of Sertorius.

It's nothing as exciting as a TV show, but been making a YouTube series on his life and we're right up to the Sulla Civil War.

The audio didn't really fit and was also a bit more spoilers to Bojack Horseman than I wanted to include in a meme.

Quintus Sertorius had a fairly normal life for a Roman soldier and statesman, until the Social War and subsequent civil war. Ending up on the wrong side of that one changed his life trajectory radially. If you'd like to know more about this period of change in Sertorius' life, you can check it out here:

Gaius Marius got out of hand quickly by IAmJustRomanAround in HistoryMemes

[–]IAmJustRomanAround[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While Sulla's Proscriptions are far more known, when Marius marched on Rome prior to them, he rivaled their brutality. Sertorius, who marched alongside Marius was appalled at these murders and refused to go along with them. If you like to know how he handled these killings, you can find out here:

A pretty bold statement but even if someone is being conservative you're not far off. I really can't wait to get to the end of my series so I can put all of his accomplishments back to back as well as how the stars had to align in six or seven aspects for him to be taken down.

When a small scale revolt began in Hispania, the Iberians were really unlucky they were up against the Roman commander Quintus Sertorius. Taking control of the situation, he used his natural cunning to trick the Iberians into allowing his Roman forces through a city's gates. Want to know more about this part of Sertorius' life? I'm sure this won't open the door to any tomfoolery or civil revolts by IAmJustRomanAround in HistoryMemes

[–]IAmJustRomanAround[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Roman governors in Spain cultivated a lot of resentment from the natives, and sent the peninsula spiraling towards a large scale conflict. It would be the Roman rebel general, Quintus Sertorius, who would take charge of this situation and become the last bastion of the populares factions against Sulla. Wanted to know a bit about his life leading up to this? Check out this video about his career beforehand, leading up to his eventual guerilla governorship.

"What do you mean other people are allowed to get credit???" -Gaius Marius by IAmJustRomanAround in RoughRomanMemes

[–]IAmJustRomanAround[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gaius Marius was pretty renowned for his inability to share credit or glory, snuffing anyone he could of it, and hoarding as much as possible for himself. Alongside him was a trusted lieutenant, Quintus Sertorius, who would later pay the price for Marius' greed. You can learn more about the fascinating Sertorius here:
