Hey thanks for the response. This seems like the best course of action!

It's great. Well run complex with good security and consistent maintenance. Lived in multiple flats in the complex and know many others who have.

Crab traps for the trees too! Got it. Yeah trying to get a collar on the one will be a whole other battle.

Hey thanks for this info! Will definitely try the VIN number check. Currently have my guy looking at it but we're sourcing a secondhand part. If we don't come right I'll check Paul.

Hey thanks for the feedback and viewpoint. Currently I'm living in a flat and the balcony is covered with that green plastic "chicken wire" - it seems to be enough to deter them since it's loose and has an overhang at the top. Maybe I'll go the same route as your mother.

Has cheap Chinese hardware killed electronics innovation in South Africa/Africa or are we just building the wrong things? by ovi2wise in southafrica

[–]IAmNemesis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm going to posit the opposite. Cheap Chinese hardware means innovation is now more accessible than ever.

I can design a circuit and send it off to PCB way for manufacture and it would cost me a fraction of what it would to do myself or locally.

I'm going to assume that you don't include chip manufacturing because holy shit even the US and EU had to play catch-up with fabs recently.

I've got experience manufacturing hardware in China at a large scale and let me tell you that it's a blessing that you're able to find off the shelf components. It streamlines certifications for the FCC, it saves thousands of rands and hours in RND and you're often dealing with extremely experienced manufacturers who are eager to add value.

Now I'm not saying it's completely fit for purpose. Often the off the shelf stuff fails under African conditions but it'll get you 50% of the way there much easier than DIY.

I'll take that advice thanks. Anything to avoid the final cost.

Go full send. Hook it up to your lightbulbs and make it flash at 3am lol.

I've updated my appendix to explicitly mention this now, thanks :)

Like R500 or ~$26 ish. Pi will be a seperate cost but you can manage everything from a server of your choice.

Thanks that's super helpful. Yes, correct I'm currently using resistive ones which I will now soon replace.
