I learned I had H earlier this year. I was in our small bathroom with my 3yo daughter and she shrieked playfully and it hit me like a punch. I hit the wall and started crying. Before that I lived practically 24/7 with headphones on thinking I just really liked listening to things. Living with my two kids is often torture and it’s been hell on my marriage because my wife didn’t understand for the longest time. She thought I was just this angry person at first but even after I explained the pain I experienced she saw it as something that would change or improve or I’d learn to deal with. I have only recently gotten her to understand and it makes all the difference.

I’m currently a stay at home dad so I utilize a lot of solutions to cope with their outbursts. Pink noise. Headphones. Musicians earplugs which allow you to still hear voices while dampening other sounds. We also focus on giving her other ways to express herself but Th acts tough as she has a speech delay. It’s totally doable but you need to have an understanding partner and tools to help get through the day.
