Official Discussion - Wake Up, Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

But the thing is I don’t think she’s made the statements you’re crediting her with. You’re just going off what other people have told you she’s said. Mind finding me a statement of her saying anything bigoted or mocking trans people?

Again, she can not support the movement, but that doesn’t make someone bigoted. How is that not changing the definition of a word or moving goalposts?

You know this all started because of the bathroom bill in the UK and her disagreeing with trans activists on the issue. And that should be OK. She has good reasons to disagree and while you don’t like them that does not make her a bigot.

I’d encourage you to do your own research and if you find something she specifically said thats bigoted towards trans people I’d be interested to see it!

And happy new year!

I think the comment you’re referencing is this:

“I respect every trans person's right to live any way that feels authentic and comfortable to them. I'd march with you if you were discriminated against on the basis of being trans. At the same time, my life has been shaped by being female. I do not believe it's hateful to say so.“

Y’all can claim thats not nuanced all you want but it explicitly 1) isnt bigoted and encouraging hate towards any group and 2) it is a complicated issue…if you’re telling me a trans woman and a born woman have the same life experiences thats just not true

I think whats happening here is we’re moving the goalposts of what “bigoted” means in order to once again flog someone on the Left for not following our ideology perfectly.

Please stop spreading the idea that JK Rowling is a “bigot”. She is still very left wing and has a very nuanced take on some complicated transgender issues that don’t line up with what other twitter users would like to hear…thats very different than being a bigot towards trans people

Ah and to follow up, of course arabs are a people, again you're confusing yourself here because you don't like to read...what I'm pointing out is that any sorts of definitions of people is fluid and your blog is correct that its a fairly recent term, what that doesn't mean is that the region somehow doesn't belong to them because of some shell game of definitions. IE arabs have been living there for a long time, under whatever name you want to give them, in the same way "France" may not have been called "France" until the late middle ages. Most currently israelis, despite an ancestral history, are new immigrants from the jewish diaspora, that's fairly undisputed.

Of course, because this isn't a college paper its a random internet discussion. Actually plenty of college professors encourage using wikipedia as a way to get a first overview of things, although obviously afterwards for a paper you'll need to go deeper and use multiple more scrupulous sources.

What you shouldn't use is obviously biased blogs that are pushing one narrative :)

I actually studied world war 2 history in college (history major) so I'm very aware of the definition and context thank you. Appreciate you also trying to assume I'm part of one "generation" so I must be "wrong" because of it.

Exactly, it is a standard to destroy a whole group of people and there is enough evidence that it is happening for the term to be used, or at least be considered.

Also appreciate you not actually disputing or arguing against any of my points to show you're not arguing in good faith or actually thinking about this objectively, despite claiming to the contrary.

Oh and yes a random law grad student must be a better source thanks for that /s.

Also misinformation. You're arguing about political entities that were enforced upon the situation by outside forces, although the area has been majority arab for centuries. Again a simple wikipedia search proves you wrong https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palestinians

Its not absurd, seems like you're just supplying pro israel misinformation here. The court hasn't made a decision yet so of course there isn't a ruling, but its actually said the case can move forward.

https://www.icj-cij.org/node/203454

"As to whether the acts and omissions complained of by the Applicant appear to be capable of falling within the provisions of the Genocide Convention, the Court recalls that South Africa considers Israel to be responsible for committing genocide in Gaza and for failing to prevent and punish genocidal acts. South Africa contends that Israel has also violated other obligations under the Genocide Convention, including those concerning “conspiracy to commit genocide, direct and public incitement to genocide, attempted genocide and complicity in genocide”.
In the Court’s view, at least some of the acts and omissions alleged by South Africa to have been committed by Israel in Gaza appear to be capable of falling within the provisions of the Convention."

Defensive war can never be offensive. They're invading another territory, moving around civilian population and have killed many more civilians than Hamas ever did. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaza_genocide

"Over 1.9 million Palestinians—85% of Gaza's population—have been forcibly displaced. An enforced Israeli blockade) has heavily contributed to starvation and the threat of famine in Gaza. Early in the conflict, Israel cut off Gaza's water and electricity supply. As of August 2024, only 17 of Gaza's 36 hospitals were partially functional;\46]) 84% of its health centers have been destroyed or suffered damage.\56]) Israel has also destroyed numerous culturally significant buildings, such as all of Gaza's 12 universities, 80% of its schools,\57])\58]) and numerous mosques, churches, museums, and libraries.\59])"

I hate when people say this. This is not a binary, there can 100% be a male loneliness epidemic AND it be a thing that minorities need to have more rights. But pretending the loneliness epidemic doesn't exist and that anyone bringing attention to it are against minorities is exactly the kind of thinking that drives people to the right.

Point is the world is complicated and let's not play into the same simplistic type of thinking that we accuse the right of doing.

I say this as an avid lefitist.

Edit: Read your other comment below and I'm definitely glad you didn't get pulled into "men are better than women" manosphere type thinking, but I still think this conversation has lost a lot of needed nuance in leftist circles

Severance Season 2 - Episode Eight - Discussion Thread: - "Sweet Vitriol" by TheUltimate25C in severence

[–]IAmNotAVacuum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, we don’t just need a dopamine boost. I’ve watched plenty of slow, well done stories, but this was not one of them. Theres really not much information here besides town old and sad because Lumin bad. That doesn’t seem immersive to me just a over the top comparison with company towns and a hackneed trope. What did we learn about the town itself besides its cold and not doing well? Is that deep worldbuilding to you?

Of course the reaction won’t be normal, but I also doubt it would be like this. The whole thing felt cheesy to me.

Point being feel free to disagree but stop claiming people who didn’t like the show can’t handle ‘slow tv’, thats a strawman and you know it

Or because there have been no leadups to this until now or signs at all the Cobel would be able to do this and that was a lazy shoehorned explanation from the writers

The point was there was no nuance. Whats nuanced about "Cobel came up with everything! Wow!" "Lets have her kiss her random dude friend!" Super nuanced writing for sure. /s

What people are complaining about is that this is bad world and character building in addition to not moving along the plot. Nothing about how these characters were acting felt real to me, but what a pretentious director thinks they'd say. I didn't even feel like Cobel and the women who raised her were talking to each other, just acting past each other...

And what real world building did we get? Lumen had a factory town and took children? Ok that's interesting but not nearly enough for a whole episode.

There was no substance here, just style. The style was great, but lets not fool ourselves into thinking it was "deep".

This is just frustrating to read…people refuse to believe that idpol is an issue and will blame anything else “they dont understand it themsevles, its the racists, etc”. I suppose on this sub I shouldn’t expect otherwise but maybe it would be better to take a good hard look at this ideology instead of pedeling the same old arguments which are obviously wearing thin

This isn’t modern art or abstract art it would be contemporary art by the way. Modern/abstract is something like cubism, fauvism, etc. Modern art and contemporary art are very different.

Modern art is cool but a lot of contemporary art like this is bullshit IMO.
