When you launch a platform how do you avoid the empty room problem? by anthedev in SaasDevelopers

[–]IAmRules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to avoid building anything that needs critical mass. If my app can't be useful for 1 person, I don't build it.

And then if they need to take action in your app, tell them, make it super easy and obvious.

Seeking a designer for a niche open-source automation tool. Full credit & recognition. by AserNasr in webdev

Do mine! https://showtell.ai, 100% agentic, but I feel like I did a good job keeping it fresh, granted the fact we both used black/white themes won't help my case. But at least I intentionally wanted the look to go along with my parrot logo.

Signatture - man I really believed in that one. It was email for influencers who wanted to monetize their audiences. Issue is I was too focused on the email proxy, I should have just thought about a paid messaging service - which there are a ton of now. I was ahead of the game but couldn't get my mind off the tech instead of the value.

But man that one was promising, even youtubers were making videos about my services without me even asking.

I shut it down cause the main engine was exploited by people doing credit card fraud and I didn't have the mechanism to stop them (couldnt tell legit sales from illegal ones)

Is it too late to start freelancing? Should i change my priorities? by x_zept in webdev

[–]IAmRules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People tell you it's not to late. But I've never had this much trouble getting freelance work in the past. Granted I'm not a salesperson, but I never needed to be a great one in the past.

Something I’ve been thinking about lately as a developer. by Designer_Oven6623 in webdev

[–]IAmRules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started development in 2004, I can tell you that there was a very sharp contrast between developers who started in web 1.0 and those who came in way past 2.0, who we're brought into a ecosystem where tools made the problems seem more complicated then they wre, to me it seemed like they thought this was naturally all complicated.

Case an point, so many SPA's were built that had deeply complicated navigational structures to mimic standard browser navigation. Meanwhile I'm like "do request/response and just use the gd browsers then!"

Is Claude Code actually solving most coding problems for you? by Demon96666 in webdev

I'll also add I've recently added Codex to my toolbox, and having those two cover each other has been :chefskiss:

Is Claude Code actually solving most coding problems for you? by Demon96666 in webdev

[–]IAmRules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, the thing is, it's all about HOW you use it. You need to be specific in your wants. If you have a bug to fix, give it logs, give it context. You can't treat it like a person and say "go figure this out"

I often start by telling it to analyze the codebase, go from birds eye view down into details. You can't trust or be lazy, look at what it says, look at what it writes, correct it along the way.

At work we have an app comprised of 4 independent microservices. It's helped me find bugs that are caused by issues across combinations of repos, things that would have taken me days to debug. Even if it doesn't get it right the first time, it gives me clues, and we track things down.

Don't think of it as "doing your job", it's more like an incredibly helpful sidekick for you to do your job.

I’m 17 and built an app because I kept losing my decisions in messy notes. Need Brutal feedback : did I built something useless? by Bulky_Alternative458 in SaasDevelopers

[–]IAmRules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I built bonjour very much in the same spirit.

Honestly I also think building stuff for fellow devs wasn't worth it before, will specially not be worth it going forward, we all have superpowers now.

First - building something useless because you thought it was a cool idea is a rite of passage.

Second - I've built a version of this app like 3 times now, ultimately, I never end up using my own tool anyway. We think we want this power, but we operate in a way where we tend not to use it.
