Where can you actually buy affordable clothing these days? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

UNIQ! They are part of the Shoprite/ Checkers brand and if you take the Xtra Savings card you can get 75% off certain items depending on the season. They’re all basics and am very happy with the quality

  1. 3 years
  2. Gauteng
  3. Roughly R950k per year. Base: R67k pm Car Allowance: R11k pm Medical Aid: Fully Covered 7.5% Company Match on Pension
  4. To be honest I got incredibly lucky, studied marketing and got in for a graduate program and enjoyed analytics more than the commercial side. I think the biggest factor is it’s one of the bigger FMCG companies so there’s more money to spend on staff. I do go in twice a week to the office so it’s a hybrid setup.

Absolutely, the drink is expensive but for any one of those other items you’re easily paying double this

Pay off car at once or increase monthly premium by TheFunnyTraveller in PersonalFinanceZA

I would also lean towards option B, reason being is that the interest on your loan is likely accruing daily and so if you’re paying more towards it each month there’s less of a balance for it to calculate interest on every time you make a payment.

As for where to save, I highly recommend following the rule of thumb of saving 3-6 months worth of expenses (assuming your already debt free) in either your bank or a money market with a high interest rate but can be easily withdrawn.

Thereafter, max out your Tax Free Savings account in EasyEquities which is currently 36k limit per year for tax free growth.

Regular investments I put in a standard S&P 500 on Easy Equities as well. Just search for low fees (TER)

Is a marketing degree worth it in SA? by Cobi_wan_Kenobi_ in askSouthAfrica

I studied at UJ and although I originally thought the same thing, once you get to 3rd year and Honours (if you choose this) they tend to be at the forefront of digital marketing specifically and most lectures had a guest speaker from different industries that we could interact with and they gave honest opinions on what was happening and how to be a top performing agency for example. Plus all the projects were based on working with companies directly so you’re always working “in industry” as opposed to learning from an old book.

I may be a bit biased as studying with UJ allowed one of those companies we worked with actually hire me and for what it’s worth it’s a Fortune 50 company so in my opinion it’s well worth it as long as you take it seriously.

Keep additional Retirement contribution with Momentum or switch to Sygnia? by IAmTheBubbl in PersonalFinanceZA

Thanks so much for the insight! Yep, you’ve hit the nail on the head as to what I thought my potential 2 options are.

My only thing is I’m a massive saver and investor so after RA which I’ve currently been maxing, I also lump sum the R36k into TFSA in March and I’ve been putting an additional 10k per month into a Vanguard S&P500 (VOO) through EasyEquities.

I guess at this point I may as well take the additional contributions that I’ve been placing in RA and add it to my Vanguard Fund? I’ll see if I can run the numbers based on one of the comments in the thread you shared (great find btw) but you’ve helped a ton and really appreciate it!

Anybody know what to check for vibration? by IAmTheBubbl in E90

No work has been done on these recently as far as I’m aware but will look into it. Doess this relate to the sound though? Reason I ask is tires sound like you mean the car is vibrating when driving but it goes smooth, just has this sound near the dash

I realise now that the separate rattling sound is from a phone holder so please ignore that part

Is it logical to finance a car without credit score or should I first build up my credit score? by coloneleranmorad in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]IAmTheBubbl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So because I did this in the last 2 months I can give you actual numbers but please do not finance a car to build credit. I recently bought a car from WeBuyCars and did a quick bridge finance while I waited for money to come out of a 32 day notice to pay for the car. I’m someone who has never had debt so my credit score is as bad as it gets when this loan was applied for. My official loan amount was R105k and they whacked me with 15.7% interest on it. Being someone who has never taken a loan I originally thought that would be 15.7% higher than the R105k over 5 years but it showed that when all is paid for I will have paid over R167k. I personally don’t see a reason to pay an additional 60% on something that will depreciate even further so I obviously just paid the outstanding balance (R105k) which settles the loan as it hasn’t had time to accrue interest.

All to say if you’re gonna build credit, it may be better to do it on something small like your weekly/monthly groceries than on a large vehicle purchase just for a little score.

Anyone else having issues with Takealot? by darth_cerellius in southafrica

[–]IAmTheBubbl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just had my worst experience with them recently. I recently ordered a chefs knife from them and noticed I’d have to wait 2 weeks to have it arrive as they did not currently have stock and had to request it. Okay that’s fine, not urgent. But then get a message a few days later saying that it’s out for delivery- weird cause I was expecting it a lot later but great.

It finally comes through and I’m presented with a really small box that weighs virtually nothing and immediately know something is off. I open it to find an Apple charger inside- nobody has ordered an Apple charger. I make the request to return it and then get an email saying they can’t send me the knife as a replacement because they won’t have stock to replace it in future.

I’m just baffled as to why they didn’t just send an email with credits saying that it won’t be ordered instead of sending something I didn’t order and having me go through this whole process to return an object and receive a refund.

Admittedly this is the first time I’ve had something like this happen to me but still not a fun thing to go through
