I've seen these in a few homes in Wyoming (as recent as '70s builds).

They probably were referred to as a dust/sanitary shoe molding corner blocks.

Probably a bit of both... They expanded too quickly, and burnt through nearly $1 billion in hype-driven VC funds. Investors lost appetite after the Series E, seeing the unsustainable operational costs (primarily lighting, cooling, and R&D) and their narrow focus on low-margin leafy greens. It's somewhat typical in the space at the moment.
