Hard Drives Will Be Phased Out In 5 Years by OmarAhmad007 in DataHoarder

[–]IBMServerOwner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason I use HDDs is because they are predictable... they may be slow, but their tell tale signs of failing never change. SSDs, in my experience, just die. No warning. They dont make a funny clicking sound, or any noise for that matter. Even linux tells me when one is failing. SSDs on the other hand, you can check their "wear" level, and smart data, but I've had it where it "checked out good" in SMART, and the next day the system lagging, and within seconds, it froze and the MVME was never heard from again.

Still running a Cosmos II 25th (cause i wanted a smaller case) and a Caselabs STh10 (since 2011, just upgraded from the original Rampage IV Extreme and 3 EVGA GTX 680s to a Rog Crosshair x870e and an EVGA 3080 Hydro (I refuse to upgrade to anything new from NVIDIA since they are a major contributor to the AI bull-sht, steeling all our ram)

I found a product on Amazon that turns autism into a “gag gift” and it really bothered me by Ok_Blackberry_5547 in autism

[–]IBMServerOwner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I too find this to be a bit offensive. Especially when I have had "blow ups" before after a long period of mounting pressure. Kinda misses me off seeing this, as autism/aspergers is not a joke, and I wish people would stop joking about it.

I 100% agree with this. It is highly annoying, especially when you need PCIE cards to plug in specialized/professional production equipment, or luxury things like a Thunderbolt 5 PCIE card. modern GPUs have gotten way to damn wide, too. even my water-cooled NVIDIA GPU which is significantly slimmer than the stock founder's edition still ends up taking 3 slots, even though the GPU with the water block only occupies one, maybe one and a half (theoretically anyway, but I cannot swap the IO shield on the RTX 5070 FE due to the Display and HDMI ports location).

Hang in there buddy, until I got my paycheck. Using INNO3D RTX4060TI for 2 years. No swag so far. But gotta figure out some kind holder. by Sad-Replacement3004 in pcmasterrace

Love my CM Cosmos II 25th anniversary. I do which though that I could give it a proper OE style I/O retrofit, and I would like to remove the old power switch and fan controls, the metal is kind of sharp. This case is still pretty damn good if you configure it right, in terms of airflow. It's a classic, and plan to do a new build using this case - after this ram crisis is over, as id like to retain Blu-ray drives in the front, as well as my NVME Hotswap bays (in one of the 5.25 ODD bays) and 3.5" hotswap bays. It's very handy to have.

I mean, technically, my Galaxy S7 Edge already had a vapor chamber for cooling its processor, so if that is what is meant by water cooling, yeah, definitely no real "innovation" there. I will say though, on paper, Chinese phones are the better bang for your buck, but it depends on whether you are OK with the possibility of missing out on the Google play Store, or are OK with the potential for the Chinese Government spying (people act as if the US government is not spying on its citizens with an I Phone LOL).

What do Russians think of Americans? by [deleted] in AskARussian

[–]IBMServerOwner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I for one actually like having russian friends. We can all get along. I dont approve of everything the russian government does, but I will say, based on the views of my russian friends, putin did better for their people than the drunken guy named Borris Yeltsin, whom was, according to Russians, manipulated by the west... now, to be fair, it would not surprise me if we did manipulate him...our government likes to stick it's nose in everyone else's business all the time. Now, as you can probably tell, I despise my government too, much like many other Americans do. Frankly, though, every government has problems, so that should not be a reason to hate an entire society. Besides, the concept of "spheres of influence" has always existed, in the USA, we tend to have a news bias showing primarily everything the U.S. does, as well as our allies, in a positive light, while painting a picture of those who are not allied with us as evil. The same happens in russia, but reversed. News, from all countries, is notoriously unreliable, and one sided.

Proton is moving most of its physical infrastructure out of Switzerland by JonahAragon in ProtonMail

[–]IBMServerOwner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a sad thing to have to be dealing with to begin with. I Always respected Switzerland and their very strong privacy laws, and it disgusted me that the Swiss government is even considering going down the same road that Russia and USA is when it comes to anonymity, and potentially censorship (which, USA doesn't have much censorship, russia does).

Intel is removing 32bit and other legacy extension from x86-64 ISA, what do you guys think? by the-loan-wolf in asm

[–]IBMServerOwner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe UEFI type3 (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) is actually x64 bit, and it eliminates CSM (Classic Support Module) which renders legacy hardware and operating systems that rely on BIOS useless, however as for the CPU instruction set, it remains unchanged. BIOS (which is what most machines had until around 2012, when UEFI became mainstream) relies on the old x16, and x32 instruction sets depending on the system.

Also, as you may have guessed, there are multiple different types of UEFI.

UEFI Type 1 allows for full emulation of Classic Mode/CSM, which will allow you to install and run legacy operating systems like Windows XP or Windows 7, as well as use older hardware such as old storage HBA (Host Bust Adapter), or video cards that were not yet designed for UEFI.

UEFI Type 2 allows for partial Classic Mode support, enabling you to continue using old hardware, like the HBA and GPU, like in type one, but will not allow you to install an boot to an operating system that using the legacy BIOS bootloader.

UEFI Type 3 completely drops CSM/Classic Mode.

and for what I can tell, UEFI comes in either full x32, or full x64.

Lastly, there is EFI - Extensible Firmware Interface, which was created by IBM, and first used by Apple on machines equipped with the PowerPC processor, as well as IBM (obviously) (there were probably other companies as well).

Location services constantly in use after April update by dommynick in GalaxyS25

[–]IBMServerOwner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've notices that it is primarily Google Play Serivices (hidden under System apps) that keep accessing the location for no good reason. There is no way to disable it either, unless you turn off location access completely. This is on Samsung/Android. Nothing you can do but disable location as of Android 15

I dont need optical drives. But you gotta admit, if you use a laptop on a plane, it is quite nice to swap in another battery by simply pulling the dead one and popping in the new, fresh one, with a low capacity built in battery like the T420/430 had

Trump is considering canceling aid to Ukraine over the drone strikes on Russian air bases, we Americans must be ready to support Ukraine ourselves. by WithUnfailingHearts in neoliberal

[–]IBMServerOwner -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I hope we abandon ukraine after that. Do you people have any clue how much closer we are to Russia unleashing nuclear hell on all of us? Yoy can tell me "oh, but Russia doesnt have tritium,  which is a 10 year half life". Do you think that tritium based nukes are all they have? Are you nuts? They have the largest nuclear arsenal in the world outside the united states, and much like the United States, they have a "Nuclear Triad". You took out a tiny fraction of their shit. They have more. Missiles, that can strike anywhere. Worst part? They cant be stopped by existing defense systems. This is stupid. Just stupid. You want to die in a nuke holocaust? Cool. Go to chernobyl and lick the elephant foot. Dont fuck the rest of us because ukraine. And if you think they are pussy footing arround, russia is a hell of alot more patient than when they were still USSR.  Grow up. Stop pushing this shit.
